PAL Charts - Week 08, 2009

slaughterking said:
Not many I bet. This is most likely an issue for a limited circle of gamers of whom the most have the option of buying the PS3 version or the arcade stick. Everyone else probably doesn't even realise how crappy it really is or just plays with the analog stick anyway.

I dont think there are that many multi platform owners though? If so why do to the vast majority of titles sell much better on 360? Those multo owners prefer 360?

So good to see House of the Dead do well, Headstrong deserves the sales. Hopefully the game will have some decent legs, and spawn some more hardcore lightgun shooters.

On the Wii Specific chart, Deadly Creatures moved up to 25 from 31.

Its great to see some Good 3rd Party Wii titles performing well. Hopefully MadWorld and Little Kings Story in March will continue that trend, and push some of the crap out...

Weird that they're the same rank this week as last week. Did they both just come back in stock after the Christmas rush or something?

Anyone have the H/W # for UK market ?

The last figures we have are for December

gameindustry.biz said:
The latest generation of home consoles - the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 - have a total installed base of 10 million units in the UK and Ireland.

That's according to data from GfK Chart Track, revealed today in a public trading update from retailer GAME, which shows that as of January 3 2009 the addition of 12 million PSP and DS consoles brings the total of all five machines to 22 million units in the region.

The PlayStation 3 sold 1 million units in 2008, putting the installed base at 1.9 million, while Microsoft's Xbox 360 now sits in 3.2 million homes in the UK, compared to 1.8 million in January 2008.

Nintendo's Wii is still the strongest of all home consoles, with an installed base of 4.9 million units by January 3, compared to 2 million last year.

The DS and DS Lite leads the handheld market, with an installed base of 8.8 million units, up from 5.4 million at the start of 2008, while Sony's PSP has hit 3.2 million units, compared to 2.6 million in 2008

GfK Chart Track has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz the data is correct.

This is GAF, once you are a GAFFER you can immediately rate games even if you have not played them and particularly if you don't have the system to play them on

Not really. I doubt I buy many more games this year because I'll still be playing SF4. And people were not shy about giving RE4, a January release, GOTY accolades in 2005. But I digress, this is a sales thread.

UK & Ireland 2008 Sales:

PS3 - 1M LTD - 1.9M
360 - 1.4M LTD - 3.2M
WII - 2.9M LTD - 4.9M
DS - 3.4M LTD - 8.8M
PSP - 600K LTD - 3.2M

Wii/DS sold twice the amount of PS3/360/PSP. A shame we didn't get PS2 numbers, I want to see how it's holding up.

Thanks. Seems that PSP H/W are the worst in 2008, not like Japan, where it is head to head with DSL. It is even worse compared to US, where it was outsold 1:2.5 (in UK, it is 1:5.6).

Not exactly. Only if you call a 1:2 (PSP 34k-DS 68k) ratio like last week and the week before in Japan head to head.

That depends on how you define "holding up". Total worldwide PS2 shipments was 2.52 million during October 1 - December 31 2008 (compared to 5.4 million the same period 2007) and while they haven't released region specific shipments in a while, the last time they did Europe accounted for ~40%. (Assuming the same ratio*, approximately 1 million PS2s were shipped to Europe during the last three months of 2008.)

(*Just to make sure USA or Japan didn't account for an unproportionally large part of the dropoff, I compared 2007's holiday numbers to 2008's for these regions in terms of their ratio of the total shipments and they were pretty much the same within a few %.)

I am talking about Japan's YTD 2008 # (the same # I talked about for UK), not Japan's Feb Week 4 2009.

Code:
NDS 4,177,267
PSP 3,850,175

Did you consider 4.17 Million vs 3.85 Million head to head ?

The whole of Europe must be alot more friendly to the PSP then just the UK. IIRC the ratio between DS and PSP was 1:2 or 1:3, nowhere close to the 1:5.6 we're seeing in the UK. That was just for Jan-Sep though, DS must have sold a shit ton in the holiday season (not that it's a surprise).

Looks like 2009 is PS2s final year. 9 Years old, not too shabby.

Quite surprising given the charts.
Why is it surprising, they're basically tied and none of the software really chart. PS3 gets a game or two now and then, but I doubt the 360 counterparts of those multiplatform games are far from the top 10 when the PS3 version actually charts. The 360 had a year headstart, so it's software isn't selling as well as the PS3 since their tie-ratio are very close. It's a lost opportunity for the PS3 to shine though, since France is heavily Wii slanted.

Ok thats it! What is wrong with this world!

Why is it "Iv" and not "IV" or "iv"? I see "Dawn of War Ii" also and thats just...

Is that really correct to do? Shouldn't annoy me so but it does. Is this some spellchecker thing since I see it everywhere.

SFIV is doing better on PS3 everywhere in the world, quite surprising, probably the first game ever where this is the case.

I wonder how well GTAIV: LatD did and how much it effected 360 purchases for the week. If it made some 360 owners hold back, we may see a Tomb Raider-like situation where the 360 version has longer legs in territories where it has a larger userbase.

Something is wrong with that chart. PSP is at 3.2m in UK alone and according to this PSP has sold ~4.5m in UK, France, Spain and Germany. Does October-December make up for the rest of the missing ~4.5m?

Yes, that chart shows 3:1 ratio for the first half, and a 4:1 second half. Not the 5:1 total we see in UK.

Well, to me it seems to go from slightly less than 4:1 in the first half (~150k/week for DS and ~40k/week for PSP) to slightly more in the second. (~175k/week vs. 40k/week.)
