Pachter: Sony in good position to buy WB

"Their acquisitions have been smaller, like Insomniac, and those are the kinds of acquisitions that I would expect,” said Pachter while speaking to Gaming Bolt. “I do think Sony is in a good position to buy Warner Bros. Interactive assets should they ever go on sale again. Depending on whether AT&T chooses to sell them, and how. If they just want to license their IP out, they will probably not go with exclusivity deals, because they won’t want the games limited to just one platform, but if they sell perpetual rights to Batman or Mortal Kombat, I think those assets would be pretty cool for Sony to fold into their lineup"

WB Games is not worth it unless you get some REALLY good IP rights to the DC properties with it. That's probably why the WB Games offer was taken off the table: couldn't come to a good offer that included decent rights to character IPs that was satisfactory.

Plus like others are saying MS could just outbid them if they wanted. But I don't think WB Games is a good get for them, either. Not unless whoever buys gets ownership of at least a few notable character IPs (or effectively such essentially, like rights to Batman games for 25 years or something xD).

Anyone have a reference to the list of IP the WBI owns?

I'd be all in for a Batman and Spiderman crossover game.

Sony really doesn't need to become embroiled in more IP that they do not own and cannot control. This has been the bane of their existence with the likes of Monster Hunter being baited exclusively off of their system in the past leading them to lose millions. Either buy the studio and IP as a whole or do nothing.

As little interest as I have in Microsoft at least their management understands this fact.

I could not care less about the Suicide Squad game or the new "batman" game, but I am interested in the Harry Potter game and the SF IP Monolith are working on (God I hope it has good combat like FEAR). So as a mainly PC gamer, I hope this wont happen, since compared to MS, Sony's games dont really come to PC (I know...Horizon, still though).

So this is irrelevant like 99% of the clickbait stuff Gamingbolt writes and Comicbook parrots. 🤔

Its not Sony’s style to buy a bunch of studios, they normally buy someone they have worked with to some extent. And they have been successful with there formula. Build quality studios.

Rather they buy a Japanese company/ studios

Pachter....

Nuff said lol

To be fair, he's just talking about positioning and doesn't say there is any interest on either side. If AT&T is expected a similar payday Zenimax, good luck.

Think it makes more sense for Sony to buy western studios they are already associated with, or if they were going for a big boy, focus on Japan as that's where they can't just be outbid by Microsoft or Amazon and so on quite so easily.

Fair enough. Can't say they make anything I'm interested in, but I get how others are.

I was curious how well their IPs have sold. It looks like Arkham City topped 12 million units lifetime. MK11 was the 5th best selling game in the US for 2019. I'd rather see NetherRealm gain independence than be sold to a platform holder.

That list of IPs will absolutely not be included in the sale. AT&T isn't selling WB's core IP as part of the sale (so things like Batman, Lord of the Rings, Justice League, The Matrix, Harry Potter, etc.) and would need to be apart of a separate licensing deal. WB is still keeping those IPs to service them through things like movies, tv shows, and comic books. They can even turn around and license Batman to other game studios if you don't negotiate exclusivity. The only IPs that would likely be included in a sale of WBIE are the actual gaming IPs like Mortal Kombat and Scribblenauts. That's partially why WB's previously-reported $4 billion asking price is considered absurd by many. If it came with those IPs, it would obviously be much, much more expensive.

Which was the developer behind legend of dragoon? That game was awesome! Sony Needs to fund great ideas with great devs behind them. Aquire studios i am Not so sure. MS is trying to brute force into the living room no mather what flooding the market buying devs. Ms bought bethesda yes, but bethesda does the kind of games that already were on MS platform they only removed them from Sony’s platform. Those games were already the best versions on xox, and it id not matter. I wont be missing them but i am sure some will do.

Would be cool if Sony got Batman. That means they got the two most popular superheroes for use exclusively if they wanted to (ignoring that dude who wears his underwear on the outside, never cared for much for that dude).

"Sony is in a good position to buy SOME WB game licenses IF and when they ever go on sale."

Must be a real slow news day.

Has any Pachter prediction ever came true? I would swear he is wrong almost 100% of the times, which in a way is useful to known what won’t happen.

Ah yes, Pachter. The man who at some point literally ranked at the bottom of the list of gaming analysts with an average of 41% of nailed predictions about the industry (literally statistically worse than random guessing).

How did this man climb up to become some sort of game media celebrity, again?

Sony isnt going to try and get a big publisher like the big boys are. Since they arent as big as Microsoft, Apple, Google or Amazon, Tencent, FB for them to make bug purchases they cant go around buying a publisher just to say, "me too". And if the purchase is big enough, itll be like blood in the water for the rest. They'll be there to potentially outbid Sony. And every single one of them can. I can see another studio or two. Maybe.

Sony is only in good position if MS isn't interested. MS was already interested in WB before. If they're up for sale again, MS could easily outbid Sony. Pachter has no clue. Sony's best chance is to go after individual studios that they already have relationships with or if they are after a big acquisition, look into Japanese publishers. It's much easier for a Japanese company to acquire another Japanese company than it is for an American company to acquire a Japanese company.
