Polygon/Verge writer says Naughty Dog staff said inappropriate things to her (quote)

I wouldn't be shocked to hear that actually there are other companies and websites that have these dirt bags in their groups though,

unfortunately I feel there will be a shower of these events coming soon, makes me feel sick.

Unfortunately, it became sort of like a standard way of talking to women for most (mostly younger men) men. Sometimes when waiting in line at the gym I can hear how the guy in front of me talks to the (quite cute and beautiful) on the other side of the counter just makes me sick and all she can do is smile and act unaffected while clearly she's being talked to in way as if she was an object. It's like a grotesque flirting of sorts. And many times I feel like I'm the outsider, not these guys.

Unfortunately, no one really cares about sexual harassment. It's common, happens in all work spaces and isn't going away.

Which is exactly why we need to bring it up when it happens, discuss it, shame people who commit sexual harassment, and change the conversation.

The status quo isn't a good excuse. Time to change the culture, and if people go down because of it then so be it. They dug their own grave, frankly.

Wish we had a name. In a team environments, one moron running his mouth is going to affect several hundred other developers there. This is disappointing... But sadly not uncommon.

I think its pretty twisted and evil that that's how things are now.

The law is there to protect but a lot of this is either ridiculously hard to prosecute because unless you're constantly recording, which is illegal it's hard to get solid proof

Was this just at the start of the meeting or did it continue the whole way through? Was she a professional and just moved on or ignored it? Did she make a witty comeback?

And if she did get seriously insulted, did she make a formal complaint to the person's superior or the company? Is legal action on the way?

What answers do you expect to any of these questions that would make the situation OK?

Is there any proof?

Of a random verbal comment? You tell me the odds.
Stop what? Asking relevent questions?

There exists no universe where any of your questions are anything resembling "relevant".

Unfortunately, no one really cares about sexual harassment. It's common, happens in all work spaces and isn't going away.

Prefacing a shitty "status quo" justification with "unfortunately" doesn't make it any less shitty.

Worst thing is that this can't have happened long ago, as House of Cards is only a few years old (I'm assuming he was referencing the US series).

Expected junior or alt account, found active years long account. Huh.

Probably thought they had already switched to their alt, found out they hard way they forgot.

It's heartbreaking that women have to deal with this shit daily. It's just not ok in any context.

So is the company guilty of sexual harassment or are the individuals working for Naughty Dog guilty of sexual harassment?

Naughty Dog/Sony could be guilty of not having policies in place against sexual harassment or covering up for known cases of sexual harassment but anyone making individuals working for Naughty Dog = entire Naughty Dog should be ashamed of yourselves.

But let's not get that far, if you are really trying to imply individual actions working for a company = entire company, then you must be really feel guilty unless you are complete incoherent because a former NeoGAF mod was arrested for child porn, so for the same logic since you are part of NeoGAF as well it makes everyone doing this silly equivalence guilty as well. I hope you are satisfied.

Representatives of a company in a professional situation are that company. When you get bad service, you don't say Bob owes you compensation, you say Amazon owes you compensation. Yes, it's about Naughty Dog.

Edit: crap, didn't mean to double post ;(

Remind me to never work with you.

Don't work with me.

That wasn't an excuse, that was me speaking from experience. I'd love nothing more than to not have to worry about this at the work place, but for my entire adult life I've realized no one cares if someone sexually harasses you.

Prefacing a shitty "status quo" justification with "unfortunately" doesn't make it any less shitty.

No, it makes it unfortunate. It's still very very shitty and I wish the culture was different. Try to take up a sexual harassment claim with HR and see what happens...Unfortunate was just the tamest word I could use to describe how I feel about the outcome of situations like this.

I'm also not sure why people took my comment as a defense against this. Unfortunate means not good.

Legally speaking, this is a huge risk she's taking here by speaking up. It's insanely difficult to prove statements like these and it could open her up to a libel suit if a person is identified. All the more reason to believe her.

Man, not only was that a grotestque comment to make out the gate (since she explicitly said it happened when she was introduced) but he did it while talking to a reporter!!! That tells you how insideous this behavor is.

In HoC, a young reporter enters a sexual relationship with a politician that is [initially] mutually beneficial to both of them. He feeds her stories so she can get ahead, etc. The politician's wife [who is also a politician] also gets involved with a young male author later, which is also [initially] mutually beneficial.

So it's possible a conversation about HoC [the latest episode, or whatever] may have snowballed into that awful statement. Plenty of coders are socially awkward to the point of self destruction. We don't know anything beyond that tweet, really... he could have been mortified he said it afterwards, or he could be a serial jackass.

Thanks makes sense now. We'll it seems he could also have been just joking around(to break the ice in a horrible way for example) but like you said in a totally awkward way and it seems his intention wasn't made clear or she wouldn't have tweeted that.

