Hope they keep making these and bringing them to the US, I haven't had this much plain fun in a game in a long time, budget title or not it's just awesome!

Yeah, I wish we didn't have to do that, but we were told in no uncertain terms that the cover was showing too much cleavage for the game to be stocked on store shelves. Welcome to puritanical America, I guess!

At least it was just the cover art, though. And we included a reversible cover to help make up for that. ;)

-Tom

Guess it's a video game restriction, imagine if Sports Illustrated had to do that. XD

Yeah, it is. Basically a holdover of the belief that "video games are for kids," so one can't display anything on a store shelf that's too racy for wee little eyes!

Just preordered, never played a game of this series but i've always been curious about it. The PAL version that's coming in august has the reversible cover too?

Sadly I don't think i'll be buying any of the DLC for this as fast as I'm going through this game I'll have plowed my way to the Platinum trophy in no time.

Yeah, I'm always surprised finished DLC doesn't go on sale sooner. I'm way more likely to grab it if it's there while I'm still playing the game, especially if it's cosmetic. If I've moved on, DLC costumes won't bring me back. But I don't play games super fast these days, and I still have plenty of Onechanbara action left. Trying to decide if I should finish the Hard missions, start the Hard campaign with Japanese language, or grind out the no damage stuff so I can unlock those other costumes.

There's DLC? This is why I prefer how Idea Factory International does DLC--just throw it all out there day 1 if it's already finished for Japan. I almost never come back to games for DLC but I'll but it if I want it when I'm playing.

Personally, I'd recommend finishing the story mode in all difficulties first. The ring you get when you finish Berserk difficulty makes everything else so much easier, even the no boss damage stuff. You get new costumes too.

The rings starts you already transformed and you don't lose health. With a couple of punches from Saki every boss goes down in no time. And you will get V's all over the place with Aya's third Ecstasy combo (you automatically buid Ecstasy meter when transformed).

I'm glad to finally see a company representative is just as annoyed as I am about the ESRB's fear of breasts. :p

So change of opinion. I think Saaya is by far the most broken in the game. Beserk Ring+Vampiric Ring +Technique Ring = Godlike with Saaya. The vampiric ring heals per hit and her chainsaw hits on one swing an incredible amount of times. You'll just be literally gaining health faster than you can lose it even with enemies just pounding on you with the exception of the few really dangerous bosses.

Looks like the first batch is planned for next week. We'll be releasing it bit by bit every two weeks.

-Tom

I'm sure you do it that way for a reason, but if you can share, I'd love to hear an elaboration on the drip-feeding strategy.

As a consumer, my interest in DLC is highest when I'm actively playing the game. I understand slow DLC releases for multiplayer focused titles to re-energize the player base (assuming for the sake of argument that said DLC could have all been sold day 1); but why not follow the Netflix strategy with a single player game like Onechanbara, which almost certainly won't get a sales spike six weeks from now when a new hairstyle drops, and let players binge?

It's kind of funny as a consumer: we have season passes for some games, often paying for DLC in full before the game is even released for the promise of content yet to be created. But when the content is all finished up (and on sale in other territories) it's inevitably drip-fed to us over an extended period of time. Not just by you guys, obviously this is the done thing across the board. It's hard to understand. I'd have gladly bought the whole lot on day 1 if there was a slightly discounted bundle on sale in addition to the individual items. Now I'll grab what I want a la carte if the bits I'd like release while I'm still playing the game, and unfortunately anything else will be ignored once I'm on to the next thing.

Is it done this way with the hope of preventing trade-ins? It seems unlikely that the buyers who would instantly resell the game would be the types to buy DLC for it in the first place, let alone hang on to it to wait for cosmetic DLC to drop.

Totally understand if you can't comment on this for nebulous industry reasons, but any light you can shine on the strategy will make me less frustrated by my inability to buy new costumes!

Is difficulty all that relevant in this game? Hard still seems pretty easy, wondering if the next two difficulties will be annoying though. Not sure I have it in me to platinum with the no damage and all v rank stuff

Very hard will make some bosses a pain in the ass. The last few bosses will def cause some trouble. But dodging is key and you should use the tag cancel combos they have I frames and huge hit boxes.

So fun tip with Aya that will let you exploit the shit out of how the scoring in this game works leading to easy easy V ranks.

Once you get her fully upgraded knives lock onto an enemy then press and hold circle to bring up the knives DON'T let go of circle and then dodge this cancels the knives and makes them fire and then instantly resets them without having to re-press circle if you time you dodges just right you'll have a rapid stream of daggers allowing you to get 1000+ combos easily.

You can also do somehting similar with Kagura's sub weapon where when fully maxed out and charged you can send out multiple of them and will also rack up those hits as well. Has better hitstop so for the tankier things, you can blow them up.

Fairly close to my Plat just need to grind out these stupid no damage boss runs which is THE most tedious annoying thing.

