The game that defined the survival horror genre when released on the original Playstation in 1996 is now more popular than ever, but it is the franchise’s debut on Microsoft’s format, which claims 55% of sales while PS3 accounts for 45%. ‘Resident Evil 5’ is the largest All Formats No1 since Call of Duty: World at War’s second week back in week 47 2008. It manages to surpass FIFA 09’s Christmas No1 week and represents 27.1% of all revenue from console games this week. In fact sales of Resident Evil 5 are slightly more than the combined sales of all the remaining All Formats Top 10 titles. As ‘Resident Evil 4’ had a staggered launch over 2 years across Gamecube, then PS2, then Wii and finally PC, it is hard to compare. However, RE5 on PS3 has outsold RE4’s PS2 launch week by 3.22 to 1. Last week’s No1 ‘Empire: Total War’ drops 7 places to No8 (sales down 70%), but Sega’s other Top 10 title ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games’ benefits from a retailer promotion, jumping 7 places to No10.

All other Top 10 titles lose sales, including ‘Wii Fit’ at No2 and Ubisoft’s ‘Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X.’ at No3, both up 1 place, but sales falling by 14% and 19% respectively. ‘Professor Layton’ makes the most of the downturn in recent releases such as ‘Killzone 2’ and ‘Halo Wars’, jumping 2 places to No4 despite a 20% drop in sales. ‘Killzone 2’ (-53%) slips 3 places to No5, staying ahead of last year’s blockbusters ‘FIFA 09’ (-12%) at No6 and ‘Call of Duty: World at War’ (-12%) at No7. ‘Halo Wars’ suffers a 60% drop in sales, but clings on to the All Formats Top 10 at No9, ahead of the next highest new entry this week, Sony’s PS3 ‘Socom: Confrontation’, new at No11.

Great showing for Resident Evil 5 :D

And yay for the House of the Dead! Climbs 4 places. And the UK's love for Sonic is unbelievable. The Black Knight debuts at 21.

I remeber there being some KZ2/Halo Wars fight in the last thread. Looking at those charts, Killzone 2 dropped less than Halo Wars.

Very happy to see Overkill go up four places. Shows it has some fighting left.

people sure love their franchises, i guess it is cool for hard core gamers...

I am very suprised with Socom debuting at #10. Very nice.

Last week Killzone dropped 58% and Halo Wars dropped 54%. Now we have Halo Wars drop 60% and Killzone drop 53%. The drop off is extremely close.

It moved up in the Wii Chart as well from #5 to #4 :D

Should clearly be on track to beat all previous light gun games on Wii (either this week or next will be the longest a light gun Wii game has ever remained in the Top 30)

At least decent for RE5, probably really good. Good game - hope it gets good sales.

Wonderful legs on the big boys, Layton and Wii Fit, making the Killzone/Halo Wars fight a little more pointless.

Heavy releases on PS360 continue to put a dent on Wii's domination of the charts positions. I don't foresee a recovery to before until big releases die down. A lack of weekly numbers, including for hardware, makes it annoying that we don't see how much the HD Twins affect Wii, and vice versa.

thanks for the laugh
good to see empire sticking around. with the long wait for that game, i had a feeling it would disappear once the 3 year backlog of pre-orders went out.

Nooooo Sackboy!

Anyway, Re5 opens good, KZ2 holds strong with 2 new hot debuts, and Layton goes up one, guess there was more supply.

SOCOM makes top 10 on individuals... Is that good? The game is universally meh, but the previous ones are good, so is it going on brand-recognition, or is the game okay?

Fingers crossed then. I'd like to see it stay in the charts for a little while longer. Going up four places and one on the Wii chart proves it at least has some legs, regardless of how long they last.

I hope MadWorld performs well too.

Layton sold 20% less despite its chart position, so I guess it's not about supply. Read the blurb, lots of info this time.

I guess SOCOM has been patched a lot since I last bothered to look into the official thread. Should be okay now.

We know Killzone did less than GT5P`s 108,000 launch week. We also know Halo Wars first week was 17.6% of Halo 3`s 466,000 launch week. Using those numbers and the drop off rates we can get close to the total units.

Best Case
KZ2 1st week 107k
KZ2 2nd week 45k
kZ2 3rd week 21k
Total: 173k

Worst Case
KZ2 1st week 90k
KZ2 2nd week 38k
KZ2 3rd week 18k
Total: 146k

Halo Wars we know was:
HW 1st week 80k
HW 2nd week 37k
HW 3rd week 15k
Total: 117k

Actually the thing in that chart that I'm most suprised about is that Persona 4 crept in. Hell yes to us we are finally getting a bit of variety in the top 40.

SOCOM was most played PSN game (according to last months PR) despite not being released in Europe until now.

It started at 10th place despite being available on PSN 4-5 months ago which Europeans can easily get (including myself), as well as now on PSN Europe. I think thats pretty impressive.

It is awesome game, very different from KZ2/COD4/5, and was right away, after patches it just got better.

4-5 million per year i think.... (World Wide). This years version was really good.

Probably a price drop made this happen or people wanted a headset for Killzone.
I bought it for the headset. Let's face it, with a metacritic in the 60s and most recently a 5 from Eurogamer it's certainly not worth buying for the game alone.

Nope. The EU retail release date for Socom: Confrontation was actually this past Friday. I was surprised to find out as well.

Good to see P4 chart, even if it should have been much higher. I'm pretty sure P3 never entered the top 40.

Now, go and tell all your friends about this awesome game, Europe!

I bought it, and I got the t-shirt, literally, got a Persona t-shirt in the mail today, 2 days after the game arrived.

Sega aren't half seeing some nice success on the Wii and PC, as damn well they should. Very few large publishers seem to understand just what it is that owners of those platforms actually want.
