Oh, I did it but I was just expecting a flashier entrance from the switch-in. Oh well. And wow, I wasn't expecting the technique ring to be full-on "impossible to mess up" like that

I always find it best to use Kagura to start the cool combo since hers hit the most and gives you great space to get everybody else in.

So I'm oddly having an easier time on Hard with Mission mode than on Normal? I even posted a score that made it to 17th place for mission 4.

lol the game crashed in the middle of my Let's Play. Anyone else gotten crashes? Was doing a Devil Trigger during the two zombie girls boss fight. Never had one before. That's awkward.

Yep, twice. At the result screen at the end of story missions. Autosave kicked in a second before the crashes so I didn't lose any progress.

I actually lost basically a full chapter. Which is weird, I've died in that same boss fight and it returned me to the start of it. Oh well.

Normal and Hard playthroughs finished, I guess I'll do Violent next before I start doing the missions.

Saki + Ecstasy just mows through bosses, especially with that hokuto no ken finisher she has.

IMO do missions first for cosmetics, a little less boring that way. Plus a lot of missions are super easy

I need to take a little bit of a break anyways, let my brain actually process something other than mashing.

Also, shameless plug: JPS Review. I don't entirely agree with this author, since this was a title that I was personally looking forward to post-E3, but I figured getting more opinions on the game couldn't hurt.

Finished the Berserk difficulty. Captured the whole thing:

I'll probably try to go for the platinum. Farming no boss damage is going to be a pain due to the loading times but whatever, perfect time to listen to a podcast in the background.

The platinum seems annoying (possibly confirmed by the 0.01% earn rate, not sure if that includes Japanese players though), don't think I'll go for that but most of the trophies seem reasonable aside from the no damage and V rank ones. I doubt I'll get to Berserk difficulty either, probably just finish my hard run, finish Normal missions and move on. Missions range from fun to silly but quick, is there a character with especially good dash attacks? Those missions are insanely boring at least with how I'm doing it.

The "quests" are an interesting look at the game features I rarely use. I had to farm the aerial dodge and punch/kick damage because I almost never use them

No damage from a boss is easy when you fight a launchable boss. You launch them then stun lock them

Platinum Get!!!

That wasn't so bad. Probably my only annoyance was with a single mission on hard where I had to throw 30 enemies out of bounds without being hit. Had to restart a bunch of times.

Other than that it was pretty easy with Aya and her third Ecstasy combo.

Despite all the pause screen tips it's kind of easy to miss at least a feature or two. There's a lot going on and honestly most of it is unnecessary to just play the game except for hard mode, high scores or specific missions. Accessibility-wise it's a strength that it still works but it's awkward to find out "oh I could have done this the whole time"

Glad you guys like it. If this get proper iteration something on the level of DMC could come about.

This is why I wish critics would be more receptive to these small Japanese studios that have interactive games that very clearly improve each time. Senran Kagura, Neptunia and apparently this series (or just this one game? Haven't played the others) made huge strides and it's really weird to see that not at all rewarded or remarked on at a critical level. A lot of the series we know and love started with okay to bad games that few even remember (Street fighter 1, Mother 1, NES FF, especially 2, Metal Gear nonsolid)

It's crazy and great to see upstart devs improve so much, even if there happens to be some fanservice in there.

This is why I pay the critics no attention. Unlike most western studios these smaller Japanese studios have their budget and somehow some way always iterate on their games and always improve on their craft. Oneechanbara was budget UNTIL Oneechanbara Kagura where they started to really put their things together.

Senran Kagura is a great example how they are progressing with their games, I think the next two iterations will be where the game explode. They have the cast and the youma storyline if they progress to the girls outside of their schools they could have a story and premise that even the western critics could maybe engage better.

At least in SK's case it seems to be selling well enough to justify more games and more localizations, which is about the best I'd expect. I don't think game criticism is mature enough to accept that something might be both trashy fun and something more substantial. Hell going by people's reactions to Neptunia half of western reviewers can't even understand what parody is.

