Heavenly Sword is, as you will soon discover, the very definition of a rental title. Clocking in at somewhere between five and six hours (depending on your appetite for overwrought cinemas) it's a decent game saddled by impossible expectations. It has silly ideas and grandeur in close proximity to one another.

It tries hard. And it's not bad, by any means. But it's not excellent, and perhaps unfairly it had this onus placed upon it. I've said that Lair is not the Playstation 3, and nor is Heavenly Sword, but taken together one must come to the unmistakable conclusion that the Playstation 3 is a game console and not the supernatural artifact they have presented it as. That however many processors and however many gigs of space are not especially relevant when put in the service of middling entertainment.

It has a decent combat system, and using this combat system you will progress from locked room to cramped, locked room until you come face to face with some jeering asshole. You might kill them either because of the jeering or because you think that death might cull their interminable monologues. There's a mean snake bitch and a pervert and an oaf. Oh! And en evil king. The only thing running through my head during the lavish and no doubt expensive mo-capped cutscenes was that these kings and bitches and so forth should form a band. It never seems to know if it wants to be a hilarious comic circus or a stark medieval saga. Play it, and you'll know what I mean.

There are successes, though: Kai, the mostly deranged sidekick, charms from the outset. Her feral animations and nuanced delivery really make her stand out against this batch of also-rans. Any object that can be thrown can also be thrown and then guided in slow motion, including corpses, which is something you must see to believe. We didn't even have a target; we would just throw bodies so that they flew like Superman head-first into gongs. This is something you can do for a half an hour - or more - without tiring of it. This guided firing is called "Aftertouch," and it's about fifty percent of the game. One wonders what the game's length would actually be if you didn't play half of it in slow-motion.

Some measure of your enjoyment will be bound up in whether or not you "buy" the story that they are telling. I've heard it described as epic, when it's pretty rudimentary fantasy-by-numbers bullshit, so who knows. It's all a matter of perspective: are we judging it against only PS3 games? If so, things are shaping up! If you own more than one console - or a personal computer - your standards for grand storytelling were recently adjusted upward.

The length of this game gets shorter and shorter as time goes by. First I heard it was around 10-12 hours.
Then it was 8, then 6, now it's 5 hours.
I'm hoping to have the game finished by the time I drive back from GameStop

There's a nuance to the post in the form of a link that's lost in the text above:

Having not played the game, the comic was still amusing. And Tycho's posts never fail to cut right through to the heart of the heated debates I see raging around us.

I would bold, but I'd just end up bolding the whole thing. I can't comment on the PS3 nor its games since I don't own them, but you can swap some terms out and it's still a crisp little STFU to tech spec war discussions.

I dunno what's up, they said they like Warhawk but only in passing.

But yeah, this seems like a rental.... still getting it though as I already have it preordered,

Took me five, almost on the dot. Maybe five hours and ten.

has everyone really forgotten the good old days when some games could be finished in 30 minutes, but you would play them again because it was fun? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

It's not really..that same point comes up in many of those discussions, but few disagree with the sentiment. That's not what's typically argued.

Most of my favorite games can be beaten in below 3 hours. :lol

Remember when you hit that pedestrian with your car at the crosswalk and then just drove away? Pepperidge Farm remembers. But Pepperidge farm ain't just gonna keep it to Pepperidge farms self free of charge. Maybe you go out and buy Heavenly Sword and play it over and over again, maybe this whole thing disappears

GAF's saved me a lot of money this weekend - I was after this and Super Paper Mario; now not so much.

Dunno about the gameplay length... if the five or whatever hours are extremely fun (doesn't entirely look like it, but let's assume it is) I could be convinced to buy a shorter game.

The costs to make a game have risen, so one way to keep them within reasonable bounds is to make the game shorter. It's a trade-off.

If the game looked like this and still cost that much I'd be pissed, though.

But then, I'm a wiitard and I will buy a 360 for Rez. I think my gaming tastes may be questionable.

It's no longer a predominant point, and the Wii/DS are as good an argument as any, but I still see it brought up, here and elsewhere. Regardless, I thought it was an entertaining newspost, per usual from Tycho.

Except that those are all average titles.

PS3 has lots of great games, but people tend to only focus on the negativity around the ones that are nothing special in the first place. Warhawk is better than all three of those, and I'm sure R&C will be too.

Nice how you jump to insults, very mature.

And your obvious biased is just as adorable.

No. No really.

Everyone knows there are a group of us who feel that bioshock was much too similar to SS2...

Grow up.

We have technical discussions because most people - IMO rightly - believe that a broader technical palette is better than a narrower one. That all else being equal, better technology is better. Not because anyone does or should believe that better technology will automatically make for better games, which is the sentiment expressed by PA. They're right, of course, but that better technology automatically makes for better games is not the motivation of technical discussion, and if raised, it probably would be quickly shot down.

Also, side point, but their point is proven again and again pretty much from day one of any technically progressive system. Don't have to wait for HS to see that. (I would guess, though, that its technical chops in terms of graphics and things like facial expressiveness etc. does elevate the experience over what it would otherwise have been, even if it doesn't suddenly make better overall than anything on a preceeding system..so technology can and does make a difference, but I guess it'll ideally do so in a context where everything else about the game is superlative also).

No, Lair and Heavenly Sword were hyped to the moon, which is why they're being trashed.

My Obvious Bias? yea because i have never said anything negative about the Xbox either eh?

A game decent game that is only 5 hours and barely any replayability is a rental. You dont need to troll PA or bioshock to push your agenda.
