After Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed’ franchise update last week comes Microsoft’s first full Halo release for Xbox One: ‘Halo 5: Guardians’ takes the top spot and outsells the week 1 for ‘AC: Syndicate’ by 50%.

This is also how much more Halo 5 sold in week 1 compared to last year’s ‘Halo: Master Chief Collection’ - up until now the only other Halo game available via retail for Xbox One owners. Ubisoft only drop to No2 with ‘Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’ (-39%) and EA drop 1 place to No3 with ‘FIFA 16’ (+25%). There are 2 more big new releases this week within the Top 5: debuting at No4 is 2K/Take 2’s ‘WWE 2K16’, outselling this-week-last-year’s week 1 on ‘WWE 2K15’ by 3 to 1 and coming in one place higher.

Debuting at No5 is Telltale’s ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ with the disc release including the first of 5 episodes. Activision’s ‘Guitar Hero Live’ drops 8 places to No11 (-39%) and the only other new release within the Top 40 are the next gen console versions of last year’s PC hit ‘Divinity: Original Sin’ – PS4/Xbox One versions from Focus/Koch Media are entitled ‘Divinity Original Sin: Enhanced Edition’ and debuts at No37.

From my perusal of the reviews, it sounds like the MP has a mostly positive response. SP is a mixed bag, some people like it, others think its the clear worst in the series.

Now, I think I understand the minimal sales PR for the game.

That's terrible for Halo 5, if I remember correctly Titanfall only sold slightly worse on a significantly smaller install base.

I expected 2+ million on NPD, now I'm not so sure.

Halo 5 sale might be a reaction to Halo 4 and MCC lacking. How is the fan reaction to 5? Maybe it will have a longer tail. Next weeks drop and the retail price development could tell us if the Halo brand is damaged long term.

Also does someone have the data to cross reference Xbox 360/One install base at the time of the release so we can calculate attach rate for the mainline titles?

I was of the thinking that a game like Halo would be a game not a lot of people would trade in and would therefore perhaps go digital with it, whereas something like AC is a single player heavy game with no multiplayer and therefore people would go retail to trade it back in?

How the hell can a numbered Halo game sell less than Halo ODST and Reach?

I think the FPS market has changed a lot since the last big Halo game and customers have a lot more options.

Also glad to see the Uncharted bundle still holding on so well. It's been in the top 10 since day 1 if I recall correctly.

Does not explain when you compare it to other retail launched of the same year.

It should not be an expectation for game franchises to sell more every year then when they sell less for everyone to declare digital download at fault.

With how high digital prices in europe are i can't see console digital be higher than 25-30% of retail sales.

For example there in germany console digital sales are 9% of retail sales (Site 17). I see this posted a lot on Gaf but console digital is really minimal.
