Post-patch lag issues (360)

Them bloody blokes on the XBL forum won't post a single reply on the subject. Anyway, Live has become oh so laggy after the recent dash update, I am lucky to get a lag free DOA4 round, PDZ kicks me out due to "lost connection to host" regularly, signing onto Live is sloooow, not to mention downloading large files from marketplace which is already focked as it is.

Nobody else no having no problem with excessive lag after the update?

i seem to have problems too. call of duty and halo 2 work fine, but i cannot connect to other people's games in perfect dark zero...i have to create my own game to play. it always says connection lost. i assumed it was due to my school's firewall.

yeah this is router/firewall problems. Ive had no noticible issues.

Also, DOA4 is usually bad. Even before any updates connection problems in PD:Z are nothing new either. These were pre-existing issues. Make sure you have the right ports open on your router/firewall.

No problems here. In fact, I've been amazed at the lag-free gaming I've experienced. I didn't log onto Live until after the patch deployment, so I don't know what it was like before. The only game I find unplayable on Live is DoA4. PDZ as well, but for other reasons.

Could you elaborate on that last part?

It's your internet link

How in bloody hell is it my link? :D I get bout 1mb/s occasionaly from microsoft.com (updates and such), a decent 100-150kb/s from across the ocean to USA, around 300kb/s from any decent link in Europe. Before the update I could play anything totally lag free.

Anyway, I might mess with the router though. Maybe I brake it and have to get a new one.

So router setting tips, anyone? What ports to open, etc? I have a Linksys thingy, the wireless router with a 4-port switch. WRT54G, I think it was.

oh it can be your link... i had horrible routing issues the first few days that DOA4 was out... then it all magically cleared up...

well, throw me a bone here. how do I configure it? what ports to open and forward? any specific settings? I have several devices, all of which including the 360 are on internal adresses e.g 192.168.1.xxx and the router is connected to my providers cable.

if it is any consolation, I haven't been able to play a single game of COD2 since the alleged "save glitch patch"

Every time I try to play either a ranked match or player match it says "unable to connect to server" WTF. I just went back to playing the campaign...but I basically haven't been able to play on LIVE for over a week....

Yup, that's usually how it's done...

UPnP perhaps. Turn it on in the router settings if it's not already on.

Put Xbox 360 on the DMZ. Why not? I don't think anyone is trying to hack your Xbox and it's not like you leave it on all day. Xbox 360 doesn't really need to be behind a firewall.

The connection you described I wouldn't even consider broadband. 1.5Mb/s is the minimum for broadband in my opinion. With 100 kilobits/sec it's amazing you can even connect to Xbox Live.

Most games have peer to peer "servers" so the lag issue is unrelated to the patch. I bet youre sitting on your internet "wire" and the data is getting squashed.

NO NEED TO WORRY MEN!

I have solved this problem!!! I to have a WRT54GX2 router!
the problem is the NAT (Net somethign that starts with an A Translation) is set to strict, now I was on the phone with linksys for about an hour and they did NOTHING to help me. told me it was M$ problem and what do you think M$ said? its Linksys problem.... so when this happens it becomes MY problem lol well this is what I did....

Step 1. I am going to assume that everyone knows how to get to their router settings well go there.....

Step 2. Go to the security tab, you can leave your firewall enabled but uncheck and disable everything else.
that is for all you spefic ppl out there UNcheck "ping WAN" DISable PPTP, IPSec, and L2TP pass throughs

Step 3. Go to the adminstartion tab and ENable UPnP and Multicast pass through

Step 4. GO GAME

(some notes)
As I have now made the NAT "OPEN" (which m$ recomends you have) I am still unable to join SOME games mainly games with more then 10 people in it to start but am able to join a game then it can fill. I think the rest of our probs are with M$ and thier servers so we need to wait a week or so. hopfully some find this useful so my advice DON'T CALL M$ OR LINKSYS cause they sure as hell don't know a thing about eachother. I wish you all the best of luck

OK, I did everything, but found out that firewall was off by default on the router. Anyway I set a manual IP for the 360, put it in DMZ and run the Live connection test. Everything passed, except it did test ICMP for a really long time (?) and the NAT it states is MODERATE.

I'm going to play in the evening to see if there is any improvement.

BTW, what other router beside the WRT54G would you recommend for the 360?

Also what is the IP for the XBL? The one it connects to mainly during online play. I could forward it to my ISP to make them check out what causes the slowdowns.

Um, he was talking file download speeds from various websites - for example, he mentioned getting 1 megabyte per second download from microsoft.com on his PC. Also, the minimum speed for broadband in the UK is 512kbit/sec down, 256kbit/sec up. There are higher downstream speeds available but nobody seems to do connections with higher upstream. It's probably better in mainland Europe.

Putting your computer in DMZ "supposing" lets all traffic get to your computer. It still usually doesn't because the router still handles some routing issues. It really depends on how your router is program / optimize which are even different from model to model and version to version. Reminds me of the problems (lag / join issues) I am having while trying play on Battle.net with many wireless Netgear / Linksys routers I have tried. Opening / disabling everything did nothing. Works fine with the wired routers though. Plus, you are bypassing all the routers security measure. Thus, leaving you open to possible internet attacks.

Suggest, you do a simple test and connect the 360 directly to modem. If it works, it's probably the router. If not, it's probably your connection. If it's the router, get a D-Link Gamer or XBL certified. Never heard anyone have a problem with one of them.

Still, nobody seems to know which ports specifically are used by the 360. Therefore I can't pinpoint the issue with my ISP or in my router. Some say XBL uses ordinary HTTP protocol via port 8080. Some say otherwise. And the server name or IP adress of XBL main server would also help, since I could then do traces, pings or whatever and check basic raw connectivity between me and XBL - maybe figure out where the lag occurs.

Did you do simple test? Connect X360 to modem? If it's your ISP, you can't do anything except call them up and tell them the problem. Your ISP should then contact M$ and get it straighten up between themself. Now, if it's your router, try opening everything, but that's not a good solution and/or doesn't always work. It's better to get another router that works. Most routers have NAT, but they aren't program / configure the same, even on same model. Thus, some model / version works fine while others don't.

Yeah, I can't connect it straight to a modem, because I don't have one. My ISP has their own Cisco big-ass switch in the attic which is connected straight to a 100mbit optic pipe. They simply installed a cat5 cable from upstairs to my router in the hallway. So I don't have a modem.

What I could do is - I could give the 360 a decent extrenal IP from my ISP. So that it doesn't get routed thru DHCP and it just uses the switch in the router. We'll see how that goes!

Yeah. Connect directly to cat5 from your attic. If doesn't work, call ISP, and then, tell them to contact M$ to solve the issue. M$ may have done something with their update to make it not compatible with your ISP settings. If it works, it's most likely your router. And, instead of possibly wasting time and leaving yourself open to possible internet intrusion, spend $50 to get a router that really works.
