Week 4 sees 5 new games launching in to the Top 40, and the top 3 new titles were all launched on Tuesday 24th January.

Capcom take the first new No1 of the year with new release ‘Resident Evil 7: Biohazard' arriving on PC, Xbox One and PS4 (the 4th PSVR compatible box launch so far). ‘Resident Evil 7' is the 3rd best week 1 debut for the series (panel or total market units) - the week 1 record currently sits with 2009's ‘Resident Evil 5'. ‘Resident Evil 5' launched on 360/PS3 in week 11, 2009 and the highpoint was reached because this was also the first time the franchise launched on a Microsoft platform. Resident Evil is Capcom's most successful brand - in the UK (overall UK physical revenue since 1995 and up to 2016) it sits just outside the Top 30 all time brands since arrival in 1996, around the same revenue as Sony's ‘Crash Bandicoot' (also launched in 1996) and Ubisoft's ‘Just Dance' (2009 onwards).

Rockstar/Take 2's ‘Grand Theft Auto V' drops 1 place to No2 (+10%) and will have to wait for the right to join the elusive list of 4 games that have managed 12 weeks at No1 on the All Formats Top 40. The next 4 new releases within the Top 40 are all PS4 only – debuting at No3 is Square Enix's ‘Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter' and the last of the Tuesday releases is Sega's ‘Yakuza 0' arriving at No8. The fourth new release, launched on the more traditional Friday launch day is Bandai Namco's ‘Tales of Berseria' debuting at No14 and the final new entry is Bandai Namco's ‘Digimon World: Next Order', debuting at No24. Topping off a PS4-centric week, the 500GB Glacier White Edition Playstation 4 also arrived this week, accounting for around a quarter of all PS4's sold in week 4, 2017.

It looks like Tales of Berseria had the worst opening in the series for a mainline Tales of title starting from Tales of Graces f. Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter probably stole some audience.

Zesteria probably hurt Berseria quite a bit. I don't recall the exact launch numbers for Zesteria on Steam but Berseria's numbers on SteamSpy look much lower than Zesteria had at launch as well. Personally, I know quite a few people who decided not to buy Berseria due to their time with the former.

Fitting in my case. Combine that with the packed schedule and it's not that surprising.

DQ8 at no.2 in France is good news!

Nintendo and Sony domination in EU is impressive.

That's really not the case. Europe is Nintendo's weakest region by far.

Ouch. Poor Bamco.:(

How's gravity rush 2 as a game?

Or black female protagonist in a colourful world find it hard to draw audience?

Kingdom Hearts HD II.8 Final Chapter outsold Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

As for Yakuza 0, based on the PlayStation 4 version of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare we can guesstimate that it likely sold below 6,000 units. Niche sales but we couldn't realistically have hoped for much more, in fact I expected it to debut below Tales of Berseria so... baby steps!

Regardless of the sales, the game is an amazing sendoff if it is indeed the last entry for the series. People even occasionally joke that the game feels like it could be split into two games lol

Also you consider Kat to be black? Interesting, first time I've seen someone say that. Never really gave it much thought myself.

Niche game is super niche. It sucks but at least the creator is working on another game.

Yeah, Gravity Rush 2 was just never going to do well. I know people think Sony should have run ad campaigns for it and stuff, but it just wouldn't have been worth the investment because even then it still would have flopped.

I think fans should just be happy the game got made and that it's good. And like you say, it's great that Toyama is going to work on something new.

This 2 week seems rather packed for Japanese games fan though.

Kingdom Hearts, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Resident Evil 7, Digimon and Tales etc.

Stop buying FIFA.

As for Gravity Rush 2 bombing maybe it's also due to the price, for some reason this game is like over £40 everywhere not even just £40

RE7 is the third fastest-selling title in the franchise to-date (with Resident Evil 5 at No.1 and Resident Evil 6 at No.2). It may not sound that impressive, but considering the challenges facing the UK retail market, the numbers will come as a relief to Capcom. The overall sales actually sit right in the middle of our prediction last week, and its performance is strong when you consider that January isn't typically a good month for game sales. Also note, digital download numbers are not included in the charts data.

The truth is Resident Evil 7 next week could do anything from 50,000 to 120,000 units.

So about 85,000 units for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Gravity rush remaster was $30 and it didnt help, i think the gravity rush fans were going to buy 2 regardless of price and sony decided that its better to maximize profit from the little bit of fans they have rather than lower the price and try to get new people on board.

Kingdom Hearts, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, Resident Evil 7, Digimon and Tales etc.

Same thing seems to happen every year. Don't get why they stack on each other like this.

Really want ToB but I could barely slog through ToZ.

So with the splits we know

PS4: ~62,050 (73%)
XB1: ~21,250 (25%)
PC: ~1,700 (2%)

Massive gap between PS4 and XB1. Wonder what effect PSVR had on RE7.

Wow.... That's crazy not the split, but that means that every title sold less than 20000 and GRavity Rush still couldn't make it! dang!
So I guess yakuza sold somewhere in the 10,000 range

True that sounds like a good idea actually gotte recoup it's costs somehow

In a not so much surprising news, PS4 took January in the UK.

"We comfortably won the Black Friday period, and the Christmas Peak and January. So we're delighted with our sales. But it has been a fiercely competitive market."

2016 was a small drop from 2015 in the UK.

Also, fewer PlayStation 4 were sold in the UK last year than the year before - it was marginal, but there was a drop.

About PS4 Pro, Sony was surprised by the amount of new customers instead of existing users upgrading.

40% of PS4 Pro purchasers in the UK were new customers. Clearly the firm had expected the vast majority of buyers to be existing PS4 owners looking to upgrade, but that hasn't been entirely the case.

I would estimate PS4 being over 4M at this point, possibly at the end of 2016. Probably ~4.1M now.

Gravity Rush 2 looks like a huge bomba, at least on the European retail market. I don't remember any other title leaving the top 40 so soon and in a month with no several big AAA releases. I'm not interested in the game myself, but it's sad because it looks cute and the dev seems to have a loyal fanbase.

‘Resident Evil VII: Biohazard’ (-68%) lives on at No1 for a second week.

It will have to last another week at No1 if it wants to match the franchise’s longest run at the top (Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 5 both hung on for three weeks). ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ (-2%) is a non-mover at No2 while ‘FIFA 17’ ( -1%) climbs one place to No3, meaning new entry ‘Hitman: The Complete First Season’ released on Tuesday, has to settle for a debut at No4. It originally charted as a premium boxed digital collector’s edition just under a year ago, when it reached No29.
‘Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’ doesn’t move from its position at No5 despite sales climbing 4% in the wake of the release on Tuesday of its first DLC pack ‘Sabotage’. Also staying put is ‘Rocket League’ (+16%) at No6 and ‘Battlefield 1’ (-8%) at No7. Square-Enix now have 2 games in the Top 10 as ‘Final Fantasy XV’ (+19%) re-enters, up from No15 to No8 after a continued price promotion.

The Top 10 is rounded off by 2K/Take 2’s ‘WWE 2K17’ (-5%) and ‘Mafia III’ (-12%) both creeping back in, up from No12 to No9 and No11 to No10 respectively – giving the publisher three Top 10 games this week. The only other new entry to break in to Top 40 is Nintendo’s 3DS title ‘Poochy & Yoshi’s Woolly World’ at No20.
