Peyton Manning is a pretty big piece of shit: A Shaun King expose for NY Daily News

The actual headline of the article is a little more diplomatic: "Peyton Manning's Squeaky-Clean Image was Built On Lies" is how that one goes. But it's hard to read through King's article and not come to the conclusion in the title. Although I'm sure someone will read through all that and figure a way to deny the premise.

Basically, post Super Bowl, when people were busy doing the A-B comparison between Peyton Manning and Cam Newton, and using the one to denigrate the other's moral standing, Shaun King made note of a sexual harassment claim that slid right off Peyton early in his career.

It was at that point a reader sent King a 74 page court document detailing the facts of said case, which goes for a very long time and makes very clear that Peyton Manning did some pretty fucked up things. Starting with:

On Feb. 29 of that year, (Dr. Jamie) Naughright, at that point the university's director of health and wellness, was in a training room, examining what she thought might be a possible stress fracture in Manning's foot. At 6 feet, 5 inches, his feet dangled off the edge of the table. Manning allegedly then proceeded to scoot down the training table while Naughright examined his foot. At that point, she said, he forcefully maneuvered his naked testicles and rectum directly on her face with his penis on top of her head. Shocked, disgusted, and offended, Naughright pushed Manning away, removing her head out from under him (see pages 14-15). Within hours, she reported the incident to the Sexual Assault Crisis Center in Knoxville (see page 18).

And then proceeding to:

Before she left, though, two staff members of the school, according to the documents, asked Naughright if she would consider blaming the entire incident not on Manning, but on another athlete — a black one. According to Naughright, the staff members (named as Mr. Wyant and Mr. Rollo), went so far as to actually name a specific black athlete she could blame it on. Of course, she refused (see pages 18-19).

In her remaining time at the university, Naughright testified that Manning, in her presence, on two separate occasions, deliberately reenacted the sexual assault on other student athletes to terrorize her. On another occasion he allegedly called her a "bitch" in front of other athletes after snatching a marker used to label drug-test specimens from her hand and throwing it across the room (see page 22).

This eventually forced Naughright to leave the university, only after signing a confidentiality agreement, which Manning then broke in a biography written with his father. Broke by lying, by the way, about what a vulgar, digusting person she was, which was a) a lie and b) a weird as fuck reason to justify disliking her:

Soon after the alleged sexual assault, records show that Manning told the school, "I have never approved of Jamie's vulgar language. It has always been my opinion, along with the majority of the team, that Jamie wants to be one of the guys."

To his father, he concocted far worse lies that were torn apart, one by one, when he and others were forced to testify under oath. He told his father, Archie, "she's kind of trashy," and "had the most vulgar mouth of any girl he'd ever seen" and "was unattractive but had big breasts" and had "been out with a bunch of black guys" and "had a toilet mouth."

Under oath, the ghostwriter, John Underwood revealed that Archie Manning suggested to him that Naughright was going into the dorms and having sex with large numbers of black student athletes. After saying that she was up in the dorms with black students, Archie, states:

"And, she'd, she'd, been up in the dorm before, I mean hey, you know, they could have, you know, could have pulled off stuff on her too. Ah, she, toilet mouth, ah Peyton told me he never did like her, but he always did, cause what I'd told him to do, ah, I instructed him to be nice to the tr- … don't ever look down on a trainer or an equipment person you know."

So basically, the Captain America of the NFL (King's comparison, not mine) is basically a misogynist racist sexual abuser who has no problems throwing women and black men under the bus for his own personal gain. But please, read the full story for all the context.

I never liked this fucking guy.

edit: Plasticine with the report from the AP at the time of the settlement:

Just to add some context, here's how the AP covered the settlement back in the day

Associated Press said:
Trainer's settlement involved more than Manning's mooning

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Trainer Jamie Whited's sexual harassment claims against the Tennessee men's athletic department didn't begin when quarterback Peyton Manning "mooned" her in the locker room.

