Pixel-Art in video games, not just some squares.

Any good 2D sprite Beat em Up games ala Streets of Rage?
If you want to play a pixel art game in that genre there isn't much tbh. Your best bet is to emulate all those classic Capcom and Konami ones.

Doesn't mean there aren't any, I briefly tried this one and it seems good. With a 93% user score on Steam.
I haven't played it, but Wayforward and Arc Systems sounds like a good combo and the art is legit. Sequel in development.
Lost Castle does no have the pixel art aesthetic, but I recommend it.

Paprium is one of the best Genesis game ever made.

Pre order the game.
It will help unlock a Pippin version. 🤡

Zelda 3 > BOTW
😎

The best ZELDA would be Link awakening with A link to the Past engine.

Decades ago, i loved Zelda 3's pixel art, i still prefer it to modern 3D Zelda but through time i discovered more appealing classic 2D like Lunar or even Marvelous on the Snes:

It's Zelda 3's engine by Aonuma mixed with Link Awakening, Lunar...
Sun, palm beach. 😍
On Super Famicom, you also have Gunple: Gunman's Proof that mimic Zelda 3 style.

Saw something fun while trawling WhatsOnSteam on Twitter.
The Steam release of DoDonPachi DaiOuJou DX, not the arcade, but the G-Mode version originally released on Japanese early 2000's mobile phones.

The publisher, G-MODE releases Switch and PC versions of these old games for preservation. So I applaud the effort, even if it looks janky as hell.
For more info, check out this DidYouKnowGaming? video on the topic.

About as much chance of Policenauts coming out on today's systems as there is of Metal Gear Solid 6 being a Switch exclusive..

Pixel art was only good for CRTs

This is a million times superior and the natural evolution of 2D graphics.

Some pixel art was definitely made with RF signal and CRT in mind. This was especially noticeable on Genesis, where palette limitations made it beneficial to think in terms of pixel bleed.

But it's far less true of arcade and PC stuff, which tended to show the crispy edges of pixel art the way it was.

Dragon's Trap remake is stunning, Ben Fiquet is very talented.

I second this.

I've also played it on and off briefly; Spurts of 10 minutes here and there. Looks pretty good, great soundtrack, and most of all has a retro/old school feeling with modern enhancements (faster movement, combat flows smoother, longer and better combos, etc).

Transiruby was just released on PC. I'll see what the user reviews say (if there are any glaring problems) before I bag it. Switch version TBA afaik.

Currently replaying Cave Story+ and I intend to finish it this time.

Well, this was weird. Nicalis just released a free Cave Story based game on Steam.
A teaser for another game in the series, or a gesture of goodwill in the spirit of the season?

It has been so long since i played this game but they keep releasing DLC for it so it is hard to hold back. Just to think about what Dead Cells was when it initially released and what it is now after all the effort Motion Twin have put into it makes me really happy. To everybody who haven't played this game, i just prey that you do so!

If you are looking for a good pixel art rpg, i am really enjoying this game “unsighted”

Also the music is fantastic in the game and really sets the tone, trailer doesn't do justice

I played it on early access or 1.0 release (I don't remember really). Felt very nice to play. Had pretty tight controls. But it also felt kinda small in scope and barebone in features. Art was very nice tho

Just finished Carrion on Playstation after they patched the gamebreaking bug i had right in the beginning.

Was a lot of fun to play as the "bad guy" and chew up humans. The game had a good sense of progression that really made you feel your getting stronger without losing its challenge. Would have been just half as good without the pixels.

The RPG Maker hater in me recognized that particular engine's stench right away.

There are good games using the engine, I guess. But too many of them use ready made sprite packs so they get a particular look and the stories are often self-insert porn.
To the Moon and Melty's Quest for example are very well liked.

Found two interesting games on WhatsOnSteam today. First is Quest of Graal, a local multiplayer running/racer game. Those are a hard skip for me, but it looks fine. The second was Beholgar, a sword and sorcery metroidvania. I actually bought it and gave it a whirl, but I can't really recommend it (yet).
You know the skeletons in Castlevania that throw bones? Imagine if they aim at you and throw in such weird angles it becomes difficult to approach 'em without getting hit. Jumping and hitting stuff cancels your momentum, getting hit in midair? Ditto!

Lots of annoyances that killed me over and over, driving me into a shield chewing viking rage. But... There's something there and it's fixable.

This is £4.99 on Xbox currently, is it worth buying? Am I correct in thinking it is a metroidvania?
Yes it is, a metroidvania.
Infuriatingly difficult, but it's great. Setting is unique with a weird Spanish catholic inspired universe filled with bloody penance and saints.

There is a demo available for Souldiers on Steam now. A Metroidvania coming to Switch & PC spring 2022.
I tried it and wrote my impression in the Next Fest thread. TLDR, art and gameplay blew my mind.

Tried injecting CRT Shaders and it looks even better. Accidentally set horizontal resolution to 436 instead of of 426, so there is a minor banding artifact.

Ganryu 2 was just released on PC, Playstation and Switch.
Made by Storybird Studio, a French developer with a decent track record of pixel art games. I somehow missed this one and interestingly it's a sequel to a 1999 VISCO NEOGEO arcade game.
