Opinion: Killzone 2 has the best gun feedback in any game released since last gen

Just rewatching some of the old Killzone 2 videos reminded me that for the last few years nothing released in the shooter category has ecplised the gunplay of Killzone 2. What constitutes satisfying gunplay in my eyes is it should have excellent

Weapon feedback - every bullet should feel impactful,The bullet should clearly feel like it is impacting the enemy, Ragdoll physics etc... Every bullet fired should kick up dust when it hits the ground, remove chunks of concrete when it hits pillars etc. Realistic Muzzle Flash is a must and ofcourse it should have awesome reload animation

Recoil - Weapons should not feel like pea shooters but should feel weighty and have sufficient kick back.

Gun sounds - Should sound impactful and powerful everytime anyone fires

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV3TIMVRTiU

Just watching this video again shows once again how perfectly KZ2 combines these simple elements to create gunplay nirvana. Pure and beautiful chaos in KZ2's gun battles that are yet to be surpassed last gen and this gen in my opinion. Using Sta 14 beginning at 4:00 min in the video feels so freaking good. Online matches using that gun was such a blast!

I have looked for games released last gen and this gen that come close to combining the above elements but from the games I played nothing has done it quite like KZ2. Uncharted ( Guns sounds tame. May be a design decision though ) , Gears ( good but not quite there) , Resistance series ( nowhere close ) , Vanquish ( Excellent core mechanics but firing guns in vanquish feels like firing pea shooters. Does not compete in the gunplay department ) , COD ( Horrid Horrid Horrid gun feedback ) etc...
The closest I think we have come close to replicating this level of gunplay last gen was in Max Payne 3 which while does not feel as satisfying as KZ2 comes close. If I had to think of older games I can say probably the original Fear had similarly great gameplay. I am told however that Wolfenstein the new order resembles exactly what I like about KZ2.

So GAF What games from last gen and this gen do you think do gunplay as well and combine some of the elements that I have mentioned as well as KZ2? I would love to try them out!

KZ2 had the best gunplay on last gen systems, hands-down. The sound design was amazing as well, I remember being blown away by the sound changing as the magazine emptied.

Rage beats the pants off Killzone 2 and wonders why you're still talking about one of the worst shooters ever made.

It's AMAZING to shoot an enemy and watch it continue to run at you for a few moments with its head shot off, arms eventually spiralling and losing balance until it skids into the wall.

I'd be really curious how you'd define "best gunplay," because... I can't agree with this at all. The narrow FOV, poor map layout, TTK on the enemy side... lots of things make it a really frustrating experience.

Max Payne 3, Killing Floor, and Red Orchestra 2 (Plus Rising Storm) are all better. Metro Last Light is another possibility, but it has been awhile since I have played it

It's very good. Another great contender is Space Marine, the Warhammer 40k game. Guns felt super powerful, especially for a 3rd person shooter.

I like this thread, despite that small delay which to be honest gave me a good feeling after I heard the little kill chime I absolutely loved playing KZ2. I don't usually play multiplayer shooter games frequently but I was like 2 ranks before the hitting max rank. Great guns, fun as hell times playing online it was like COD4 all over again. I absolutely loved the heavy type of gameplay oh man I'm missing it just thinking about it :( KZ3 was real cool too but didn't have that feeling, they changed it a lot.

Forgot to add in one thing, killing players & going on sprees with shotguns was the most amazing feeling ever.

Metro Last Light was meh I thought in the gun play department. Competent but not as good. Need to try out Red Orchestra 2. Thanks for the suggestion!

Mann, i miss Killzone 2 !

It's one of the best FPS shooters of all time to me, almost everything was there.

Really wish Guerrila Games made something dark and gritty with solid gunplay instead of going all colors and COD style controls with Killzone 3 and Shadow Fall.

Killzone 2 had personality.

There is a part early on in that video where the guy empties an entire clip and misses the enemy thats a few feet in front of him. That is not realistic 'recoil' in any way.

