OXM: 8 Xbox One myths addressed

In June I wrote a little feature about some of the more persistent and malignant Xbox One myths, following a troublesome E3 for the platform. Alas, Microsoft hasn't nailed down the message just yet - hence this follow-up, which revisits a few of the usual suspects and hopefully addresses more recent controversies.
There's a lot written under each bullet point if you want to read further: OXM
  • 1. Kinect will secretly gather data about you
[*]2. Xbox One can't do "true 1080p gaming"
[*]3. Microsoft will sell the Xbox One without Kinect
[*]4. Microsoft doesn't have any real exclusives or studios
[*]5. Microsoft will sneakily bring back Xbox One's DRM
    [*]6. There are manufacturing problems
[*]7. IllumiRoom is down for release on Xbox One
[*]8. Microsoft doesn't care about independent developers

If OXM is having to do an article like this for their readers you know Microsoft has royally fucked up.

2. Xbox One can't do "true 1080p gaming"

A response to CBOAT?

No, just the general tone that we are hearing that things are 720-900p instead of 1080. Buttocks has nothing to do with it I imagine.

I have to say after reading the article it wasn't as much a walled defence of things as I expected. Though I would not have labelled the first party as fearsome.

Wow.

The fact that this article exists is the culmination of everything that's happened since the reveal. What a clusterfuck.

whether of nor this is all accurate this'll just be shrugged off since who is going to trust Official Xbox Magazine to be critical of their namesake regardless of if there is a direct connection to microsoft.

3. Microsoft will sell the Xbox One without Kinect.

Sweet. The temptation on getting it at launch is even less now. Why not wait for the cheaper version without the paperweight.

Edit: i'm dumb.

The Sony viral marketers have really done a number on distorting MS' message. They've been doing an exceptional job, and MS hasn't been helping themselves out either. A perfect storm of marketing work.

I cannot believe they did this, or even had to do this. That is crazy. If I look at the competition, what types of Myths are there at this point? Honestly, I cannot think of any major Myths of the PS4 that need to be explained.

I dont blame this on the Xbox One, That says so much about Microsoft's PR.

Also, the Selling Xbox One without Kinect section could come back and bite them in the rear in the future.

Umm. This is a list of myths, not facts.

They're saying it's a myth that a kinectless XBO will come out.

What's up with OP suddenly posting multiple 'positive' Xbox One threads?

Nothing wrong with being positive, but it's suspicious.

Privacy is my #1 concern with the Xbox and privacy groups will be having a field day with it, especially how Skype works on it when it comes out. It won't take long for the truth to come out.

Seems like the only thing that has a shorter shelf than Microsoft's policies is their executives. I don't see how we can trust anything they say.

It's like watching Fox News man the damage control stations.

LMAO. Yes. I did think this before I entered actually.

When your official mag needs to dispell myths about your latest hardware, you done be in deep shit.

Aww. My own fault for jumping to conclusions. My bad!

I still say it will happen though, it's guaranteed.

It's not suspicious at all and I don't think I have ever seen a positive XB1 thread. You think this is a positive thread?

shinobi602 posts a lot of the interesting articles on this site and he quite clearly posts whatever he finds whether good or bad for whatever company.

A defensive list attempting to correct common misconceptions is not necessarily positive X1 news. As many have already pointed out, the fact that this list exists is evidence of the weak position MS are in. It mirrors what was happening to Sony back in 2006.

btw, isn't your avatar suspicious by your own standard?

A response to CBOAT?

Looking at Skeff's post it can,but not with deferred engines?

1080p framebuffer using forward rendering and no AA at 32 bits per pixel would be ~24mb IIRC, however using deferred rendering which is far more likely would put it at the total of 2073600 pixels so at differing BPP(Bytes per pixel) we would get:

16 BPP: 31.64mb
20 BPP: 39.55mb
24 BPP: 47.46mb
28 BPP: 55.37mb
32 BPP: 63.28mb

As a reference BF3 (1080p on PC) is 20BPP and KZ:SF is 24BPP both without AA. I can't imagine Next Gen going any lower than 16BPP.

I know Mattrick and Major Nelson did a terrible job, but calling them Sony viral marketers is a little harsh.

I think number 6 pretty much covers that

Yeah, guess you are right. I had it in my mind there was other manufacturing problems. In any case it was more of a CBOAT joke, because we all know everything is going to be PR spin anyway. Localization issues, what a load of crud.

yuk yuk yuk :) At this point they very well could have been with how much damage Mattrick did. According to us, at least - the real proof will be when anyone can get their hands on it.

This remains a legitimate concern, in light of revelations about the National Security Association's activities in the US, but sturdy safeguards appear to be in place.

"National Security Association"?

Really?

My favorite part of this article is the multiple references to comments made by MS employees as some irrefutible proof of sonething happening or not happening. The whole reason this article was written was because MS has changed their policies and messaging. Why should we put any weight in what they say now?