Fun tip: Kagura's sub weapon can be charged while doing other attacks! Sort of like Zero's buster/sword in the Mega Man Zero games or UMVC3. Wish I noticed that earlier, her "mash circle" attacks with it are pretty fun.

box quote

You are getting her down. Saki can also cancel her attacks to charge her counters too.

There are a few system buried in the game.

I'm not so sure some of this stuff are actual systems rather than just being able to exploit the shit out of how the game works.

In Japanese games you exploiting the shit out of the game becomes a system. The charging mechanic and Saki's mid combo cancels are systems though.

I still don't get how Saki's counters work, I could only ever get one to connect, unless enemies have to actually keep attacking for the circle "combo" to work

It's totally intentional, otherwise they'd just disable the charging when you dash-cancel the stand-still charge for Kagura.

Saki's counters are just frames. You have to land it as they hit her. Zombies are just so clumsy that they miss from time to time.

Just got this from Gamefly. Really enjoying it. Probably just gonna beat it on normal and send it back as these games are just fun for the ride but beating it repeatedly just isn't my thing.

Some bosses are mega damage sponges, though.

Any advice for V-Ranking a few of the earlier medium missions? I have all of them V-Ranked besides the first two (and I think the 5th or 6th, it's the one in China before "defeat 6 ogres")

The ones with less enemies/no bosses seem a lot harder to get big scores with...

I'm not sure if I'll have the patience for the game on higher difficulties but I kind of want to go for the platinum haha. Game is super fun. The style (and a few ripped moves) of DMC mixed with the speed, slicing, gore, and ninpo from Ninja Gaiden.

It's not a particularly hard game but it's super chaotic which I really enjoy in a game. Gives you a similar satisfaction as destroying a screen full of sprites in a shmup, dropping the framerate hard and spraying blood instead of coins.

Touchpad cinematic moves are actually done pretty well too, obviously the lack of budget compared to other titles is on full display and the arrow prompt is pretty hideous, but it's satisfying and the moves themselves are pretty fun

I've actually come around to most of the bosses too now that I have a better grasp on tag mechanics and whatnot, but the Japan one is still just a failure and totally unfun to fight.

The first medium mission is easy to V Rank. USe Kagura's weakest Trick Dagger with no buffing rings, just mash normal attacks to get it dirty, it should get over 50% stain before you win. Then just wail on invincible enemies for free points until satisfied.

Japan boss is a travesty. The legs are tedious crap and I can't believe even a game with this low of budget left them in

Not specifically talking about that. There are other ways to exploit the shit out of how the game handles things like scoring, damage ect..... If someone was bored enough it would be a trival thing to just grind out points and get top spot on all the leaderboards.

I'm talking stuff like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXhTWt0BLto

Yeah, this game is a lot of fun.

Bwahahaha that's great. I played around a bit but I never got this adventurous

Actually that reminds me a lot of little big planet somehow

Oh yeah, the scoring system is totally abusable. For instance any boss can be farmed for infinite score due to requiring a QTE finisher. Just keep comboing them through the animation and so on.

Yup. And even if you don't have a boss you can do that Aya dagger thing that I posted and get 1000+ combos in like 30 seconds.

What's the timing/trick to that anyway?

Its sort of tricky you have to feel out the rhythm to it. You basically want to dodge to make the first set fly out while still holding the circle then dodge again just as the next set are readying. The daggers sort of let off a white "flash" when they are ready to fire.

Jump into practice and try it out until you get a feel for it.

Liking the game a lot so far. I only played the first one on the 360 and it was pretty awful so I'm glad I took the gamble and it turned out to be a lot better. I just wish that you got graded on something besides your combo because I like Saki but she's the Lord of C because she kills everything in like 2 hits and can't get super high combos before running out of enemies, it also makes Kagura insanely good since she can just sweep entire rooms with the trick blade and get like 40 hits per button press.

I'm not the one to ask -- far as I know, it's just the way this sort of thing is done! I think it has something to do with keeping the game in the news and on the PSN front page a little longer, maybe? I dunno.

Either way, I passed your feedback along to the rest of the company at yesterday's game meeting, as you brought up some good points. I suggested we re-evaluate this DLC release strategy for future titles, and it sounded like we probably will. Not saying we definitely won't release DLC for other games like this, but we'll at least do a bit more due diligence in questioning the approach before simply settling on it.

I can see that. Sort of getting free advertising of sorts by keeping it in the updates for weeks after it releases. I think it might be a neat idea in cases like this where the JP DLC is already made after localization to offer sort of a Digital "All-in-one" pack that allows you to buy the game + all the DLC in one package ( obviously priced appropriately to the value of the DLC) then drip feed out the individual items out over the next few weeks if someone doesn't want the entire DLC catalog.

Seems like a win/win to me. You give people the chance to get everything up front for those who want it and still get prime storefront exposure for weeks after. If you had something like that when Estival Versus comes out I'd be sure to nab it. :)
