Original version of Doom 3 can no longer be individually purchased on Steam

I've had Doom 3 on my wishlist for a long time now, been waiting to pick it up but sales didn't reduce the price too much. Bethesda wasn't targeting it for sales since they knew BFG edition was coming.

But I just checked my wishlist and Doom 3 is still on there...showing up for $99 lol

Idk if it's too late but making BFG moddable (if it isn't already) would be excellent. I keep hearing it can't be modded but I don't know how accurate that is. Idk if Bethesda can do anything about that, though.

To be honest, I think simply supplying the game with BFG would be enough. That way there's no reason for confusion until you need to figure out which to install (probably not, you'll see Doom 3 and Doom 3 BFG right next to each other, and if you're not super low on space and just download both), and you'd get more willing to give BFG a chance.

Granted, it WOULD cost more, but it's better than nothing. Now they need to go and pay attention to the fact they went and made Final Doom and Doom II Master Levels unbuyable. What the hell?

I think the issue is not so much the option to get BFG or not, it's moreso that BFG has differences. It doesn't support mods (yet), has lighting changes and various downgrades. If it was just vanilla Doom 3, with some extras attached, it would be a different situation.

Speaking of original Doom 3.

It won't work, it says Doom 3 has stopped working.

And it's not the Steam version, it's the original discs.

I tried running with comp mode and admin but nope.

:(

I have Vista btw

Yeah, I think people might care if they patched those changes onto regular Doom 3, but if you could toggle them (or make a separate "BFG mode") it'd be a fairly minor issue at worst, just that they jacked the price up effectively which will sort itself out in a few months anyway.

Oh this would be so ideal. I'd like to have my regular Doom 3 be tied to my Steam account as well.

Looks like iD and Bethesda are trying to make this right.

“We do realize that there are fans that would like to purchase the original version of the game, and we’re looking into options for them,” said the company in a statement. “When there’s new info to share, we’ll let everyone know.”

They should just combine the original Doom 3 with BFG edition. When you purchase the BFG edition, you get the original Doom 3 in your Steam Library as well. Win Win for everyone, they get their sales, we get the game we actually want.

Or you can just buy it on Gamefly, comes with a Steam key. Hopefully they do some kind of sale.

Why do they have to take so long and "look into options?" Can't they just pick up the phone and go, "hey Gabe, put it back up there for 20 bucks or whatever we were selling it for?"

Pretty sure it wouldn't take more than fifteen minutes if they actually wanted to do it. All the files are still there and separate from BFG, since people who already own Doom 3 can still download it and weren't upgraded to the new version.

Yeah what is this "looking into options" bull shit?

They made an inferior product that they're charging a higher price for, and to convince people to buy it they just straight up removed the one that was a better value.

A fix is just putting it back up for sale on all those sites it was for sale on.

This was a real asshole move.

Huh? You're getting Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, and the Lost Missions for 30 bucks, and you're bitching about the price? Wasn't Doom 3 by itself 20 bucks on Steam?

The only complaints people seem to go on and on about is it's not equal to Sikkmod and some go on about the flashlight. It's not inferior. The improvements really help the game in my opinion. I agree, it's a great deal for what your getting.

Kind of a good point, you would think Bethesda and iD have such a good relationship with Valve that they can just get this done very fast.

Well some of us, myself included, increase the value based on a modded title.

Modding Doom 3 gives much better visuals in terms of high resolutions textures and incredible post processing effects that just blow the BFG edition out of the water. Then you can tailor the game to how you want to play, want the flashlight permanently out? Fine. Want to create little escort bots that can attack enemies? Fine. Want to put in new monsters or scenarios? Fine.
Finally, you can play different games like the Doom 3 Dark Mod, which ports the original Thief into the Doom 3 engine.

Now you can see why BFG is essentially worthless to me.

Utilizing that logic, I can argue that since the package comes with Doom 1 and 2 iWADS, and seeing as how no other game has more mods than Doom 1 and 2, the value of the BFG edition far outclasses Doom 3's standalone value, seeing as how it has an astronomically small (by comparison) mod variety.

Sure, that argument is perfectly viable.

I personally don't see any value in Doom 1 and Doom 2 since I could care less about playing through those games again. But it is subjective.

Using that logic, why should we even touch Doom 3 BFG when we can just buy Doom 1 and Doom 2 for less than the Doom 3 BFG package?

What we should be complaining about is Master Levels of Doom II and Final Doom being taken down. It's not like Doom 3 BFG have ports or remakes of those two games. It doesn't make any sense to take them down off of Steam. Of course, this doesn't mean they should've taken down the old Doom 3, but there is at least some logic in it.

Master Levels and Final Doom were taken off of Steam too??

Between Rage's shoddy release, the lackluster quality of Doom 3 BFG, and now having Doom titles being taken off of Steam, I have to wonder: just what the hell is Bethidsta thinking?

Yeah, go check Steam. You can't even buy the Super ID Pack to get them anymore! Apparently the only Doom titles Bethesda cares about is Ultimate Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 BFG

This shit happens all the time on digital marketplaces. New version of old game comes out for more money than old game was selling for, old game disappears.

Zombie Driver was also pulled off Steam this week in favor of Zombie Driver HD. Price of the new one is the same as the old one, though (I think so anyway), so it's not so bad.

I think they had to modify part of the code to release the doom 3 engine as open source due to a patent problem.

Gonna guess that they are no longer selling the infringing game just in case, and, if they decided to rerelease the original doom 3, it will have the same change, so it won't really be the original.

Yeah, I just saw that. I don't understand this at all.

They pulled games off (Master Levels and Final Doom) that have no alternate digital replacements, though.

Doom 3 and the BFG edition are substantially enough different that the new one shouldn't replace the other, regardless of price or perceived value you place on it. Whether it's better or not isn't relevant, because it's different enough that there is no clear winner, so the consumer should be given the choice.

Haha, how pathetic. If they're going to do that then they should just include them for free with the BFG edition.

Hence my example, it's faulty logic.

I never said they should and don't agree with the original being taken down, it was simply a rebuttal to the notion that the BFG edition was somehow unfairly priced.

update

This is interesting, but they have removed the 'Super iD Pack' from Steam entirely.

I was checking out the store today and see if Doom 3 was available yet, but I couldn't even buy it period.

Its still listed in the store, but no way to buy it. I started digging a little more and the pack it was sold with is completely removed from the store.

URL where the pack initially was available, which redirects you to the main store page.

Google cached version of the URL.

Yep, now Final Doom, Master Levels and Doom 3 (+expansion) are completely unbuyable. They do still have store pages, though, which suggests this is only a temporary thing. Other games normally disappear completely from the store the instant they're pulled.

Wtf are they doing? I really do love the BFG edition but there is no reason to remove anything from Steam. Damn.
