7/10

But as a serious fighting game Battle Royale is, like its inspiration, too scrappy, too random and too unfocused to warrant the accolade. Meanwhile, as a celebration of lineage, the game boasts far fewer extras than 2008's comprehensive expression of the fan service fighter, Super Smash Bros. Brawl - and, perhaps, Sony lacks the lineage for a celebration on this scale. An enjoyable, workable clone then - and a surprisingly un-cynical one - but lacking the raw ingredients to truly replicate Nintendo's success in this niche.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale isn’t perfect, and it clearly owes its existence to something very special that came before it. But it’s also special in its own right. PlayStation fans have long had to deal with unfair comparisons to Smash Bros. while eagerly awaiting this game, but the wait is over, and now you can see for yourself that the two games are as different as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

PlayStation has a proud, nearly two-decade-long legacy, and All-Stars celebrates it. It combines characters, environments and ideas into a tight package that’s worthy of consideration for anyone who owns a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita and considers themselves a brand loyalist or simply a longtime fan. The fact that the experience is identical on both platforms, that you’ll receive both versions for the price of one, and that progress can be shared between PS3 and Vita to make one ubiquitous ecosystem is hopefully a sign of what’s to come with PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and beyond (even if the game is certainly more at home on PS3).

I know it’ll be hard for some skeptics to believe, but PlayStation All-Stars is its own game, and it even happens to do some things better than what inspired it. Give it a try and see for yourself.

Good verdict ign.

Sounds good to me, the core game sounds like a great time, but the extras and presentation of it all are a bit disappointing. Would have loved some weird PS1 adverts and stuff. Maybe next time if this is a success :)

In before the storm arrives.

Legions of fanboys are now lurking this thread.

But reviews don't matter if you love (or hate) a game.

Kind of funny seeing the comments on the IGN article.

People disappointed in the game getting an 8.

Crazy.
And that is why, it's getting crazier each time. In 5 years 9/10 will mean a bad game.

Really, IGN gave it an 8? I was honestly expecting a 10 from them. They've been hyping this game beyond belief. At one point they were uploading three All-Stars videos every day to their Youtube channel, and they would talk about the game on all of their shows (Daily Fix, Up at noon, Gamescoop and so forth).

Personally I didn't like it much when I tried the beta. I'll probably buy it when it's cheap.

EDIT: Holy shit I just F5'ed Youtube. IGN just uploaded 20 Playstation All-Stars videos. They're obsessed with this game O_O

Crazy.

I was expecting a 9 from them from how they worded the review. Just by looking at the verdict alone made me think that.

8/10 is still good.

And I still prefer the playstyle of this over brawl.

I cant give a review on this yet, but I expect these reviews are basing this more along the lines of the content. It should have been more.

I guess consensus will be: Combat is fun. Presentation, Playstation legacy use and extras are lacking.

That's what it has always looked to me from videos.

Elsewhere, Sony's in-house creations fill in the blanks, including the iconic Rodney Greenblat-designed PaRappa the Rapper and Sony's Japanese mascot Toro Inoue (from the Together Everywhere! series). These are joined by Sackboy, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, Ape Escape's Spike and MediEvil's Sir Daniel Fortescue. The strongest characters tend to be the more cartoonish creations, as they allow for the most outrageous, fantastical moves; more lifelike options such as Nathan Drake (Uncharted), Emmet Garves[sic] (Starhawk) and Cole MacGrath (in both his good and evil incarnations from inFamous) fall somewhat flat..

Am I missing something here? Has any Emmett footage been shown?

A solid first entry if not spectacular.

I doubt any competing fighter will challenge the netcode & crossplatform Online play anytime soon. 60FPS both on PS3 & Vita.

My buddy is begging me to pick up thig game since he had so much fun with it last night... I'm not sold yet, but those are pretty positive reviews so far. I may just buy it to play the VITA version.

I think there is enough stuff in their they are just not doing enough with it. I have to read a few score, but I am sure they will knock the arcade mode. Which I think is fine for a game like Street fighter but let's be honest here, Smash Bros set a different standard.

Day One Review Justified =D
I was still getting it regardless of reviews but it's good to see the sentiment of it not being Smash is great.

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
That's pretty cool that one guy can use the Vita as a controller and another use the Dualshock.

IN YOUR FACE WII U.

...though having two separate screens for a game like this doesn't really benefit anyone. :p

Sounds decent.
As ever with a Sony release am only surprised its out.

Eurogamer are a bit negative just because they don't think Sony have the background for this kind of game; got to wonder if it'd do better as just a fighting game with a range of fun characters (hell I suspect it might sell better).

IGN's:
PlayStation has a proud, nearly two-decade-long legacy, and All-Stars celebrates it. I hate this sort of fanboyism. All Stars is celebrating two decades of Sony with the last 6 years?
Is there any Vita characters even on there?

As someone who loved Sony's systems before PS3; its not a celebration of two decades. Its an end of a generation party.
Nothing wrong with that; but lets not play that old 'Sony <3 special fans' card. Its always been pathetic; and I don't know why so many are happy to suck up to it. The two-decade legacy is heavily third party until this gen; this is a new Sony in a multiplat world.

Hope people enjoy the game.
Maybe if Sony wins me over with PS4 (they just have to meet MS but with no Live charge basically); I'll see you guys for the party at the end of that gen.

EDIT: At OP; maybe differentiate between PS3/Vita.

Not sure why they stuck with the supers being the only kill method, it just doesn't seem fun or rewarding.
