Old VHS artwork for movies was amazing.

The memories..

Going to this small rental shop in the '80 was always awesome. All those great mysterious covers; I couldnt read english at the time and most of the movies were in english, so I used the pictures in the back to try to find out what the movie was about. It felt almost taboo to do this, sometimes the pics were gory, scary, had naked women, etc etc. My mom would always refuse to rent for me stuff like ROTOR and whatsnot and I would end up with a NES rental instead, haha!

The covers were legit scary as a kid and very originals.

There's this movie I've always tried to find, the pictures were mind shattering as a kid -- it had some sort of demon-ish theme on the front cover and in the back, it showed pictures of the guy that seemed like he was morphing into some sort of monster, like had various stuff coming out of his stomach in one pic, in the other, he looking at his hand that was turning into a claw. In another picture, his skin was all fucked up. All I know is that it had a deep impact on me as a kid! And no, it's not The Fly. Every picture seemed to be located in some sort of bedroom or a run down apartment.

Huh. Weird. Here blank tapes came in cardboard but commercial releases would always be in the hard plastic boxes.
Nah dude, cardboard slipcases were all over the UK. My parents used to own a video shop (sale and rental) and almost all the budget and kids titles were slipcases.

Side note: people would get so mad over the 50p rewind fee.

I mostly enjoy the sports ones. I remember going to hollywood video and just picking up random wrestling/ufc videos because of the awesome covers.

Is it just me or do both sides of the covers in the OP generally look good? It took me a minute to figure out which side was the old supposedly awesome ones compared to the new ones. They both look nice, the old ones are just more busy.

Old movie posters were hand draw. Buy this amazing book:

In the intro they talk how stupid marketing people ruin recent movie posters.

Hardware - also known as MARK 13 - is one damn AMAZING SF MOVIE.

And it has Lemmy Killmister in the side-role.

One of my favorite "movies noone watched".

Absolute recommendation.

Yeah, loved his cameo as the taxi driver: after I got over the initial WTFFF! thanks to bandwagon-bullshit-middle-finger-marketing: Terminator my arse }:( I think that misrepresentation probably did the film harm initially.

Hardware is a much more humble and evocative film; more honest, dark and doesn't attempt any happyclappy bollocks. Lemmy's scene did help set the tone and anchor humanity in that particuar post-apocalyptic future. Although, I wasn't surprised to see him there: Lemmy and cockroaches, maaan :)

I recommend the doc Lemmy by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski, if you haven't seen it.

I was pleasantly surprised that the writer referenced a 2000AD story as major influence--that comic is a future goldmine for sci-fi, imho.
Y'know, since screenwriters and original concepts actually require money >;p
C'mon, Halo Jones movie :'(

My favourites:

Awesome.

I really like the biomechanical vibe; much more interesting than the movie prop.

i hated going with my uncle to rent movies because he would only rent movies with eye catching covers. most of the time it was some shitty horror movie.

There was this cover of a video with a monkey holding a razor blade in front of a "haunted house" sort of thing, it wasn't Monkey Shines looking at all the google pics even though the description of the movie sounds like it definitely is.

Sounds like The Incredible Melting Man, Screamers, or The Stuff.

This seems like a good resource for this thread...
