Possible new Duke Nukem game in the works?

Target all the negativity about the last few games but in the FPS renaissance we're currently in you can pull out a Duke Nukem and TUROK out of your hat and make a quick mil through next gen tech.

I don't think there's a place for a AAA Duke Nukem game, but I would be happy with a smaller version.
Maybe a remaster of Duke 3D, seems easy money.

Why aren't they selling the Megaton edition on Steam? I have it and it works and plays perfectly and also lots of content for the price.

Please dont reward Gearbox or Randy. Especially knowing how Randy is gonna try to hype up stupid features like the pinball table from Duke Forever.

I'd totally play Duke Nukem Devastator Edition that includes all the previous games. Not for full price though.

It has gotta be the new episode/source port or whatever they were working on for Duke 3D. Jon St. John was recording new lines earlier this year.

Best case scenario, its that, and a reveal of a new THIRD PARTY Duke game. My personal preference: more interactivity, fantastic level design, and creative weaponry. Focus less on Duke. The easiest, most played out approaches would be to play up the outdatedness or how obnoxious he is. Do neither, and instead attempt to replicate what made people love Duke 3D in the first place.

Hmm...

I guess I'd have to hear it to judge, but personally, somewhat more deadpan delivery doesn't sound so bad to me. A lot of his lines in 3D are spoken in a very straightforward or serious (or at least tough-guy serious) way. In the games after that, his inflection came off differently. He sounded knowingly goofy, like someone trying too hard to be funny.

I can only see the next entry emphasizing the corny elements and not the mechanics and creativity which made 3D one of the all-time great shooters. It had a real sense of place. Playing Hollywood Holocaust, where Duke loads his pistol while his ship crashes below the skyline. Jumping down a ventilation shaft and immediately coming under fire from assault troopers outside a sleazy porno theater blew my mind!

I want the next Duke game to focus less on the humor and Duke persona, and more on the aliens, creative weaponry and interactive environment. I want wacky weapons, secrets, exploration and horrible aliens! Make Duke less of a creep. The strippers and movie lines were pretty much easter eggs, and they certainly weren't the best parts of D3D, but it's all that people talk about. Focus on the creativity. Be as audacious as 3DR was back in 1996.

"Jetpacks. Tricksy holograms. Shrink-rays. I mean, there are entire games based on individual Duke features. Timed detonators! It’s like they had access to a different alphabet, and somewhere they are still hoarding those secret letters. Why are all of those ideas in the same game? It’s from 1996, and it still comes up in conversation. The Subway. The Bank. Virtually unlimited levels to play on, 20k or less in most cases. I shot Gabriel once with a shrink ray, and he used his jetpack to fly out the window like an insect. Fifteen years ago. Still talking about it, about scenarios that to this day no game has managed to top."

And if they aren't going to do anything clever with Duke's persona, they should really strip out most NPCs. The best parts of Forever (using best loosely here) involved Duke, the Aliens, and crazy, creative situations. Like the Duke Burger section.

Some of my least favorite parts of the game involved Duke interacting with other people.

I know I'm a damn fool, but I kinda hope this will actually turn out to be a good Duke Nukem game... DN3D deserves a real sequel.

Is it possible Gearbox have let another developer tackle the IP?

A remaster/remake of DN3D (done right) would be amazing

If it's by Gearbox, no thanks.

They own the licence but they were looking to outsource development to an external studio like they did with Blackbird Interactive on Homeworld.

"So yes. In fact, we've done some concept development. The challenge is that Gearbox is very busy. A faster way would be if the correct developer would become interested and we'd work with them."

I wonder if the concept development is related to their cancelled Duke Begins project?

I with you on that! I enjoyed the Duke Burger level, it had some really inspired moments.

I am catiously optimistic.

After all, what made Duke Nukem Forever a failure was 95% George Broussard's fault.

Gearbox only packed it together and sold it.