I think Bayonetta is about as far fringe was critics would tend to accept en-masse, and it has very high production values compared to anything like this and is a lot better at keeping the fanservice to things a western audience will appreciate/tolerate. Not saying this game is as good as Bayonetta, but if Bayo had the low budget and resulting graphics/script/etc this game does I doubt it'd rate quite as high. It's strength is it's fun at every level, even if you suck and just flail around it's nice and cinematic. Hell it's even got a difficulty mode for that.

The budgets for these games are modest enough that if they make them every 2 years the aggregate profit would be worth their times.
Remember Onechanbara is a movie series now too. And SK is a multimeida game property, both can easily reach it. It will just take time.

I'm not sure about the Manga but I doubt the anime/OVA will help SK's reputation as anything but fanservice lol. Merch has to be good for the bottom line though.

Didn't know they were making a Onechanbara movie. Is this the part where they make a terrible video game adaption of the movie of the video game a la street fighter?

The fanserivce and anime and merch plus the games will all add into enough to keep the games rolling. If it iterates to gold it will all be worth it. There are 2 Oneechanbara movies in Japan. I am waiting for the Kagura version. It's gonna be so good!

So I don't get Hard Mode Mission 9 "Maintain a 50 Hit combo while hunting a 100 enemies legs"

I picked Aya and started doing her sweeping sword chop but only got like 4 enemies legs. :(

Expected a stupid flashy OK button masher, got a stupid flashy stylish combo game instead. Can't complain. Also easily one of the better/beefier art books I've seen packed in.

I got it hoping it would be more newb friendly, it's cool for what it is, beat it but don't feel like I need it in my life anymore, keeping the goodies selling the game back to gamestop!:D

PAULINK

I microwave steaks.
man for the longest time I had no idea what the arrows were for, I shook the controller, used buttons, mashed the sticks, until I realized there was a touch pad. What a weird way to do finishers.

Using the touchpad feels so much better than hitting buttons. I think this is how those finisher QTEs we've been enjoying in games since God of War were always supposed to feel.

Fingers crossed for some DLC costumes tomorrow. I'd have loved more outfits in the game.

Finally got the game after quite an ordeal. I am super impressed with the package, the artbook is "holy shit" levels of quality. I really hate the ridiculous cover censorship tho, have her wearing two bikini tops, really? XD

Yeah, I wish we didn't have to do that, but we were told in no uncertain terms that the cover was showing too much cleavage for the game to be stocked on store shelves. Welcome to puritanical America, I guess!

At least it was just the cover art, though. And we included a reversible cover to help make up for that. ;)

I LOVE the touchpad for QTEs. It is extremely simple, oddly satisfying and I've never had one fail. I hope God of War uses them, I absolutely hate any analog stick use in QTEs.

Recorded my video, but I'll probably post it next week since I have content slated for this week and don't want any big gaps in coverage. Not like there's a lack of positive impressions in this thread anyway.

Cover censorship is ridiculous (thanks ESRB) but reversible covers certainly make up for it--especially if they don't have the logos on the front and especially not the info on the back (keep the title on the spine tho).

Kagura and Saya are baleful bloods too. They were born to end the war and as a fuunyn Eugenics program. Their father was a pretty awesome vampire and their mothers are cousins of Aya and Saki.

I was honestly pretty confused about WTF is going on with the whole vampire/baleful bloods thing, other than lore it didn't seem to really matter in the story and I assume that's all explained much better in the earlier games

ShinMaruku

They should remaster Kagura and that would explain things better. It's basically vampires having a war with a human clan who was able to fight undead called the baleful blood. They were fighting for years then recently a crazy corporation used both to try to take over the world and created a zombie outbreak.

Now some people thought the war was stupid and convinced one of the vampires to bone two baleful blood ladies, they both gave him Kagura and Saya who are neither on the baleful blood nor vampire side.

I'm really thankfull for the reversible covers, I'm using the one for Shinovi Versus and will also use it for Onechanbara since they are both great.

Whelp finally beat Hard Mode Mission 9. Now mission 10 is being dumb. I always run out of weaker enemies to kill to keep the kill count active before I kill the stupid dog bosses and then the kill count drops.
