Old VHS artwork for movies was amazing.

One of my favourites

And this one:

(it's not a photo)

When I was kid and we rented VHS tapes it was pretty much the box art that sold us on whatever we rented.

Oh man, I didn't know there were even more replies to this thread, haha.

What was that horror film release just a few years ago that was a big throwback to things like Halloween and they actually released an old school looking VHS version as well? It's on the tip of my tongue but I just can't think of it right now.

EDIT:

And V/H/S isn't the one I'm thinking of...

Anyone else here have great memories of walking through the old movie stores back in the days of VHS and just enjoying the artwork? More specifically the artwork on the horror and sci-fi titles.

Abso fucking lutely.

Some cherished childhood memories.

This thread makes me want to see some animated piece using the artstyle of the <90's faithfully throughout. I remember seeing all these cool covers and posters only to be greeted by something completely different when I was a kid.

Yes yes yes.

Also Atari game boxes, and Konami NES boxes.

That beautiful 70s Frazetta style artwork, made everything look so classic and romantic.

Now everything looks like a 'My first photoshop collage', even when the original art already exists!

I guess it must appeal to the lowest common denominator mouth breathers.

Little Mermaid VHS IMG

Love it.
Is this a joke counter-example? Terrible art that looks worse than a screenshot would.

i hated going with my uncle to rent movies because he would only rent movies with eye catching covers. most of the time it was some shitty horror movie.

I loved the novelty covers, like the 3D bobbly ones like Chopping Mall and the hologram ones that changed depending on what angle you looked at them like Death before Dishonor.

Saw this around, and im holding to send on my daily funny pic mail i send my family everyday - but on halloween

Never knew about this movie

I love the poster for Nightmare 2 and want a poster of it on my wall. Is it possible to get it like this, with no text?

Its funny how (at least for part 1 and 2) the posters get the freddy glove all wrong.

Well, its not that funny when you think that part 2 got the franchise all wrong....

I'm enjoying this thread.

It kind of reminds me when we had LP's and they went to CD's. The artwork really suffered. The LP's had a lovely large canvas to work on.

I love old 1960's -80's hand painted artwork in movie posters and VHS cassettes:

Some great work from the classic Mad Magazine artist: Jack Davis:

Brings up so many memories of being in the horror section of video rental stores.

And sadly, will never again come around.

Sometimes they get it right. The Gauntlet Blu-ray uses the Frank Frazetta cover art.

Yeah, but sadly that's because the studios probably just wanted to shovel it out there to make a few extra cents. They probably didn't even want to shell out money for someone to do a shitty photoshop.

Which is a WIN for us, but I wonder if it shows how arrogant the studios are. :p

I've come to the conclusion it's because they were mostly hand drawn artwork. Fantastic.

This thread is really taking me back, love it. Reminds me of the days of walking into a Blockbuster and picking out random movies based partly on their artwork on the box.

Yep.
Was it the same artist for most movies?
Because most hand drawn movie posters from the 80´s kinda look alike (and they´re all great)

Dont understand why no movie brings it back. Dosent even need to be a throwback of the 80´s movie.... i mean, Days of Future Past could use a hand drawn 80´s poster better than the mess that is the regular poster

Also reminds me of the story when DVD's first came out my mate lent his upstairs elderly neighbour a couple of DVD's to try out.
She returned them a couple of days latter but apologised because she forgot to rewind the second DVD.

Yep we won't see a time like this again. My dad would tell me and my brothers he was going to get out some videos and we'd tag along.

The horror section used to scare me as they'd have the massive cutouts for certain films.
I remember the Maniac Cop used to put the shits up me when I saw it standing in the horror section.

It really wasn't "The Terminator for the nineties," but was a fun, quirky b-movie.

Hardware - also known as MARK 13 - is one damn AMAZING SF MOVIE.

And it has Lemmy Killmister in the side-role.

One of my favorite "movies noone watched".

Absolute recommendation.

Its way cheaper and takes less time to get an intern to throw in some publicity stills on a blank canvas with some set background in photoshop and "save as". Than hiring a real artist to actually paint the picture.

Saw this again on Netflix the other day. Awesome.
