People under 30 have way weaker grips than they did a few decades ago

If you get a weak handshake from a millennial, don’t blame him or her. It could be a generational thing.

Researchers from the Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina found that men and women under 30 have weaker grip strength than they did back in 1985. Their work was published (paywall) in the Journal of Hand Therapy.

The culprit? Probably a combination of increased technology use at home and at work, and less manual labor. “As a society, we’re no longer agricultural or manufacturing,” Elizabeth Fain, an occupational therapist and lead author of the study, told NPR. “What we’re doing more now is technology-related, especially for millennials.”

As someone with arthritic hands, I actively think less of people who put any importance in the strength of ones handshake. Especially if they go ahead and crunch my hand and then act all put off by my pained reaction.

It happens way too often. Fuck those cunts.

Handshakes are such an old person thing to do anyway, at least the bland firm business handshake types.

it's the gig economy. If I ever need a firm grip I'll just hire someone with one.

Who are you going to hire when you're hanging from a rail about to fall to your death?

Or maybe millennials are more polite than earlier generations and don't feel the need to alpha the fuck out of genial social customs.

I grab people by the crotch to exert my dominance so it doesn't take much strenth of grip as it is will power

GAF, the only place where every guy has a strong grip and dicks larger than 8 inches. There must be some kind of correlation there.

This is a rural vs suburban/urban work thing. People in cities aren't as strong as rural people either, and it's entirely due to the nature of the jobs.

I'm left handed, so I suck at giving handshakes with my right. It's not my fault, it's societies for discriminating against us lefties!

This is kind of funny. I was just thinking today about how weak some the handshakes I was making with others were, to the point where I felt I was cracking some folks' fingers. I'm left handed, so maybe I'm over-compensating, but usually I don't notice this as much.

A lot of them were definitely office worker types, not prone to physical labor, but many of them were higher-ups at a huge national retailer chain (and most were much older than me (mid-twenties)). Men/women both were disappointingly soft at it.

The most surprising, though, was a burly guy who was dropping off some power equipment for the company I work for-- he was a large man in his late 30s, and had grease/dirt all over him, yet when I shook his hand it felt like cupping a goddamn baby bird.

Nothing is worse than limp-wristed handshakes, though, or folks who just grasp at your fingers in a puerile, creepy fashion.

...I feel like I've put too much thought into this now.

Thankfully I've done my fair share of manual labor so I have a strong grip. Also I hate people who give weak ass handshakes. Put some effort into it or don't shake at all.

I don't like touching people's hands period, so I wish it wasn't such a common occurrence here (in the US). I have no problem exerting a strong grip because it's about first impressions but I do go right for the hand sanitizer as soon as the encounter is done.

Why do people even want to touch my hand so hard? Don't they know where it's been?
