Trion Worlds futuristic online open-world shooter ‘Defiance’ debuts strongly at No3 as the sixth event title launch of the year (released Tuesday 2nd April) and is the first Trion title to launch on console formats (360/PS3) alongside PC. The game is released in advance of the Syfy channel TV series, premiering on 16th April in the UK.

EA remain at No4 with ‘FIFA13’ (-15%), Nintendo stay at No5 with 3DS ‘Luigi’s Mansion 2’ (-46%) and Microsoft drop 3 places to No6 with Xbox 360 ‘Gears of War: Judgment’ (-67%). What came out last week that dipped in order for both console versions of Tomb Raider to rise?

Wow 360 has over half the top 40.

Is that not normal? They're by far the most successful here, Nintendo are pretty non existant these days bar the odd title, and there's not that many PC titles either.

Strange to see these reappearing. How many units do you need to sell to get to that level in the chart?

Why did Need for Speed 360 get a boost?
Good to see Tomb Raider rise slightly. Near the top where it belongs.
Lego Undercover. Hurt by minuscule install base.

I can't believe Defiance charted. That has to be a low number right? I had no idea this game existed until I saw it on Giant Bomb.

There has been lots of advertising for it. I have seen a load of Defiance ads and I hardly watch TV.

The charts are made of games that didn't sell amazingly well. Defiance has had a heavy UK TV marketing push at times, though.

I don't think I've seen any Defiance ads on TV at all. BUt then again the only thing I've watched is Sky Sports.

Nintendo are pretty non existant these days bar the odd title

The 3DS has been two years on the market and despite a number of Gaffers hailing Luigi there is no other 3DS title in the entire UK Top40.

What happened to this handheld and Nintendo's handheld dominance? Just for reference, the DS has sold a record 12 million + units in the UK.

Not a single "evergreen" title. No SM3D Land, no Mario Kart 7, no New Super Mario Bros 2.

I'm starting to question the long-term viability of this handheld here in the UK.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

Its pretty much a GBA situation in UK - DS was a change with many titles being in the charts and selling to the mainstream, but other than that handheld software sales were never that big to begin with. Big first party software releases will sell....anything else ? You better hope for france, germany and spain....

Even if I like handhelds and own them, I'd question the viability of handhelds outside Japan, never mind the UK.

I'd also argue that with the Wii and DS, Nintendo created a brand that correlated with each other. With the advent of smartphones and tablets, that majority of that audience has moved on. And while before their console and handheld helped each other, now they can longer pull the customer base from one to the other if they aren't on either platform in the first place

In mainland Europe the 3DS is outselling other consoles and doing DS numbers.

Really? Well if true that's a bit more promising. I'd hate it if handhelds died and we'd be left with touch interfaces. At that point portable gaming would be dead to me

Was Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge released last week?

It didn't even chart on PS3 Top 30 or Xbox 360 Top 40 software chart.

Man from what I've heard the 360 version of Defiance has major performance issues. Hopefully the Steam Sales eclipse that, not a good precedent to set!

The GBA also hiked up the price of handheld games from their Gameboy and Gameboy Color counterparts. Many GBA titles were also SNES ports and sold poorly due to also the high price.

I would argue a lot of handheld sales is predicated on price. You have to question why titles that have fairly mature design choices and a distinct lack of innovation should cost the extra price from the point of view of the consumer. Super Mario 3D land, NSMB2 and MK7, for example, are well worn franchises (not to say that they aren't excellent) and the latter only has 16 new tracks anyway. A drop in the price of software -- perhaps an MSRP of £30 -- would make software on the 3DS much more attractive to customers (the main demographic of which is much more price conscious) whilst still allowing Nintendo to remain profitable and keeping their handheld business relevant.

Is the DS also available to buy?

How many customers are buying a 3DS for DS games becasue the DS is EOL? Not that it matters to Nintendo I guess. A sale is a sale (except their profit margins are vastly superior on the DS).

Congratulations Nintendo on your extraordinary recent efforts to provide distribution in titles such as Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter and Lego City Stories.

Obviously they withhold supply to fuel demand. I mean why just use crazy conspiracy theories when they're doing well? It's been incompetence with the Wii and it's the same incompetence now, just this time they actually don't do well.

Comparing handheld and home console sales has always been dubious, imo, e.g. PS2 v. NDS in the best selling system of all time race (in that one is generally a single user item, while the other is often a single household item).

In any event these are really old consoles.

And it's not doing NDS numbers in Europe. Numbers like these would be NDS numbers:
