Onechanbara Z2: Chaos coming west this summer

It's not happening next week if XSEED didn't share a release date by now. XSEED will share a release date at least a month before the release, end of July is a lot more likely than next week.

Since every store had June 30th I though that was the official date. It's not like everyone accidentally made up the same release date, it has to come from somewhere.

I guess it's a sneaky way of not having to say that something is delayed.

Slightly disappointed, every import I pre-order gets "delayed" :(

That's not how XSEED works. Unless they've specifically mentioned a date, they're all placeholders, even if they're all using the same date. It's not like Aksys and Atlus where their placeholders are usually the release date.

We do try for that, but something always comes up. We give a conservative placeholder date, with every intention of meeting it... but then we fail master, or we have production issues, or we find a crash bug at the last minute, and we're forced to redo our schedule accordingly, pushing out the placeholder date a little farther.

That's why we always warn people never to trust our placeholder dates -- because despite our best efforts, Murphy always intervenes and makes things take longer than expected.

...The upside is, once we actually announce a date officially, we stick to it.

That Banana costume is quite a creative way to place a Banana in.........
Creative is a good choice of words. Mentioned this game and it's strawberry and banana trailer to a married Co-worker who ended up watching it; despite me trying to assure him the game play more than measures up, the "I can't" was so profound, he became the German philosopher.

Seems like the new placeholder date is 7/21, at least according to Amazon and Best Buy. Pretty pissed about that since I haven't been keeping up with the release date changes and thought I would be able to play it this week during my week alone...ugh.

No thanks. I like my videogame boobies to come with subtlety and plausible deniability.

Then you should probably avoid the Senran Kagura games, but feel free to play Onechanbara. Despite the Japanese marketing, boobs are not the focus of this game in any way. It's all about badass women kicking zombie ass. The fact that they're wearing skimpy outfits (or two out of four of them are, anyway) is never the focus -- it's just part of their characters. Basically, Kagura and Aya are sexy and they know it, and they have no qualms about showing it off.

Looking forward to picking this up (have it pre-ordered), I enjoyed Onechanbara on X360 and Wii and never thought we'd get another entry localized so thanks again to the folks at XSEED.

I'd like it if someone could help me out. I'm very interested in picking up another crazy-and-over-the-top action game, but one with nuanced, complex combat mechanics that give the player a lot of room to learn and get better. I can thank DMC4: SE for that. :p

Basically, I'm wondering if Oneechanbara Z2: Chaos is what I'm looking for. I don't expect the game to be as deep as a DMC game, but I would still like to know more about the combat mechanics and such. For that matter, I have a few questions:

1) What mechanics and dangers make the combat system most compelling for you?

2) Is it possible to complete levels and/or kill bosses without getting hit?

3) What are the hardest difficulty modes like? Are they comparable to the likes of Dante Must Die or God Hand's Hard Mode, in that they are unforgiving but still fair?

4) Is there an invincible dodge?

If anyone could answer, I'd appreciate it. I'm already intrigued at the $39.99 price tag, but the answers I get here may end up sealing the deal. =D

1) I love the combat system with the cool combos and the changing of your character and weapon mid combo. It allows for some pretty intresting cancels and if you time your cool combo right you can switch at the end of one and your other character does their finisher on to the next two. If you do it right you can stun bosses, launch enemies and get the rest of your combo out and then you can start again.

2) Very possible to avoid getting hit while doing a boss and level, you just need to know your movement and tool kit.

3) Very hard is not quite up their with DMD or Master Ninja mode but it's close to the Very Hard mode in other games, if you don't watch what you are doing you can die really quick.

4)There are 2 dodges one is just a dash that you can use to get out of dodge then there is a side roll/dash and does have an invulnerability window that if you time it properly you can get a really good counter attack.

Hopefully this is helpful.

1)Gameplay is easy to pick up and play but it has enough moves to learn.
2)You can do that.
3)Not that hard but its more fun to play on harder difficulty since normal is rather easy
4)Don't remember since it has been a long time since I played Onechanbara

1) The dangers of the system involve letting too much blood on your sword and naturally taking damage from being too reckless in cutting down enemies. At some points it turns into a musou-ish game with cutting up enemies, but enemies that run towards you can attack fast enough to catch people off guard. Making sure that you safely shake blood off your weapon while keeping a combo going and not getting hit or losing too much life during Blood Rage is important.

