Update at 5:10 p.m., Oct. 15, by Tristan Hallman: The man has been identified as Bobby Gerald Bennett, 52.

When an officer arrived, Bennett was sitting in “a black swivel office chair in the middle of the cul de sac with his arms crossed,” police said in an arrest warrant affidavit.

The officers asked Bennett to show his hands, but he allegedly told them “you all are going to need more officers out here.”

Bennett began walking toward officers with the knife raised, police said. One of the officers on the scene fired four times, striking Bennett once.

Police said Bennett’s mother told them he had been off his antipsychotic medications for several months.

Bennett was arrested and faces an aggravated assault to a public servant charge. His bond hasn’t been set.

Bennett’s criminal past in Dallas County includes DWI and theft convictions.

Original post, Oct. 14: Dallas police are investigating a Monday officer-involved shooting in Rylie with a man police described as being mentally ill.

Police responded to a call around noon in the 9400 block of Crimson Court about a man standing in the cul-de-sac holding a knife who stated he wanted officers to shoot him.

When police arrived, he was still holding the knife. Warren Mitchell, a Dallas Police Department spokesman, said officers told the man to drop the knife, but he indicated that he would not cooperate.

Mitchell said the incident escalated and an officer shot the man. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas where he’s in stable condition.

The incident is under investigation.

I can't dispute what the guy may or may not have said, but it damn sure doesn't look like he was walking towards anyone

Too much police state. They are ready and willing to kill you. No room for error on our part.

I've been thinking, we need more cameras for average citizens. I hope we get to the point where every citizen has a camera/dash cam in there car. I've never had a terrible police interaction but these things are hard to ignore. I have a cousin with schizophrenia and this could easily be him.

Well does it need to be said I hate cops, could someone give me a nice "fuck the police" gif I can refer to in these situations, would be nice.

He's coming right for us!

What I don't get is, even if he DID come at them with a knife... 4 times. They shot him FOUR times, for a knife? How does every over police officer in the world without a gun manage to survive all these knife attacks?

Aren't all the American police issued with stun guns as well now, not that it was required but just taking away all the excuses they had to 'justify' this. Senior officers will no doubt support this psycho with a gun, as will politicians completely ignore the problem.

Don't call cops on your family unless you want them dead. Oh and if you get agitated yourself be ready for prison. They aren't around to serve and protect, they're around to bully, kill, get promoted, and retire in twenty years with a 100k pension. They are uneducated as a requirement and they give zero fucks about you.

Unless you are in mortal danger, do not call the cops.

And always have a CCTV and a dashcam when these thugs are around.

damn, if i ever ever come to the US, I'll make sure to only walk around in a suit and tie and never get in a car. i swear, I'd feel safer being robbed at gunpoint by some thug then to get in a traffic stop with one of your gung-ho American sheriffs.

again: put cameras on each and every one and that still won't be enough

Yep, pretty much. Otherwise they'll lie and say whatever they want. Dashcam IMO is essential on the road, in case you get pulled over and they say you did something that you didn't.

Police need to wear cameras on their uniform while on duty.

Thankfully the usual terrible police marksmanship means this guy was only wounded, not killed. 1 shot out of 4 hitting someone at that range? Not moving?

It seems like we have one of these threads every other day, it's crazy to think about the number of incidents that DON'T get captured on video... and the massive number that must not have been recorded back when devices like camera phones didn't exist.

This has been shown to be hugely effective at curtailing bad behavior, actually.

Be angry at the police that shot the man in this video. You should and have every right though, but how about stopping with the bullshit generalizations...

I've read that and completely agree. Every police officer should have a video recording on them at all times to record when engaging in any activity with a civilian. Helps both the civilian and the officer.

What the officers did in this situation was uncalled for, as he was not moving. They should have tried to talk him down...

