Pachter: "I don't know why Iwata is still employed"; should bring old games to mobile

Old NES/GBA games on mobile? Not a bad idea.

Put them on for FREE? Terrible idea.

Doesn't everyone freak the fuck out when classics are put on mobile phones? Yet everyone else seems to wish this for Nintendo.
Definitely not the same people.

But those against their favorite games ported to mobile are an odd minority of nerds anyway.

I always thought Animal crossing as smart phone game or pokemon being a f2p mobile title would be insanely profitable. As much as fans would cringe at the idea.

Animal Crossing is already insanely profitable though. Same with Pokemon. Why is it only Nintendo that has to go the mobile route? Why isn't this same sentiment being expressed regarding Sony and Microsoft's back catalogues?

Free iOS/Android install with IAP for powerups, that is the only way to save Nintendo....the company that has billions in the bank.

There is brand new native support for controllers in ios7. Presumably a real controller push is right around the corner.

Even if there's a push, how many people do you honestly think are going to hook up a controller to an iPhone? It pretty much defeats the main reason people game on phones (convenience).

How do you make tons of money by giving stuff away for free??

I like my iphone, but I never want to see nintendo's games on something with out physical controls. Hell i don't want to see their games on any device that doesn't have the word nintendo molded into its plastic.

I just wanna play Mega Man Battle Network on something other than an emulator

guess what it would be emulated and not a port if brought to phones. I'm sure Capcom is finally done losing money on battle network.

Wouldn't that only encourage that audience to wait for more games on ios instead of buying nintendo consoles?

I mean why but something else when I can just wait to get it on ios or even worse why buy something else when this is enough for me.

That is kinda what happened with the wii and the wii u. That audience got their fill and moved on.

Also would it really help that much? One game made more than like all of the ios store combined or something like that right?

Also gaming on the phone sucks IMO

Why is this "Nintendo on mobile" still a thing? It sounds like a horrible idea especially for long term profits. But I guess I'm not an analyst

Not really. No one buys a console solely for the e-shop. So it's not like seeing these games on mobile will suddenly make people NOT buy the console. This is just free money. Even if the games play like shit. Just sell the older titles that the mass market isn't buying anyways. All new titles should be kept to their hardware (3DS + Wii U).

I don't know if replacing Iwata would really be any real help with nintendo being such an inward facing company.

If you look at how sony got back on track after flailing with the ps3, you can see how Sony Europe and Sony America (Western Divisions) had major influences on the design and the philosophy of the ps4. Nintendo doesn't have that so Iwata would just be replaced with someone just as closed minded.

It's not rocket science. Putting their old exclusive content on other platforms, content that is 'good enough', immediately devalues their own platforms. Sorry, but old Nintendo stuff (N64 stuff aside) is just coded so smoothly that it is timeless. I just don't buy the premise that it would work as an advertisement.

I honestly don't understand this love for Iwata. He SHOULD be ousted given the performance of Nintendo's consoles space between the Wii and Wii U. Hell, he squander an entire damn year!

If Iwata was in any other company, he'd gotten the boot already.

If he was at Nokia he'd get to tank the shares for 3 more years then get a personal payoff in the millions and be in the running as CEO of Microsoft.

But doing that would mean Nintendo is devaluing their IP by selling their 10+ year old games for reasonable prices!! (I actually don't want Nintendo on mobile devices, but the prices on the other hand...)

Animal Crossing is already insanely profitable though. Same with Pokemon. Why is it only Nintendo that has to go the mobile route? Why isn't this same sentiment being expressed regarding Sony and Microsoft's back catalogues?

Oh I'm not saying it has to just the those two franchises seem like perfect fits for the mobile space.

Completely agree. I don't see what the problem is with putting legacy games on phones and tablets. Re-launch the Virtual Console and welcome Android and iOS to the party.

Don't even bother.

The Pachter hate is embarrassing

The hate for traditional video game devices from people like him is even more embarrassing. Not everything needs to go mobile. It's okay if the 3DS doesn't sell as much as an iOS device. It's even okay if it doesn't outsell the DS. You can't expect every new hardware to outsell the last. It's unrealistic unless you're a special case like Apple.

For free? lol

Your brand doesn't just stay popular forever. I have young cousins that while they know Mario are more concerned with Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies b/c they play that on their parents phone. Releasing NES games for free keeps Mario out there. They learn about Mario, they enjoy Mario games and then they go buy a N64/Gamecube/DS game on a phone for $5. They really like it so they go buy a 3DS to get the new stuff, this is what he is suggesting.

It boggles my mind as well that Nintendo doesn't leverage their older catalog. People will make posts about "LOLBUTTONS" but that's being really short sighted.

Still think putting their franchises on mobile is an awful idea. Yeah they'll make some money, but they'd be competing against 3ds. "Why buy a link between worlds when a link to the past is here", which will eventually turn to "why buy a link between worlds on 3ds, they'll put it on iPhone eventually". There are plenty of things they can do to increase their streams of income, but putting their star ip's on another platform isn't one of them.

I wonder why no one suggest Microsoft or Sony to put their ip's on iOS, if they won't put their heavy hitters there than why expect Nintendo? The best thing I think Nintendo can do with apps is use them as companions to their own games and systems, which I believe they will do.

Edit: what Nintendo could also do is release a $50 handheld to play legacy games for cheap.

Hate for traditional video game devices?

Alright buddy. Keep fighting the good fight.

Nintendo should launch older Pokemon games on mobiles and charge a dollar or two for them. Yeah I know, emulators... But still, I think it would make Nintendo a hell lot of money.

Great idea - especially if you consider that e.g. a Mario plattformer requires precise and fast controls which every phone offers.

Ironie off. Nintendo's games are far too complex for phones. They are made for dedicated gaming systems and that's where they should be and stay.

I agree with him. Nintendo are presumably in this business to sell games and there's a vast userbase lying untapped right in front of them. Why not, you know, sell some games..?

All that I know is if these are the N fans that they have left, willing to defend pretty much everything they do til the grave, well N isn't going to last much longer in this era making consoles.

You don't just let mobile slide by because of pride issues. No one is stepping up in the tens of millions to buy Mario anymore. They have already devalued the brand. Who cares. Get with it and start releasing stuff on mobile. Charge hideous amounts of royalties. Do something because N is fast becoming a joke at this point.

Putting SNES, Game Boy games on mobile is digging into a gold mine
How is he wrong.... Do you see the copy cats on IOS and Android

But declined it after the anti consumer actions and high price

I LOVE Secret of Mana

I hate playing it with touch controls

I can't even make an a accurate jump with Sonic in StH 1

Fukc, trying to play Nintendo precision games on my phone is a broken phone (bouncing off my wall) waiting to happen!

You clearly haven't been on the internet the past couple years. It's been pure doom and gloom for all 3 console manufacturers in the media, with talks that they should all go mobile. It's ridiculous. And this is just Pachter echoing that bullshit as far as I'm concerned.

Why do they make new cartoons when everyone can watch old Looney Tunes one?

MS and Sony don't have a massive catalog of 8 and 16 bit games that would be embarrassingly simple to port like Nintendo does,
