Recently I was thinking a lot about unreleased games (probably because I was just playing some unreleased Atomiswave games I got sent from a collector)....or games we got a taste of before they were ultimately cancelled; and you really can't think of a subject like that without thinking of P.T. and Silent Hills.
From P.T.'s announcement to ultimate reveal of being part of the Silent Hill universe the entire process was amazing and confusing and layered in puzzle solving. Even the fake studio invented for the demo reveal (7780's Studio) factored into the whole world building. I mean everyone knows Kojima loves to layer his games with hidden meaning and fourth wall breaks but P.T. somehow felt like the culmination of all of those wild ideas come to live as their own game.
Plus this wasn't even a main project for Kojima. This is him playing around to "see what happens"...and somehow what happened was one of the best horror experiences of the last gen. (still seems weird to call PS4 last gen)
I absolutely loved following along online as people unraveled the mysteries behind P.T. and finally "solved it" just to find out the entire experience was just a playable teaser for a new Silent Hill game starring Norman Reedus...and Guillermo del Toro was involved as a writer too? That's not something you get every day.
Plus people can't even agree on how the puzzles are finally "solved". I remember hooking up a microphone into my PS4 controller and talking into it because I read that might help. I have zero idea if it did but doing all these weird and random actions in hopes of cracking the P.T. code was an awesome experience for sure.
Then Konami screwed it all up like they always manage to, fired Kojima and cancelled Silent Hills. Probably made another Pachislot machine after that lol
But as far as demos go? Hands down IMO the best demo ever made.
I cant remember many other demos that never made it to final game status? Anyone have any other instances of that? I think the only other one I remember was Thrill Kill
