We've been learning a little bit more about Sony's next-gen PlayStation 5 thanks to a new report by Bloomberg, where the site reported that the manufacturing costs of the PlayStation 5 is sitting at around $450.

But in the report we also learn that Sony is putting some serious work into the cooling system for the PlayStation 5, with Bloomberg reporting Sony opted to "lavish more" on the cooling system to make sure "heat dissipation from the powerful chips housed inside the console isn't an issue".

Bloomberg wrote: "Most of the components for the console have been locked down, the people said, including the cooling system, which is unusually expensive at a few dollars per unit", adding that "typically, companies would spend less than a dollar" on the cooling system -- but Sony opted to "lavish more" on the PlayStation 5 cooling system.

I'm still expecting the PlayStation 5 to debut with the wicked V-shaped design, something that doesn't just look interesting but it'll be important for the cooling of the various chips inside of the PS5. Now the renders being leaked over the last few months are making more sense, given that a reputable site like Bloomberg is reporting that Sony chose to "lavish more" on the cooling system of the PS5.

Shoutout to cyber69 cyber69 for bringing this to our attention!

"Most of the components for the console have been locked down, the people said"

That effectively shuts down the Microsoft FUD that the PS5 was a 9.2 GPU where Sony scrambled at the last minute to up the clocks "to compete."

These things are locked in well in advance

You cant just up the clocks that much at the last second. It doesn't work like that. It would throw design and cooling solution off

It all has to be designed for well in advance to work in tandum

This article is several months old, which shows you the high clock speeds, with the advanced cooling solution, were already locked down and being done well in advance

PS5 GPU was always 10.3tflops with high clock speeds

But tflops arent all that important.

If you listened to what Cerny said, theres a reason why they went with such a high clock speed. It becomes obvious there was always a clear gameplan there. Theres a purpose to high clock speeds.

And its only variable to prevent loud noises or heating (which many have complained about with PS4 and PS4 pro. Notice how Cerny directly addressed that)

Mark Cerny is a modern day fucking genius of unheard of proportion

The full scope of what Cerny has actually accomplished wont be appreciated until you see it in action

But theres a reason why developers are calling the PS5 the greatest and most exciting hardware in 20 years

Theres a reason why developers are calling the PS5 the most innovative, forward-thinking, most revolutionary built gaming console ever created that they have ever seen

The tempest engine

The gemortry engine

The SSD

All cutting edge stuff leagues above any competitors

Plus there are many features that still haven't been disclosed yet which offer more advantages over the xbox1x

The PS5 is an insanely revolutionary console. Its much more forward thinking, much better designed, and much more balanced then the xbox1x

This is why people were telling you NOT to put so much stock into such a meaningless metric as tflops. Tflops is just a meaningless number that's used as fanboy marketing for microsoft. Dont fall for that narrative or FUD. Listen to what developers are actually saying

You can take this to the bank, the PS5 will be outperforming the xbox1x silly in real world benchmarks and performance.

The PS5 is truly a modern day marvel of engineering, design, and performance. Cerny is something else

I think Sony can leverage some of their power to get some better manufacturing deals.

A 400$ PS5 would be the absolute fucking deal of the century. I think that's what it will be. Just listen to Sony's messaging. They are very proce conscious. PS5 will repeat PS4 domination

If things don't work out as planned I can see PS5 at 425$ or 450$. Price is very important to Sony. They WILL 100% come in cheaper then xbox1x no matter what (while being the actual more powerful console in actual real world performance)

Oh christ, ANOTHER next gen thread.
How can a cooling be lavish? Make the contact area that touches the ihs of the cpu/gpu copper or flattened copper pipes, the main block is aluminum and heatpipes connect to that aluminum. Add a fan and that's it. Lavish as fuck.
We all know if the cooler was described as THICC you would be all over it.

The cooler in my PC is thicc 👀

Actually designing a cooling solutions for hardware is very complicated and requires lots of engineering and considerations for sizes, shapes, noise, airflow, environment...etc

Xbox One X was quiter than PRO despite being more powerful and they were roughly the same size. Kudos to MS engineers on that.

