Beat the game. Seems like plenty of more stuff to go back for. Working my way through missions now. Mission 8 on Normal is kicking my ass.

The game arrived in the mail today! Ordered from Best Buy with GCU, so just had to pay normal price for the "Banana Split Edition". Pretty excited to play, but will have to wait until tomorrow.

The Missions are so, so good. I'm using way more Ecstasy combos than I did during the main game.

Also, there are far more weapons to buy than I thought! I believe that as well as being more powerful and staining less easily, they also make Cool combos easier. No idea if I'm right, but I seem to be busting them out without trying, and I don't have the Cool Combo ring. Now I can work on my timing for the Tag Finishers.

And since "お姉ちゃん", or "Onee-chan" is part of a part of speech that we don't really even have (it's sort of an honorific, although I'm not sure if it applies when it's clustered in such a way,) even the literal translation of "little sister" doesn't really work.

Plus "Sword-Fighting Little Sister" would probably raise more eyebrows than what they ended up putting on the box. A Japanese name keeps the series under the radar without too many people getting squicked by there being a game about half-naked girls slicing zombies up with swords.

Actually, "onee-chan" is BIG sister, not little sister. Little sister is "imouto" or "imouto-chan."

So it would be a wee bit less squicky in that sense, at least. ;)

And "chan" isn't really honorific, it's... friendly and personal. It's a name ending you use to address someone who's younger than you, someone you think is cute, or (if you're a girl) a BFF or actual sister (which is, I think, what they were going for).

"chan" is rarely used on men, and is rarely said by men except to their own family members or, like, MAYBE their girlfriends. If they have a really lovey-dovey relationship.

...The More You Know! ;)

Oniisan or nisan would be for older brother from a younger sister.
Oneechanbara just is a play on words for big sister sword epic.

Works doubly so for Aya and Kagura both of them being big sisters. :p

I read Kagura's profile in the Gallery. She dresses the way she does to mock Aya. Why Aya dresses the way she does remains a mystery to me...

Deepest Lore.

This game is a lot of fun!

It reminds me of earth defense force in that it's very simple but it keeps you engaged and you want to keep playing because its fun to fight hordes of enemies at once with outrageous attacks and blood effects.

Feels like an arcade game in many ways.

If you're having trouble, farm mission 7 (kill 6 Ogres).

Leave 1 or 2 ogres alive and kill the rest of the enemies. With a little practice, you can get 20/25k every 5 minutes.

Upgrade your weapons and become unstoppable.

Some people use the "kun" suffix/attachment similarly to "chan" and both are interchangeable for most but not all situations. Really depends on the context of the people involved in the exchange.

"kun" has a similar feel to it, but it's a bit more masculine -- you generally use it only to refer to young boys, or to tomboyish girls. You can almost think of "chan" and "kun" as the female and male equivalents of one another, though a Japanese woman will typically be happier to be called "chan" than a Japanese man will be to be called "kun," since girlish cuteness is considered a desirable trait for Japanese women but... not so much boyish cuteness for Japanese men.

Foreign culture gender roles, and the way language was built around them, can be a rather interesting subject!

"kun" doesn't necessarily apply to "tomboyish" girls. There are instances in both anime and manga where someone older referred to a girl with "kun". It just seems that "kun" is a bit more neutral on the relationship scale of things when it is used.

It might also be a holdover of the kanji's original reading of "-kimi" (originally from "no kimi") which would explain why it is occasionally used even between female family members.

Not necessarily, no, but it's still generally thought of as a slightly more masculine name ending, and seems to be used a bit less frequently with girls than with boys. Not all girls referred to as -kun are tomboyish, but if you have a tomboyish girl in an anime or game, chances are she's referred to as -kun.

Do weapon upgrades matter? I figured they were purely for aesthetics?

Just found out that Aya has Virgil's Summon Swords. This game!

Also, PSA, Saaya's Dragon Punch is the best move to do with toast in a character's mouth.

anyone looking for the physical copy, i put mine in the BST thread. I finished the game, and I think (well mostly know) that i won't go back to the game. Check it out if interested or PM me.

Thought I would help out a gaffer who wants a physical copy the same price of a digital copy.

Aya's last extacy art is summoning swords like Vergils. She also can chuck them as well. The game has hidden shit. I was trying to show ya in party chat. :p

I'm not even talking about an Ecstasy move - haven't yet bought any of those; been focusing on rings and weapons. Might be a skill you need to buy. But just hold down the circle button. Instead of throwing her knives out rapidly, she summons a vast glowing flock of them that appear in formation around her, then you fire them all at once.