Records released Tuesday by the university suggest Ms. Whited, 28, endured a long list of slights, affronts, embarrassments and, possibly, threats within the Volunteer athletic complex dating to 1990.

She reached a $300,000 settlement with the university last week and agreed to resign. UT announced the agreement late Friday without disclosing the extent of her complaints.

President Joe Johnson confirmed Tuesday the settlement will be paid with revenues from the athletic department, not taxpayer dollars.

A UT investigation conducted after Ms. Whited filed the complaint last year verified at least four of her 33 claims involving athletes, trainers, coaches and administrators. It noted athletes or trainers received some form of discipline in other cases.

But the report also contained some denials and memory lapses by Ms. Whited's colleagues and administrators. In those cases, investigators reached no conclusion and dismissed the claims as vague or too general.

Investigators concluded "both parties share responsibility for the current environment."

"Ms. Whited often sent mixed messages about matters complained of in her allegations in that she herself exhibited similar behavior or did not make clear that she found particular conduct to be offensive," the report said.

"Likewise, the Athletics Department administration could have avoided some problems by more clearly conveying to Ms. Whited the basis for actions she considered to be discriminatory."

People interviewed by investigators said Ms. Whited frequently used profanity in an effort, as one put it, "to prove that she was one of the boys."

Ms. Whited gave a different account in the complaint filed Aug. 27, 1996. She said sexual harassment allegations at UT "are treated as jokes and efforts are made to protect the student-athlete, and cover up the complaints."

Among Ms. Whited's complaints were that she was embarrassed by the nickname "Bumper," which she said athletes gave her because of her breast size.

She also said she was the subject of a song with sexual innuendo sung by the track team, had student trainers barge into a storage room where she changed clothes and received warnings that "other athletes were referring to me in a sexual manner and that I should be concerned for my safety."

But it was the incident involving Manning, considered among the favorites for the Heisman Trophy, that apparently was the final straw.

On Feb. 29, 1996, Manning exposed his buttocks as Ms. Whited bent over to examine his foot in a training room. Manning called it a prank intended for another athlete, apologized and was punished with extra running.

Ms. Whited cited the incident as the reason for taking a medical leave.

She was unavailable to comment Tuesday. A message on her home answering machine said she was grateful for the "opportunity for academic and professional achievement" at UT over the past 11 years.

"I will spend my educational leave expanding my research on health issues related to football student-athletes," she said.

Marilyn Hudson, her attorney, called it "an arduous ordeal. We are glad it is over with."

"It takes a lot for anybody to come forward," said Ms. Hudson, a specialist in sex discrimination cases, "and the larger and more influential the employer, the more courage and bravery it takes."

Some university officials were upset that Manning received the brunt of attention from the complaint. His father, former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, took it in stride.

"I know that around the country people kind of put their own headlines on stories," he said. "But that's just the way it is. I'd just like for it to die now. I believe it will."

It seems Peyton wasn't alone, but rather the whole culture of the UT sports department was toxic as hell.

Yeah, this stuff has been out there for awhile, King has just compiled it into a piece that covered most/all of the situation. I live in Denver, don't care about football, but Manning has always struck me as kind of a douchebag. Add to this the "investigators" he sent to Charlie Sly's house under the guise of being law enforcement in the HGH scandal, as well as directly contacting Sly's parents.

Yeah, in the end, none of this will tarnish his good ole' white boy veneer with the Bronco loving masses. He's their hero in the moment regardless.

I saw the story on my feed earlier. The comments section was... charming.

The thing that was new to me from the article was the info about the school staff members asking Naughright to blame the incident on one of the black athletes. It's really surprising how this part of Manning's past keeps getting ignored until he wins a championship twice in a couple decades.

Need to digest all this. I never tried to contrast Mannings public image with Newtons to try and shit on Cam , but I always thought Manning was an alright dude, HGH allegations notwithstanding.

