OPINION: Wii U, best console to own in 2014, easily

For me, someone who didn't have a SNES growing up, it's been one of the best purchasing decisions I've ever made honestly. A day barely goes by when I'm not turning on the Wii U for a quick gaming session. Such a breath of fresh air from the grimdark, cinematic "gaming" experiences found elsewhere. Playing Super Metroid on the gamepad is pure bliss.
Strange way to spin the lack of select 3rd party games into a positive. Every system has plenty of non "cinematic" games.
"mature racing games"

what the actual duck
It sounds like he prefers racing games with real cars.

I assume he means those in which you use real cars and participate in races that don't include turtle shell power ups. Come on guys, I really don't think he was trying to be condescending.

then "realistic" would suffice

I don't even know if this can be up for debate.

Whether you like Nintendo, their games, or the Wii U, they had the superior lineup of games this year for their fans. You can't possibly say Sony or MS had good lineups in 2014. They had decent offerings to get them through until 2015.

I like horror, stealth/action, and sports games. Wii u doesn't have that.

then again, he is talking about "Exclusive/first party" and sony doesn't have that either, REMEMBER... SONY. the playstation 4 have those, but are third party

TLoU counts as Action/Stealth and can at times fill the horror slot. And P.T. while only a very short demo, was a skin crawling experience that's available on one console.

For me it's been the best console since its launch. Sure, I'm playing my PS3 more because I'm trying to catch up with my backlog but the Wii U has built a very solid library so far and 2015 looks like another good year for the system. At the same, 2015 is looking great for the PS4.

Wii U 4 lyf.

Folks should impulse purchase one. Nearly at that price if you shop around. Just stick to physical copies IMO.

The only I'm interested in is Bayo 2 but damn am I almost interested enough to plop down some moola for a WiiU. I'll resist, probably see a price drop within the next year.

You should just get a $200 refurb and call it a day. Really wont get better than that

OP, that has to have a big asterisk on the title...

Wii U is the best console to own this year(or any year) if

1. You don't care about third parties

2. You don't care about first parties of the other consoles

3. You don't care about a majority of games outside of Nintendo franchises

My Wii U, as much as i enjoy playing on it, would not carry me through a whole year without my PS4 as my main unit.

A majority of people in this thread are listing the WIi U with another main unit, this is because they aren't going to stand around for months on end waiting for Nintendo to get off their ass and make another Mario.

Nintendo always has great first party shit, but that's all they have. Its not enough on its own personally. My PS4 is what i use every day and the one i find the most useful.

Or wait 5 weeks to see if he can get a new one for that price. Online of course. No sense in standing outside in the cold when you could be at home with family.
Debating whether or not I should do the same thing. If I see a Black Friday deal for $200, I'll probably jump on it. Was planning on waiting for Zelda, but I do like a deal. Question: What games are available on VC? Can I play Mario 64, Wave Race and OoT?

refurbished Wii Us from nintendo.com are brand new, probably recalled units

Really depends on your tastes, but Wii U has definitely been my favorite console so far. Bought more games for it than any other system this year, and I own all 5 consoles (and PC).

I disagree but only because outside of Zelda, Pokemon and Animal Crossing I don't care much for Nintendo exclusives. When I think back to why I owned an NES or SNES it was for games from Capcom, Konami, Squaresoft etc, it had very little to do with anything coming from Nintendo.

In today's world Nintendo does not get third party games. It won't get Shadows of Mirror, Far Cry 4 or Dragon Age or Final Fantasy XV or No Mans Sky so I have less and less interest in buying one. If I do ever choose to pick one up it would be for co op opportunities with my daughter since I will largely admit that it's the one major advantage that Nintendo does have.

With the exception of the Fire Emblem series, and most of their old games (NES, SNES eras), I find Nintendo's output over the past decade and a half to be incredibly patronizing. I'm not saying their games are bad, they just treat me like I'm incompetent, which is really annoying. Their old games were basically like what the Souls games are today. Why can't they just do what they used to do?

It's funny because when people get hit with shit like W101 the complaints start rolling in off the charts about inaccessibility.

My man. Most anticipated game for me in a long time. WiLD looks fantastic too.

Now where the hell is Rodea: the sky soldier?

mk8 and Hyrule Warriors alone make it my vote.

Hyrule Warriors shouldnt be over looked. there is a ton of content in this game.

Yep, Nintendo has good exclusives although they miss out on big multiplatform games.