That is the key to quick V rank. You can easily hit 1000 hits.

Do you know what DLC the Japanese release got? I'm assuming the costumes that are labelled DLC in the artbook - was there anything else?

Check out for yourself. I would recommend you open in an incognito browser window in chrome otherwise it'll prob just redirect you to the english store instead of the JP one. https://store.playstation.com/#!/ja-jp/%e3%82%b2%e3%83%bc%e3%83%a0/%e3%81%8a%e5%a7%89%e3%83%81%e3%83%a3%e3%83%b3%e3%83%90%e3%83%a9z2-%ef%bd%9e%e3%82%ab%e3%82%aa%e3%82%b9%ef%bd%9e/cid=JP0367-CUSA00889_00-ANEZ2GAME0000000%3AADD-ONS?EMCID=jGMstrosusume_cpn_42096150402SRWZ3

I'm really on the fence with this game. I'll assume it's at least as good as The Oneechanpon: The Oneechan 2 Special Edition for the PS2? To date it's the only one worth a damn in my opinion, but it sounds like this newish version is as good or better.

I just don't know what to do, wait for the retail banana edition price to drop, or just get the downloadable edition now (I've got around $20 on my account). I'm just worried the new retail versions might get hard to come by. Not that I really need the physical extras but for $10 more why not? Then I'm also wondering if I should do the best buy gamers club thing, but I really don't buy new games that often.

Damn. some of those outfits are nice
lewd :)

Perhaps I should just get the digital version and use the money I save to get DLC later on, assuming they release some stuff I might like.

Nice! Thanks for the tip - there's that sweet ninja outfit. Am I seeing accesories or weapons? Probably a mixture of both. The nunchuks look like accessories, but it'd be sweet if they were a new weapon.

I am NOT having an easy time getting this game. It arrived at my PO Box this morning and I just went there after work to pick it up and... I only got a slip saying that it was "too large for my box." Meaning it is being kept in the office for pickup. We have package boxes at my PO Box that they put a key in our normal boxes for, they're large.

Post Office is closed until Monday, so no game till then. Has anyone bought stuff from BestBuy.com before? I realize this game is larger as it comes in a box due to the soundtrack and artbook, but there is no way it wouldn't have fit in a PO Box that you could fit two (possibly three) fully packaged Xbox Ones in.

Is BestBuy.com one of those places that put a small product in a giant box and then surround it with air packaging?

It's damn awesome, been playing the shit out of it since getting it, it's mega fun the controls is top notch. Graphically it's not amazing but it's sharp and the characters look great and yes plenty of nice outfits. I'd get the retail release the art book that comes with it is thick and fantastic, and the album supposedly has all the music from all the previous games too.

Just a bit of correction on that: the included soundtrack CD actually only has music from Onechanbara Z: Kagura and Onechanbara Z2: Chaos, and not *all* of either soundtrack -- just most of both. We actually had to cherry-pick tracks to include on the disc, since the two soundtracks combined were well over 80 minutes, but we only left out... I think 5 tracks total? (Plus the karaoke versions of Ichiban wa Me and Two Deadly Girls.) And they were all tracks that we voted on within the office -- pretty unanimously, in fact -- as being the least standout in the whole set.

Basically, we tried to give you guys as much bang for your buck as possible, because we hate wasting space on CDs -- since the format can hold up to 80 minutes, we like to try to get as close to that as possible whenever we have the option of doing so.

How would you guys say the "feel" of this game is?

By that I mean, "warriors-style" games seem to play really differently depending on how much weight both your attacks and the enemies themselves are conveyed with. Love Hyrule Warriors as there was just enough weight to it all but couldn't get into Warriors Orochi 3 as everything felt to light and paper thin.

Hope that makes sense.

I know exactly what you're talking about. The sensation of weight and force behind attacks in Onechanbara is fantastic. One of the best things about the game. Every character and every one of their weapons feels totally unique, and all are incredibly satisfying and fun. All of them really pop, but in different ways to reflect the user and fighting style. Kagura's and Saki's swords feel more 'slashy', while Aya's swords lend themselves to a lot of crunch as they burst through enemies. Saaya's fists have an awesome weight and speed, heavier than Saki's, which are faster. There's none of that sense of weightlessness that makes everything feel like it's made of cardboard.