Syndicate's shotgun was pretty incredible as well. Most of Syndicate was great, just not the vaseline visuals.

Co-op in that game is near-perfection, with some of the most intelligent-seeming enemies I've encountered.

Rage beats nothing at anything.
LOL

I didn't know shitposting was allowed on GAF.

I can't remember much about this game, but I do remember how great the shooting felt. Killzone was decent but wrapped in so much monotony that the gun feedback didn't stand out as much to me. I did buy it based on the demo, though, so I must have liked something about it...

Hard for me to pin down, I think it was a combination of the atmosphere, models, lighting, weight, and sound design.

I know the FOV wasn't great, but the TTK never really bothered me, and I can't say that the map design sticks out in my head (for better or for worse).

Something about it just clicked with me.

no, didn't you hear? Guns are really, really heavy. Like 50 pounds. Player character probably just had a hard time keeping a bead on the enemy because of all that weight

Interesting. I played the Syndicate demo and did not find it particularly great. Need to give it a shot again though if the shooting is that good!

The player sucked.

Hard to compare in retrospect but i rember being impressed. I wish Shadowfall was more gritty like Killzone2. Guns were less satisfying too.

I've heard good things about The Order 1886 in this departement.

Too late for that. KZ2 will just have a cult following now. GG is moving on to a new IP. If GG Cambridge are taking over Killzone then I hope they look at KZ2 for artstyle and gunplay inspiration.

Well I'd agree with you here but I thought personally that many of Killzone 2's maps were extraordinarily well designed and had a really nice flow and feel to them once you figured out the game.

the guns did feel great. its such a shame that movement was bogged down by that horrendous input lag. and do not give me the "its supposed to feel weighty" BS, the game is hampered by pretty horrendous lag between the users input and the action being performed on screen, that is completely separate to the movement acceleration GG did to make the game feel weighty.

Max Payne 3 is the best since the hit reactions are actually realistic but Killzone 2 a close second. Rage has nothing but lame canned animations, bleh BLEH

EDIT: BLEEEHHH

Haven't played Killzone 2 but it can't be better than Max Payne 3's gunplay. That felt so good.

Play it! It is better than MP3 in my opinion. I am not sure if there is still an online community for the game though. The single player campaign however should serve as a nice overview of how good the gunplay is!

Red Orchestra 2, Killing Floor, F.E.A.R., and any Battlefield game do gun feedback way better than Killzone, just to mention a couple.

Trying to play Killzone 2 like an action game with the PS3 controller is like trying to eat a plate of spaghetti with a spoon. It's incredibly cumbersome, and not in a good way.

I know the FOV wasn't great, but the TTK never really bothered me, and I can't say that the map design sticks out in my head (for better or for worse).

Something about it just clicked with me.

The time for me to turn around and engage with enemies who are shooting me from behind is way too slow due to the excessive input lag. Most of my deaths in Killzone 2 were due to the game's controls, rather than my lack of skill or clever encounters, which themselves were pretty boring.

I consider encounter design and enemy reactivity to be a part of the gunplay, and KZ2's encounters were quite bland.

It's by no means realistic, which makes it incredibly frustrating. I'll explain more after this:

no, didn't you hear? Guns are really, really heavy. Like 50 pounds. Player character probably just had a hard time keeping a bead on the enemy because of all that weight

Killzone feels like a game trying to be realistic as translated by people who've been told how guns work by someone who was especially weak and had improper form and had never shot a gun before. I mean, even the camera height is really short.

Based on the kick, input lag, and player height, it seems like the game's trying to emulate the experience of a twelve year old boy who's never held a gun before in his life.

Red Orchestra 2, Killing Floor, F.E.A.R., and any Battlefield game do gun feedback way better than Killzone, just to mention a couple.

Trying to play Killzone 2 like an action game on the PS3 controller is like trying to eat spaghetti with a fork.

...how are you supposed to eat spaghetti?