... that being said when an officer's life is (legitimately) on the line, or anybody in any situation, shooting multiple times is prudent. When your life is threatened you do not take unnecessary risks. You shoot to -stop-. You can never accurately determine how many shots it would take to stop a target, nor can any but the most talented marksman know for a fact they can put a single shot on perfectly on target. So firing off several shots, as long as your grouping is solid and you are mindful of your surroundings is usually the most prudent course of action. When it becomes a problem is when you have situations like the two cops panic shooting at a guy less than 20 feet away 17 times (!) and only hitting him once or twice in the leg.

Not stun guns. Tasers.

Stun guns work on pain compliance. Tasers actually scramble your central nervous system so you can't control your muscles or coordinate your movements at all (oh, and the pain is worse than stun guns, too, and all-encompassing, rather than localized to the spot you're tased in.)

No one cheers when anyone else does their job correctly, and there sure as shit isn't nearly the same level of corruption and cover up involved as there are for police.

Only reason this is on the news is because there's video proof. Imagine how often this kind of stuff goes unreported.

Oh please, spare us of that passive-aggresive crap, people have no problem praising cops that do the right thing and beyond here, but they are correct to point out that the good cop's silence make them as rotten as the other ones.

yeah totes, this is all clearly juste a bunch of 2 3dgy 4 u teenage anarchists who like to overinflate a bunch of isolated incidents.
These reports of police officers doing what it is that they are fucking paid to do obviously prove that there isn't a problem with police brutality in the US

Police are a cheap assassination service. Want to get rid of your partner? just phone the police tell them he's acting aggressively and they'll be over promptly to shoot the person.

I have no problem agreeing that what happened here is wrong, the rampant generalizations about all police being maniacs that are out to get us is what irks me. Given that the same silly shit is posted in every cop related thread, even when there is no evidence of wrongdoing unlike what we have here, I don't feel bad about being a little passive-aggressive.

Hey guys I worked competently and didn't kill anyone at my job today, someone make a thread about it so I can get the praise I deserve. We should be focusing on how I am the true hero here.

Lol, holy shit, this is so ridiculous. I'm done going in cop threads. Bunch of people trying to be edgy and spewing hyperbole like this everywhere every single time. Fuckinf stupid.

No, the point was that we don't need to have a tin foil hat attitude about our police force, as seen in the posts he was responding to. Hold the responsible parties accountable, but don't condemn everyone who works the job.

Have you ever seen how cop threads go here? Literally every single one. This will never happen. For some reason, there's a deep-seated hate of cops here. One officer does something? Fuck all police! They're pigs!

I don't get it. Gaf is usually a bit better with using the brain.

If this incident had not been recorded do you think anyone would know of this officer's wrong doing?

Do "good" officers cover up for officers who routinely break the law or abuse citizens?

If a "good" cop covers for a bad cop is the cop still a good cop?

America, and well, most countries have a problem with the police. But only a certain population has to deal with this problem, so yes, if its not bugging certain people, great, they are in the clear! But you can't discount a large number of people experiencing problems with law enforcement in this country. Just for the sake of yourselves when push comes to shove, the rights they are eroding are your rights as well, They just aren't arresting you for looking mexican, or black, at the moment. People aren't making up police abuse, nor are they making up a fear of police response, nor are they seeing police being punished for their actions.

Tad bit dishonest.

There are deep-seated, statistically quantifiable problems with the police in this country. The vitriol for police wasn't spontaneously generated, it came from somewhere.

Of course there are. I'm not saying otherwise. I'm saying that the ridiculous hyperbole posts like the one I quoted earlier in the topic are entirely ridiculous and unnecessary. You can't blanket an entire field of people in the profession as assholes because of the actions of corrupt or idiot officers.

alright, I'm gonna give you the benefit of a doubt and bite: what is being claimed here is not that every cop is anything, but that the institution that is the police force in the United States is thoroughly corrupt and dwells in omertà and other Mafia-like behaviours.

The fault of the majority of police officers is not that they abuse their power, but that they fail to do their duty when it comes to punishing and/or even acknowledging the misdeeds of their colleagues.

That is why i say "fuck the police" and not just "fuck corrupt police officers", because the ones who don't behave like criminals still have to account for looking the other way when they see the ones who do .