Nothing about any of this is claiming to be "new" news.
That specific revelation about scapegoating black players is news to me and probably a whole lot of others.

PFT has an interesting post about it.

Before going any farther, it’s important to understand what the 74-page document is, and what it isn’t. The 74-page document is a piece of advocacy. The 74-page document is something that was written by the lawyers representing Jamie Ann Naughright in her defamation case against the Mannings. The 74-page document is, necessarily, one-sided.

The 74-page document is not objective. The 74-page document is not supposed to be objective. The 74-page document is not a court order or any other decision made by a neutral party. And, ultimately, the 74-page document is incomplete without comparing it to the corresponding “Facts of the Case” document submitted by the defendants in the case.

There’s another very important, and intriguing, way in which the 74-page document is incomplete. While it contains testimony and allegations about the “naked butt and rectum” escapade, Naughright’s lawyers redacted when filing the 74-page document large chunks of information regarding an earlier alleged incident from 1994. At page 10 of the 74-page document, the lawyers for Naughright explain that, because Peyton Manning’s lawyers had asked that “certain exhibits and deposition testimony relating to this 1994 incident be designated as part of the ‘confidential record’ and not publicly be revealed,” the information absent from the public document was filed “under seal,” meaning that only the presiding judge and the judge’s staff could see it.

This isn't a new story, it's followed him for most of his career.

However, it's probably telling that a disinterested observer is more likely to have heard the saga of Cam Newton and the stolen laptop than this.

AMazing how this shit been out in the opening and no one cares. But Cam can't dance though, but Peyton can have hired goons

But he can throw the football good, so it's okay.

That's sarcasm.

Seriously though, fuck people who put athletes on pedestals.

It's funny how Americans watch his commercials and buys that phony persona he created for himself. He's a scumbag, liar and cheater.

Somebody must really be trying to get one over on Peyton since this is the second time in weeks his name has been attached to controversy.

The indifference and defense of Manning by the general public is just indicative of a much bigger problem with celebrities and the rich in general who get away with horrible actions because of their fame and money. There won't be justice when it comes to these people as long as a majority of people keep thinking the the Mannings of the world are somehow above persecution or the law as a whole.

I've always gotten a strange vibe from the guy, wasn't there rumors/stories out there a few years ago about how he essentially had an open relationship with his wife and was big into having these huge orgies with her and others? Not that that is against the law but always struck me as weird if it was true considering his squeaky clean image.

Wasn't it two?

Anyway, Peyton is probably somewhere laughing it up, eating a chicken parm right now.

It's pretty dumb to wonder why Manning isn't being hauled over the coals for something that happened 20 years ago in college.

If people are still talking about Cam stealing laptops at the end of his career you might have a point.

It was awful and inexcusable, no doubt. But all of the evidence points to Manning having matured and conducting himself with class throughout his entire professional career. Something which can't really be said for Cam to this point.

It's always been there about manning that he's kind of a trashy dude.

It's always been kinda weird to me that he always got the "golden boy" type of attention over brady considering the latter has always been the more chill dude who puts the game and winning over any marketing deal or money. Sure, he's a republican, but no one's perfect :p

Who's waiting? The league aren't going to do shit with the amount of people on HGH, just like this it'll all be forgotten in a few weeks.

Ben will always be Rapelisburger to a portion of football fans, Jameis will always have the rape allegations hanging over his head, Cam will absolutely always be made fun of for the laptop incident. Ray Lewis will always be called a murderer. Craig James will always have killed a few hookers when he was at SMU.

Because it fits a narrative about him. Cams baggage is fucking childs play compared to these allegations though.

if peyton manning had stuck his nuts on some woman's face in the 24/7 media era he'd be subject to the same thing.

craig james meme aside, all those guys you mentioned got into trouble or were accused of something during a way different time.

imagine trying to cover something like that up now in the way they did then. holy shit he'd be done.

Maybe if he had really matured he would apologize to the woman whose life he screwed up.