Also, never tried Hyrule Warriors, but this doesn't feel like any musou game I've played. If I had to compare the sensation of playing to anything, it would be Ninja Gaiden 2, or maybe a sped up Onimusha 3; but the mechanics are more Devil May Cry with a sprinkling of Bayonetta. The enemies are fairly brainless (especially compared to the games from which it takes inspiration) - think Dead Rising - but some of them have patterns you have to watch for, then there are larger monsters; formation attacks...There's surprisingly decent enemy variety, even if they're pretty simple. It's not like wading through a field of human grass like a Samurai/Dynasty Warriors or Sengoku Basara game.

This is one of those games that would benefit so much from a demo.

Heads up the super boss rush enemy spam thing near the end of the game is a great place to farm the "knock 500 enemies out of bounds" thing. Just chase attack directly into enemies and you'll launch them, if they hit the walls they'll fall out.

Also, WTF, this thing feels like punishment for not knowing how to pull off the cool combo + weapon refresh thing. Though knocking all the trash mobs out of bound while grinding saves a ton of durability. Any tips on how to do that? Sounds like only certain combos can do that?

Edit: oh god, just before the final battle I see the loading screen tip about L1 to refresh your weapon. oh

Sir TapTap

Wow dodge rolls keep the combo timer from expiring.

You played the entire thing without using refresh? Haha, that must've been frustrating.

Yeah, I figured it was a gimmick to encourage switching characters, though some weapons (chainsaw) got inappropriately damaged quickly...this makes much more sense.

Yeah, I gave Saaya the "Blood Repelent Ring" to slow down the blood on the chainsaw. Though, I don't use Saaya at all at this point. She feels like the weakest character of the game for me.

Anyways, finished my "Violent" playthrough and got the Berserk Ring. It will be very useful for the final playthrough on "Berserk" for sure. Berserk Ring + Vampiric Ring = LOL

Just a PSA for everyone so they don't make the same mistake I did: Use your damn Chaos Gems. They increase your health permanently. I kept forgetting about my items and since you can store only 9 of them, all the extra gems that dropped were wasted.

Saaya and Saki are the worst characters IMO, chainsaw is soooo sloowww and the fists are just terrible in most situations compared to the wide area slashes of Aya and Kagura.

Also I remember finding it bad, but starting again on Hard reminded me just how terrible the game starts off. Especially the Saaya/Saki section. Takes FOREVER, very few enemies, extremely spread apart, the exact opposite of what makes the game fun. I don't know what they were thinking. I imagine a lot of people are going to quit/trade in after less than an hour that would have enjoyed it after say chapter 4. Just remove the entire section of the game before the "select a stage" thing and the game is better IMO. Alternately, tighten up the barrier walls in the "sea of blood" area and like quadruple the number of enemies, but leave them braindead. Only marginally harder, 10x more fun.

Also what is with Saaya's "punch the ground" super? The rocket fist one is largely the same but homes and does way more damage.

I dunno I like Saaya. Her chainsaw is slow but its great for crowd control and really easy to get blood for transformations. There's no contest that Kagura is entirely OP. But I like her lil' sis just fine.

I think you are using those two wrong. They are not Kagura, no Kagura is the Dante/Vergil of this game far too much mechanics, so much tools fastest and hardest hitting character in the game, but when you get down cool combos and the tag cancels, the speed of the other two's attacks mean nothing, you nail the cancel they come out quicker and let a rip. Also use Saya's sub weapon as well as the chainsaw and the fists. The Fists are very good on certain enemies, don't discount them. As for Saki, unless you are parrying mid combo you don't see the complete nuttiness of that girl as well as her finishers, they are fast and great for crowd clearing and dismemberment. Also her Ecstasy arts are some of the best in the game for damage.

I dunno I like Saaya. Her chainsaw is slow but its great for crowd control and really easy to get blood for transformations. There's no contest that Kagura is entirely OP. But I like her lil' sis just fine.
You have it right you use her as crowd control. The Chainsaw if for being grops and gathering up blood, you use it and the fists in combinations. There is a mission in the game where only fists do damage I will stream that later today to show how nutter those two girls are.

But yeah Kagura is nuts but is; very obvious why, she's the older of the princesses therefore the most powerful since she took a better balance of her mother and her father than Saya did.

I still haven't found how to actually do the tag in supercombo whatever things. It says the timing is shown in practice but I didn't see it, unless they have to be all Cool combos and I missed one?

It's only during the cool finishers, which in turn only happen if you cool all hits in a combo. When the screen slows down you change characters and the next will come up and automatically do their finisher. You can link all 4 that way.

Tried in practice, I got the cool finisher, nothing happened on switch in. Oh well, wanted to show it off for the video but it looks like it'd be too hard for now.
