Persona 5 Royal Review Thread

I enjoyed the base game enough that I'm willing to replay it again and also the reviewers who didn't finished the game, says "review in progress".

Similar to this.

Good to know about that.

I adore the game a lot too - the atmosphere, music etc, but the burnout is real in the endgame. The constant subpar banters and dialogues felt unnecessary at times and now they add more. Also I really didn't like the character interactions that much in this instalment, especially the main casts, and the journey through the ending, the ending itself..

I think they tried too hard to make it as edgy as possible lol, idk maybe I'll try to consider skipping the dialogues this time around.

Very much looking forward to it, but won't be paying full price for it as I already put like 200 hours in the first game and games are expensive over here. But I'll eventually play it!

Curious to see if there will be more mainstream media outlets that will review and bash it because ATLUS PROBLEMATIC

I'm there day 1, just as I was for Tokyo FE and will be there for the Xenoblade Chronicles remake. Jrpgs foe life!

On a side note: Cy Games, will you hury the fuck up and release GranBlue Fantasy Relink. Tired of waiting for news on it.

Okay, maybe there is a little hope for me.

I love P3 and P4 obsessively but wasn't even able to finish P5. Music, gameplay, dungeons, art... everything is much improved except the localization is bad. And that turned out to be a really big deal.

Here's some examples: personaproblems.com.

The experience was a harsh lesson for me. I wanted to love the P5 characters the way I love everyone from P3 and P4, and I did like them, but they didn't even really feel like people because of the garbage dialogue they kept spouting. It depressed me so much I dropped the game at the casino level. Whenever the subject of P5R comes up somewhere I ask if anything is being done to rewrite the script, and often people know nothing about it and don't even see why that would be necessary.

Well watching some of the reviews, I saw it mentioned that at least some improvements have been made to the translation, with examples.

Realistically, it's probably just changes to the most obviously broken dialogue. If they really went to the trouble of fixing the whole script and rerecording audio, wouldn't they be announcing that as one of the big improvements? But it's enough for me to give the game another chance. This time when I start P5, it won't be with 9 years of hype and expectations. Fingers crossed.

One of my favorite games but since I played it so much I don't feel like buying this edition.

Although I'm happy that it's doing well.

I haven't picked it up yet, but I have a phantom thieves edition preordered. I feel like I have to pick it up because it's a limited edition that people are already trying to resell for twice the price, but the game itself, I don't know if I care to get it right now. I'm more interested in playing RE3, and FF7 soon, and don't want to devote hours to this. I already played all of P5, and I have always been of the mind that it sucks compared to Persona 4. It's fine...but none of the characters are half as likable. Story always felt so juvenile to me also, because it was basically "adults bad". I probably would be down to play it again a lot more if it had gotten a Switch version, but nope...had to stick with this PS4 only bull shit. Pissed me off so much, because I have so much more time to play my Switch than PS4.

Its not compatible is it bud?

Cant help feeling this should be an upgrade dlc if you already own the base game.

The funny part is that ResetEra was still upset that Atlus didn't do enough with the Shinjuku duo.

Never listen to Era or people like them. Their goal was never to improve games, but to police content.

Yep, but then you have people who will come up with excuses to buy the game anyway. We have a number of them in this very thread. Some of them even decry censorship, but its okay as long as it is a game they really really really want.

Fucking hell, what ever happened to standing by your principles?

I have never played a Persona, and I know very little about the series. That said it gets enough acclaim that my interest is piqued. However my tolerance for the old-school, JRPG-style, grind of years past is basically non-existent. Is this game grind-heavy?

Well you do what you have to, it’s your money and your choice. I other hand don’t care enough for that scene to skip entire game for it.

Buy the game used. That is what I am going to do and many others. The Devs get no money from you and you can still enjoy the game, even with the absolute retardation of the agenda-driven localizers.

This was stated to you before. Then again:

Then buy the game used? 🤷‍♂️
Why?....I have been looking forward to this game I’m not going wait for sale or used copy over that scene I never cared for in the first place. Again if you feel that strongly about it then you do what have to.

Well isn't it the only way to address both concerns?

You want to play the game? Buying it used doesn't make that game worth less.
You don't want to award the censorship? The money spent on the used copy doesn't go to the developer/publisher.

Sorry that I don't want to set a precedent of developers cowtowing to crybullies and giving them the wrong impression that it's fine.

Currently I no longer have the luxury, most all gaming retail store in my area is closed down and I had no choice to go with digital copy and I think I have to do same with FFVIIRemake.

A lot of people here don’t seem to understand what actual censorship really is.

Producers realizing that they they didn’t do a great job on something and correcting in a later edition after listening to feedback isn’t censorship, it’s common sense and how good businesses operate.

If you’d really consider boycotting a game because a small cut scene was changed to be less offensive to LGQBT people, then you’re just as much of a partisan hack as the psychopaths who write for Kotaku.

It's not really correcting when the meaning and tone is not correct anymore (example: 5:35):

And because the translation used to be correct and then, changed to something that was incorrect, that is censorship.

I timed out about 70 hours in in the original game... a space temple if I remember correctly... yet I'm still thinking of picking this up... help?

I just got back from getting my Phantom Thieves Edition today, and I just opened it up. Damn I do admit this edition was worth the money. It's beautifully made, and super solid. So many other LEs for games (usually by western publishers) are made like shit, but there's a weight to all of this, and for $90, it was a bargain.

I platinumed OG P5, so I can't justify the full price entry fee for expansion level content. This will be a nice discount buy after I finish some other games for sure though.

Is it ok to be salty that I can't just purchase this as an expansion pack of the base game? I would happily drop $20-$30 on it, but I can't justify buying the game all over again. At least not until a deep sale.

And Makoto is the best you heathens.

Not sure whether to pick it up.

Loved the aesthetic of the game but dropped the original after 20 hours or so. The dungeons were just a bit of a drag. These scores feel like fan support. I understand people love Atlus, but I’m not seeing that much in the way of changes.

1.) You don't know what censorship is, so don't try to claim others don't.
2.) Pick up a dictionary and actually educate yourself. You can clearly use it here.
3.) The scene wasn't offensive unless you are an overly sensitive git who tries to find offense where none exists. It is clear you are part of that group.

It's quite rich that he thinks appealing to the sensibilities to a fringe minority at the cost of translation accuracy is not censorship. (And that fringe minority is still extremely unsatisfied with the result, making all of that labor meaningless).

Royal's combat change like technical attack is great, thanks to that I was able to reach the treasure room in 1st dungeon without breaks and l all my party members were low on SP.