From the article it says lavish at a few dollars per unit

So it means lavish as smart or clever, not lavish as grossly expensive.

Move along, nothing to see here
Nice try omitting an important piece of information at the end of that sentence:
"adding that "typically, companies would spend less than a dollar" on the cooling system -- but Sony opted to "lavish more" on the PlayStation 5 cooling system."

Go find that sony patent, it shows cooling the front and back of the APU it appears or maybe I am looking at it wrong.....

If thats the case sounds interesting and very cost effective, waiting for the teardown to read more.

Makes all the concern for the cooling irrelevant if there is a new way of cooling, lets see.

Already so many bans :pie_thinking:

A lot of gamers criticized the Pro cooling system (I did not had one so I don’t know how it is in daily play) so I hope Sony come with something that surprise these gamers.

Now a few dollars per unit doesn’t seems that expensive at all.... I mean it is more expensive than a typical less than a dollar cooling system but it is not something g that will drive the final price up.

For example the APU costs can reach $50 difference between 350mm2 and 300mm2 that plays a way big role in the price of the machine.

BTW what “lavish more” exactly means?

Can we throw this guy's fanboy threads all into one thread please? He's pretty fucking annoying to be honest.
He is awesome and you are just jealous of his capabilities.

Even now that MS has the better specs, xbox fanboys are getting banned left and right. Lol
They seems to have the misconception that “power” allow them to offend others lol
It is happening a lot... sadly.

Honestly, I'm speaking as a human being to another human being. Your infatuation with PS5 is quite scary. Let it go pal. It's just a game console...
Funny how the person who liked this post is part of the most embarrassing forum when it comes to console wars.

The chip should cost quite a bit more.
On the other hand, their SSD could be cheaper.
Maybe $20 more for the GPU, and well worth it sounds like. The SSD might be cheaper to them but if you remember the costs of the 360 HD's a lot more to us.

Well, he doesn't even know that having the components locked doesn't prevent you from doing a desperate upclock at the last minute like Sony has done after seeing how much more powerful the XsX GPU is.

I'm sure the XsX still has room to put more power in their GPU too, but seeing the PS5 specs they just don't need it.

Who are you to say what I can and can not post about? You seem to think it's ok for xbots to shitpost, but that it's not ok to respond to any of it. Your agenda is transparent. Theres NOTHING "In good fun" about console warring. Then I guess, pointing out how xbox is the last place brand, is just more good fun. Why not? That's even actually funnier. The fact that Xbox always come in last place and yet fanboys call them "kings".....the "kings" of losing and always finishing in last place hahaha. All good fun and super hilarious
Sure you do.

Sure you will.

Sure you know.

because the series X is large af. Lol
And series X isn’t heavily overclocked that’s why.
And many Believe that ps5 will be rather small, that’s why.

but we will see, maybe Sony will show us the console

Sony could have known Microsoft went with 52CUs well in advance.
If anything, OC-ing into oblivion and spending a lot on cooling looks like last minute desperate measure.
didn’t Microsoft do the same with Xbox one? Upping the clock last minute?luckily the Xbox one was already larger than many VHS machines AND had an EXTERNAL power brick xD

It was due Activision forcing them not Sony.
Activision asked to MS for more power to get the CoD launch game at the framerate their target.
Even with MS engineers helping them they were not reaching there at 720p.
So MS upclock was enough to make CoD runs at 60fps.
Of course it helped others devs/games.

Also the controller is cheaper, I/O and Audio chip might be cheaper..we will see about the casing and other components.

But I assume XsX cost should set around $70 mainly due to bigger APU.

Wait til you see them sell it for $499 and say "HEY BUY OUR UNDERPOWERED CHEAP LOCKHART IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD THIS BEAST!" And ending up losing the console generation yet again.
I feel this too, and I'm scared about that. The guys at Playstation are passionate and educated about videogames, but they work directly under Sony's management, which , as every business, only cares about taking money, not delivering the goods. Losing Xbox might get them a bit "sleepy".
Anyway, next time, they should study more the history of every console launch, since they didn't try to create the perfect machine to be sold for gaming, they went instead for the most powerful. Just like Saturn, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox, Gamecube, PS3.... Let's hope they can make it work. Lockhart may not be so bad as the rumors say! I hope....