And lied about many features it didnt have

I think Duke Nukem Forever gets a bit of a bad rap. I mean, I'm not kidding myself, it's far from a great game. It's thoroughly mediocre. And I've beaten both the main and DLC campaigns twice, seeking all there was to see, doing all there was to do, and collecting every single trophy in both. The overall lackluster of the game was never a thing for me, because I believe I had the right expectations. I knew when I bought it at launch, I was purchasing a big bowl of 1997. The game plays like a run of the mill FPS that incorporates a smattering of modern conventions with a lot of old school ones. Overall it's a decent game. I don't think it deserves the hate it gets, but I don't have illusions that it's some kind of lost gem either. it's a mostly forgettable, disposable game.

I really have to agree with your sentiments, though. While Randy Pitchford is, well, Randy Pitchford, he's not the one to blame for DNF. Even Gearbox as a whole isn't responsible for that product. All they did was help stitch all these pieces together into a Frankenstein of a game and ship it, and later used some of the cut material to put together a decent DLC. Honestly, I think some of the hate for DNF is that the game ran like absolute garbage on the 360 with an abysmal frame rate, whereas it ran much better on the PS3. In 2011, the 360 was the home of the FPS and 95 times out of 100, the 360 version of a multiplatform game outperformed the PS3 version. Thus a lot of people who did play through DNF were subjected to the absolute worst version of it. Not that the PS3 or even PC versions of the game were so glorious, but when you take a game most people feel is a big disappointment to start and then release it on the most popular platform with a horrific framerate and ugly graphics, it makes the overall reception even worse.

FWIW, I enjoyed my time with DNF, I accepted it for what it was. At the same time, I can't ever see myself going back to it or wanting to play through it again, and in the era of Remasters, I can't imagine anyone asking for it to be brought to modern consoles...unless this countdown is for a BC enabling of the game on XB1?

I never looked at it this way, but you're right. Duke3D did a lot of different things, and while I loved its humor and personality, the interactivity and level design truly made it shine. Forever kinda captured the former, but utterly failed in the latter. I enjoyed that game, but it was nowhere near Duke3D.

And please, don't put a weapon limit. I want to carry an entire arsenal at all times, instead of having to decide which guns to carry.

DNF is a mediocre game. I enjoyed it, in spite of itself.

The biggest problem is that it's kind of impossible to separate the hype from the reality of the product. DNF, Daikatana, No Man's Sky -- who knows, FF XV will probably see a lot of really upset people who are thinking "This is what I get for waiting X years?"

Any Duke Nukem game that actually has a well-managed production process will fare better than DNF for this reason alone. If people only have to wait 3 years or so for the product, there's very little investment and time to hype up the release from reveal time to release.

That said, good luck to any team that thinks they can figure out how to reinvent Duke in the same way Doom was reintroduced. Machinegames could probably do it, and I'd give Flying Wild Hog the benefit of the doubt considering that other 3DR property that they reasonably transformed -- but it would be no cake wake, and I'd argue that very few developers would find it worth the trouble (and I say this as a fairly huge fan of Duke 3D).

So they made a new game based on the old engine?

Or is this a random fan made project?

I just want Gearbox to release all of the original games back in their original forms again. I am generally angry that these games are not available for purchase anywhere anymore.

Gearbox-release Duke Nukem Reloaded and all will be good.

I recall hearing Gearbox was tinkering with the Build Engine. The 4Chan stuff is most likely legit.

I wonder if they'll ever port the Megaton Edition to the newer consoles. I remember the studio behind it tweeting something about "not seeing any reason why not to". But that was around the time of the PS3 release.

Hopefully this might be tied into that. I'd love any reason to play through Duke 3D again.

I don't get why people say Duke isn't relevant anymore. Duke as a character doesn't have much to work with, but neither did BJ Blazkowicz and look how The New Order turned out.

Another witty one liner character which has made a successful comeback I can think of: Ash from Evil Dead. The new TV show is brilliant. It all depends on who is handling it.

As for the game play. Can you imagine a new Duke game with adrenaline pumping game play like Doom 2016? I sure can.

I wholeheartedly believe it can be done. DNF is not something to base on what a good Duke game today could be.
I'd be so fucking in for a new good Duke game.

This combined to how other characters reacted to Sgt. Cortez in Time Splitters: Future Perfect could be a good way.

Duke should be Badass and Capable in combat, but dumb and full of machismo in anything else with everyone around him showing absolute no respect for him and him being unaware that he's coming off as lame.