I think we shouldn't condemn the guys over at ND as a whole because of that though, like someone pointed out we can find scumbags in every company.

Every company has its scumbags if it's large enough, I don't see why ND would be an exception. I hope they can identify who it was and toss them to the curb. This behavior should not be tolerated.

It's not really fair though to paint all of ND as the bad guys here without evidence that this sort of thing is common in their workplace. If we keep getting reports of multiple instances of sexual harassment happening from multiple people, I'll certainly adjust my opinion on them rather quickly.

Problem is this is the second “scumbag” story coming out from the company in recent days and he did it after getting introduced to a her as a reporter which imho hints at the culture there if he saw no problem insulting someone who literally writes about the company he works for as a living.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Everybody is innocent until proven otherwise, if there’s no proof then I’m not obligated to believe anything.

Then why comment at all? If you believe that then this thread is utterly redundant and not worth your time.

What proof are you expecting here? Do you walk around with an audio recorder on all day?

And this is why she isn't naming names, but just saying that it is an employee of the studio. So nobody is being accused specifically anyway.

What exactly shouldn't we believe here? Why should we assume a journalist is randomly risking throwing their career under the bus by lying about this?

Plus how would there be proof. It seems she met the guy for the first time when that incident happened. Do people want her to always have her phone record every conversation she has with a man?

Me as a man I ashamed. These dorks in positions of power think that they can do or say anything? It is shameful and pathetic that a man don't have the basic skill set to treat a person, in this case a woman, without being a fucking moron or a dope.

And is this fucking guys I so pathetic and loser that have to mention one of the most stereotypical lines and scenes on House of Cards. What a fucking nerd. Be glad that he didn't use Nerd's Revenge as a handbook to flirt.

Seriously.

So what, this seems that came from someone that was raised poorly and has no manners or tried to be a wiseass.

Now, the journalists from the Verge sure took her while to share this scandalous news with the rest of world.

Perhaps she did something to deserve the poor joke/jab?!? We will never know.

This is sarcasm right?

jfc the complete lack of self awareness on some people (the dev not her) is astounding. Like how fucked up or developmentally stunted do you have to be to think it's okay to ask something like that in a professional setting, even if you are joking?

Moreover, how do these people actually think this type of behavior will lead to mutual attraction?

If his line of thinking was "Oh, this journalist is very pretty. I would enjoy getting to know her on a more personal level," then he should have said basically anything else to increase the chances of reciprocation.

Nobody seems to understand that respect is key in romance and seduction. Nobody wants a caveman whose first impression is built on "Durr... do u fuck everyone like the girls on TV?! Buuuuuh..."

Pretty much. My boss is sexist and I'd be pretty upset if people assumed I'm like him just because I work there.

It's really sad how common this is but that's not news.

In some cases it's socially awkward people trying to be funny/break the ice in incredibly cringe inducing ways without even realizing it.

BTW, XSeed's Brittany just tweeted this:

https://twitter.com/Hatsuu/status/921204766436294656

Pissed me off when I read it. WTF?

I work in a corporate setting. You'd be amazed at how brazen and disgusting some people are when it comes to making comments like that, and openly so.

Thankfully, the two biggest culprits in our department have found other jobs as of quite recently (they were both in positions of authority) so the office morale has gone up significantly since then.

Some people are just crass beyond rational thinking.

This. I work in a large corporate setting and there are people who would say something like this as a joke, and actually think it's funny. I would never harass anyone but I find my self censoring my language around people. I tend to cuss like a sailor (Navy vet). But as you get to know people your vocabulary opens back up, but I'm just talking profanity. Sexual harassment is just...sheesh.

Please do explain how this is sexual harassment, as i read your post above.
One moronic comment by someone and all of suden it is sexual harassment!?!

Words of widsom.
It may not have been meant as harassment, but it falls in the same realm. As a joke, it is not one you make with someone you are not extremely familiar with, and even then it is questionable. There are some of my female co-workers who would probably laugh this off and tell the person saying it to "go f*ck a goat" but why would ever think of saying this to a random reporter writing about your company.

This thread is full of shitty comments. Ignoring people I never would have expected to. Some of you should be fucking ashamed of yourselves.

So tired of these "bad apples" arguments. These people are only able to do shit like this because they are in a culture that enables them to. Imagine saying vile garbage like this when meeting your in laws for the first time. There's a context to things and the context here is that the culture at ND (and surely plenty of other studios) for whatever reason encourages this sort of behavior. It needs to be sorted out in every studio and in every industry as fast as possible and that begins with a change in attitudes in society as a whole. Which is why this needs to be called out and talked about en masse.

You're really caping for somebody who asked a woman if she fucked all her sources?
