Some officials have also been mocking the regular meetings of the senior advisers at the White House to discuss what's going on at their agencies and how they can advance Trump's agenda, calling these meetings brainstorming sessions for suck-ups.

”It's like a roomful of Jonahs from ‘Veep,'" one administration official said.

Obamacare was really such a well crafted bill at its fundamentals. It's why GOP is really struggling with this repeal effort.

I think they were also counting on a little more blind/uninformed support from the dumbasses in their base. They've been shouting about repealing Obamacare for years and the base has been cheering them along the whole way. But when it finally came time for the rubber to meet the road, the base must have had a moment of lucidity and realized that repealing the ACA would impact them directly, and their unwavering support wavered.

Of course it's also possible that the base believed Republicans when they said "repeal and replace with something that will magically cover more things for way less money." When they saw that what the Republicans actually came up with was Jack and Shit, everything started to fall apart.

This is what happens when you rely on a coalition of idiots. You can get them to vote against their own interests for a while, but it won't reliably work forever.

*Note of course I'm not saying all Republicans are idiots, but I think we have objective evidence that the party has a large idiot contingent by the fact that a racist sex offender reality TV star ran away with the party's presidential nomination.

There's also always a risk in passing legislation that directly affects people rather than something they'll never personally see the effects of anyway.

A lot of their base didn't realize that Obamacare was the ACA. Seriously, go back and look at some of the interviews over the years. "I hate Obamacare but love the ACA" was a fairly common refrain. In giving the ACA a nickname they also obscured exactly what it is they were doing in the eyes of their supporters. It wouldn't shock me if most of the people who wanted Obamacare gone had no idea what it was exactly.

During his 2020 run, will he still be rattling off about building the wall and repealing Obamacare?

Only if there's time after the section about his historic 2016 electoral college victory.

Yep. Same deal when they were surveyed about the Syria missle strikes. Democrats: 38% support Obama doing it, 37% support Trump doing it. Republicans? Something like 18% supported Obama doing it, and now 82% support Trump. It's mind-boggling how so many Republicans are just plain stupid.

Trump is clearly frustrated that media aren't playing spending deal as a W-I-N -- and by continued woes in House to whip healthcare votes.

The most interesting thing to me is that come 2020, Trump will actually have a political history to reference. Whereas in 2016 he could promise to be an advocate of whatever the fuck he wanted... gay rights, universal healthcare, workers rights, etc and no one could refute him. He can still do that, but now there will be receipts to pull up on his ass that didn't exist before for the media.

It's gonna be something interesting since his populist brand was bolstered in part by those pie in the sky promises that he could get away with by being an unknown quantity.

Passing any healthcare overhaul is tough. Obama barely managed it, and that was with big compromises and leftover issues (and as we see now, some lagging effects).

I'm not surprised at all that the GOP can't do it. I'm surprised that they can even get close.

Not even getting it out of the House is Not close.

Especially when it hasn't even gone to VOTE in the House.

That's how bad it is.

Yeah, I mean I'm surprised that they are close to a maybe getting it out of the House.

They're great at messaging the anti-Left stuff, and terrible at actually messaging for a positive thing. Unless they could come up with a compelling thing to vote *for*, some sizzle (debt reduction, relieving the burden on individuals or companies) they have nothing. So I'm surprised that they are even close to a 50/50 House vote.

It's easy to be the party of No when you don't actually have to do anything

What's kind of funny is that the Democrats haven't even been given a chance to be the obstructionists lol.

Democrats can do whatever they want in the fall and have proof the president ordered a shutdown. Amazing.

Pressed by @rushlimbaugh on failure to get slew of Trump priorities in budget, Pence touts defense & border security spending increase

Defense increases were going to happen under any President. Maybe border security ones wouldn't have but it's a drop in the bucket.