He'd be like Saitama. He'd never be famous because no one would believe a guy like him could save the world from aliens.

Except for a few guys who've seen him in action and know, but they won't change the social sphere.

I think there is still publisher/developer bullshit going on preventing the game from even being sold. You can't even buy them on GOG right now it's so fucked lol. The EDuke32 page links to a deleted GOG store page haha.

4chan leaked, but yeah its probably real

like Sonic Mania

Sweet seems good at first glance. I got DN3D collection on Steam in Megaton so fking good. I like it better than EDuke.
Forever really wasn't all that bad.

I duno. It was pretty damn bad. I mean not ultra-broken. But... still pretty bad.

Stupid silly ammo limits and only being able to hold 2 (3?) weapons at once, ugh. What a chore. Terrible scripted sequences.

Honestly the only thing I really enjoyed in the game was the strip bar and popping popcorn and looking at 3D boobies.

Hmm, Duke World Tour looks interesting. I'll have to see how it pans out.

Also for clarification purposes, Gearbox really didn't do much development for Forever. The Single Player was completed before Gearbox acquired the franchise (it was quickly finished and was set to launch on PC once 3DR ran out of funding). Gearbox helped to port the game to 360 and Ps3 as well as assisting with multiplayer if memory serves right.

If this turns out to be a t-shirt announcement, it would be so fitting.

EDIT: Alright looking at this leak this Gearbox fan map pack looks shitty.

It was just so dull and uninspired. The DLC was a bit better but even that wasn't flipping any skirts.

Dull is the perfect description.

I did laugh at that cursing soldier dude. In a sea of mediocrity his excessive swearing was a breath of air (didn't have to be fresh air, just something).

It's tough because it evidently isn't going to be in anyone's GOTY discussion, it feels middling. Despite the unexplainable weapon limit, shooting felt awesome. Shooting aliens felt even more awesome. Shooting aliens with some glorious nonsensical lines from Jon St. John that's basically what I wanted from the game.

Yeah, the levels aren't great, but most get the done job. For me, just playing as the Duke and shooting shit up was the part that counts and it is very fun to shoot everything and this exceedingly immature ride of a game could have been done better but it just hit a few right spots for a guy like me that grew up loving Duke 3D.

I liked it.

"Let it die", yeah, we heard this crap with Shenmue before 3 was announced... A hope DN gets a new game soon. It'll need to adapt for sure, but the formula definitively works today, despite the cynicism here.

Duke's come back has to be a mid to late 90s take on what Blood Dragon did with the 80s and early 90s.

so things like the flippant and edgy comics of the era (like Preacher and Tank Girl), Die Hard 3, Face Off, cartoons made out of movies that make little sense to have a cartoon, Natural Born Killers, Snow Crash, Duke Nukem itself, etc

It's Duke 3D re-packaged with a new episode developed by Nerve Software. More screens here.

These are official. This is a Duke 3D remaster. In many ways, you can look at this game as a Duke Nukem 3D remix as there will be a lot of new/original content added in as well. From my understanding, these screens are just a handful out of a bunch of press shots that will be coming out in the following days.

The lighting looks out of place, but if it's for a system I'm playing on and has no fatal flaws, I'll give it a whirl.

Nerve have developed some good add-ons for Duke Nukem and DooM if I remember well. They also developed Resurrection of Evil for Doom3.

Maybe they are using this game to build up hypr for Duke Nukem 5???

Duke Nukem needs some genuine spark to come alive again. Wolfenstein did a fantastic revive but a better comparison might be the new Shadow Warrior which went for cheese over drama. When I slogged through a few hours of DNF lately I thought fondly of how quickly Shadow Warrior got us into the action. It didn't skip a beat in developing Wang as a fun character either. Not that a new DN needs to copy it wholesale but it should spend more time developing an identity of its own instead of resting on its legacy.

Just as long as they don't copy the weaksauce combat feel and level design.

That is actually kind of cool. So I guess the surprise is that this is the source engine port they have been working on.

I have mixed feelings about that, especially since they screwed over one of the people who was brought in as an advisor. Otherwise I am interested.