Personally, I can wait for Zelda to be released to decide when to buy a Wii U.

Bayonetta 2 doesn't pass my "Am I embarrassed being seen playing this by my significant other?" test, but Tropical Freeze, Smash, and Mario Kart are all incredible games.

I played the Bayonetta 2 demo alone. Then I played it in front of my girlfriend. Then she played it. She now wants to play the full game.

If you're okay playing it alone, but you're embarassed to play it in front of him/her, I'd say it's more your problem than the game's.

And they look great.

I'd say this looks okay. The obvious fact is, Wii U is not too powerful for today's standards, still it's quite powerful considering the power it needs to work. It also has some unique features which I'd love to see being used more. Too bad the Zombi U developers and Deus Ex HR DC developers won't be allowed to make any more games for the Wii U. There's still more great games on the system than I can keep up with (it competes with my huge Steam backlog and my 3DS which has been on fire lately) so I can't really complain. It probably helps that my tastes aren't too limited. I'll play almost anything that's good when I'm in the mood.

The other consoles are not that interesting to me. Rather than buying one of them I'd just upgrade my PC. PS4 might be the first Sony console where I actually like the concept behind the hardware but their exclusive content is questionable. Xbone just fails to appeal to me at all somehow, though I'm sure I'm not being fair to it. Plus, I understand they both keep online play behind paywalls which is just laughable. Don't really understand why so many people feel that's alright.

I am genuinely bemused someone can love super meat boy and hate mario, or love sonic & knuckles but be disinterested in DKTF

Grew up with Sonic, Meat Boy is way way way faster and more exciting than Mario.

I mean sure I can see the Sonic comparison, but Meat Boy is literally nothing like any Nintendo platformer I've played.

Wii U and 3DS together have a killer library this gen. I don't play games at all that often, and Wii U has been getting great games at a decent enough pace. Also games that last. It's not an "okay I finished. Next" ... Mario 3D World stays killer in multiplayer. So much fun!

I feel like the games I want on other consoles will be available on PC. Not that my PC currently is that strong, but I feel I'd rather invest in a computer in the future rather than a a PS4 or Xbone. Unless Silent Hills turns out to be console exclusive, but when that game is out we're already far far ahead so I can't predict anything.

What if you care about a majority of games outside of Nintendo franchises, you care about other first-party console games (I have a launch PS4 that's had nothing but TLoU Remastered and Blu-rays in it, so I sure do care and am waiting patiently for another exclusive) and also care about third-party titles, but don't really think that's relevant to the console discussion because you play the definitive versions on PC? Note, I'm not an anomaly but rather a lot like everyone I know or follow in and outside of the games industry.

Wii U's library as it stands destroys thenew consoles. It's single remaster (Zelda) is better than every other remaster on the new consoles combined, both in the original game and the upgrades. Its first party output has been phenomenal instead of dismal. It may not have much third party support, but the grass isn't much greener. Watch Dogs? Thief? Destiny? Whatever. Also, Bayonetta 2.

Yes, Gran Turismo is more mature than Mario Kart.

We're not actually debating this are we??

Actually that is an interesting point you make. What makes it more mature? Because it's realistic?
Both games are comparatively challenging in their own way. Mario Kart isn't just 'for kids' because it looks colorful.

A real "mature racing gaming" would be BMX XXX or something...

If pcs are excluded from the discussion for not being gaming consoles then why are they used to undermine ps4/x1 multiplats as if everyone owns a gaming pc? With the amount of squealing in spec threads recently, you're going to need pretty expensive hardware to vastly outpace the consoles anyway.

I've been satisfied with my Wii U because it is offering the kinds of games I want from a Nintendo system (side scrolling platformers, kart racers, action games) but the reason I feel I will want a PS4 or XBOne will be when the next wave of Western RPGs like the Elder Scrolls, Fallouts, Mass Effects start to pop up.

I bought a 360 when there was a healthy amount of fighters and RPGs on the system.

I will probably get a PS4 when I see those kinds of game release en masse.

If you have a PC, sure, none of those reasons apply,

But for those of us who game exclusively on console and don't have a PC, the WIi U is definitely not the choice of best unit, or the one i could stand to spend a majority of my time on because of its output(or lackthereof)

It doesn't matter in the end whether its another console, or a PC, the Wii U is not going to be a majority of people's first idea for a gaming platform they use exclusively.