I'd say the most compelling part of the combat is switching weapons and styles while slashing enemies into pieces. You can also switch characters while comboing too, and the combo system rewards you for attacking up to a certain point and switching in a character. It also has OTGs, which are awesome in any action game.

2) Absolutely. However some bosses are a bit stupid in that the camera doesn't give you the best view, or the bosses have too much health that requires you to level up more or rely on Power Gems / Bracelets. But with normal practice a no-hit run should be pretty simple for a action game guru. It's kind of a shame because the original game on Wii/360 had more humanoid bosses which were more fun to fight IMO. One thing that annoys me about the enemies in this game is that they don't give off a tell-tale *flash* when they attack which is standard in pretty much any action game, but the attacks are usually slow enough or have a big enough tell to dodge on reaction.

3) The game has four difficulty levels, but the harder ones are locked behind completing the previous difficulty, so that's kind of lame. Though I haven't played the hardest difficulty in Z2, I know that you gain no extra experience in the older games and automatically enter Blood Rage on picking up any red orb, so you have to really rely on statues to clear away Blood Rage so that you don't lose too much life. It's not as hard as DMD, but it is a new way to play that challenges you to hold onto your health in a different way.

4) There is an invincible roll/dodge. Works just like Bayonetta!

I paid good money for this Dynex!
This looks like one of those B-action games from the PS2 era that I miss so much these days... but with more boobs.

I want to believe this is awesome.

80 pages of Onechanbara lore, plus that guilty pleasure-filled soundtrack.

Man, I'd totally go for physical over digital (a first on PS4 for me) if it wouldn't cost me 5x more...

ShinMaruku, Bayonetta, Nyoro SF, thank you so much for your responses. If you guys ever stream the game, I'll see if I can catch, but suffice it to say, I think I'll be looking forward to July 21st.

In Japan you could buy the dlc.

That would be awesome!

I'll update the thread when I get to it.

I can possibly go pick this up today, but I'm really on the fence, I don't want to get all action game'd out after playing DMC4 and importing Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi in two weeks...

Well the games are different enough that you won't get burnte out on the gameplay. However when you really get into the groove you can really feel bad ass. Also this game has the best action game training mode EVER.

The European release has always been August, NIS America are releasing Lost Dimension on the same day. Doesn't come with any DLC, or an artbook or CD and is about the same price. I'm gonna import the US version.

Excited for tomorrow. Gamestop still hasn't charged me yet though. Hoping it gets here on the 21st since I paid for the extra shipping.

No OT? Anyone with review/early/Japanese copies have any issues in the castle area (chapter 11 I think?) big room with 4 doors (and one non-functional one), I got locked in by the "kill all enemies" gate, cleared all 4 rooms, re-checked each like 4 times, couldn't progress. Known bug, am I missing something or what? Was rather enjoying the combat until then.

It's out already? Anyone got a mini review they can post?

It releases today. I was going to do a video review/let's play after beating the game.

My impressions through chapter 10:

The story, graphics and english voice acting are quite bad. Basically what you would expect. I don't normally hate dubs but they're very unenthusiastic at times--most of the combat quotes are okay though which is why I've been too lazy to switch to japanese.
The boss monster and player character graphics are an exception, they're fine, not amazing but fine.
I can't say the music is bad but it's not entirely to my taste. Fits the absurdity of it all well enough I guess.
Not nearly as humorous as I expected, I was hoping for something closer to say Senran Kagura.

Most importantly, the actual gameplay is pretty fun character-actiony stuff. Upgrades, multiple weapons, combos, scoring system, pretty much all you'd expect out of a character action game. It's no Bayonetta but when the game gives you a bunch of enemies or a well designed boss (a couple were annoying) it's a lot of fun and you can just let the other stuff slide.

Definitely not a game to buy for any reason but the gameplay (even the fanservice is lacking IMO), and it's not going to stand up against your Bayonettas or DMCs but it's a pretty accessible combat system with lots of fun flair as you learn to play right.

Amount of content seems decent. I've put several hours in and seem to be a fair bit from beating the game, there's a ton of "mission mode" stuff too, higher difficulties. Some of the stages are kind of stupidly designed though, like the castle I got stuck in (even if it's not a bug, going in and out of 4 rooms with loading times to clean a monster closet is just stupid) and the numerous times you'll be chasing down That One Last Enemy to lower the "kill all enemies to advance" gate, but for the most time it's some decent dumb fun that doesn't get in your way too much.