Probably around $550 I would assume.
That would be terryfying. But that may not be the case, read the response below, I dont' want to double type the same things :p

The chip should cost quite a bit more.

Yes, but not so much since they are using commonl SSDs chips, and connecting them to a special controller. But the cost shouldn't be that far, PS5 does have; lavish cooling, custom audio chip, custom I/O interface, better booth babes (joke).....

I don't care if the box is huge or expensive but I want it to be QUIET. If it's not quiet, I'm buying a Xbox this generation until Sony solves that issue.
I think DF already had a Xbox series X and played with it already and they said it has been very quiet all day.
Since Sony is spending a little more in the cooling and they already confirmed it’s gonna be not as loud as the pro, I think it’s safe to assume that it will be quiet.

To conclude
  • PS5 is the next PS3 with power of cell and Cerny is the next Kutaragi. Specs dont matter, unless they are told it matters by Cerny
  • It will cost 400 USD, but games will somehow look better on PS5 than XSX. Ahh, the magic of Secret Sauce.
  • PS5 will be cheaper and more powerful than XSX because GAF wishes so, just like they wished for PS5 to be 13 TF.
  • Tempest Engine is better because of Cerny's half an hour ASMR not because they didnt want to spend money licensing Dolby Atmos. It will better even though Xbox did Spatial Audio last gen in Xbox One X and even had Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, now they have a dedicated audio chip for Spatial Audio in Series X along with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Windows Sonic. Not to mention Microsoft has been working on Project Acoustics and Audio Ray Tracing since 2012(a topic Cerny lightly brushed aside in his Wired interview and ASMR reveal video).
Never fail me GAF. You are amazing when drunk.

Since, everyone is posting 'real devs'
Here is the opinion of an Ex-Guerrilla Games Dev with no connection to Xbox
And
So, far what I have gathered on what devs think of Xbox Series X
Joel Baker, Technical Director at Hinterland Games
Ray-Tracing is one of the most potent features, with big benefits for weather effects and immersion on the horizon. NVMe SSD tech and the custom hardware surrounding it to help get data into memory faster.
Gennadiy Korol, Director of Technology at Moon Studios
Playing games at a high refresh rate, at those crazy resolutions, is the next big thing in gaming.
Kevin Floyer-Lea, Chief Technology Officer at Rebellion
Excited to be able to hit 4K 60 FPS as standard. Hardware-accelerated ray tracing is also a very welcome feature. SSD storage takes beautiful realistic environments and make them load in a flash
Mike Rayner, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition
SSD speeds improve load times without any code changes. DirectStorage APIs and hardware decompression on the Xbox Series X are also key factors in further improving loading speeds. Sampler Feedback tech, which is part of the Xbox Velocity Architecture, loads textures more efficiently based on what the scene needs, further reducing the load on memory.
Alexandre Sabourin, Team Lead at Snowed In Studios
Hardware-accelerated ray-tracing, improved processing power, and SSD boosts will help the Xbox Series X.
Grant Kot, working on a Real-Time Particle Physics based game for Xbox Series X and high end PC's
Xbox Series X is more powerful than his 8700K RTX 2080 PC.
Richard Geldreich, worked at Space X, Valve and Ensemble
Xbox Series X's BCPack Compression technique is better than PS5's Kraken
Louise Kirby, Developer of Void2D and Void3D game engines for Xbox Series X, Windows 10 and Nintendo Switch
A series of tweets talking about Xbox Series X tech
Chris Grannel, ex-Sony first party dev who worked on Formula One Series, Wipeout HD:Fury and Killzone 2 for Playstation.
Xbox Series X caught Sony off-guard. Microsoft has been working a little bit closer with AMD on some of the technologies that they have been working on. Xbox Series X can do better real time Ray Tracing because of the higher 52 CU count compared to Playstation 5's 36. Microsoft has got some pluses like Xbox Series X's 320 bus compared to Playstation 5's 256 bus. As a developer he would rather work on fixed performance deltas.
