Prey (2017) - Preview Thread: New videos and impressions

Story seems interesting. But the execution.. audio logs, audio logs, some event happening behind a glass pane, huge objective name/picture/description appearing on-screen right as you complete it... damnit, I want better from this 'genre'. I want to evolve past Deus Ex 1, not streamline it.

It's the homogenization of games. Even when you have completely different games from seperate developers in seperate genres, they're gonna look the same in key areas because it's all been tried and true. You'll always see the same kind of objective pop-ups, always the same kind of UI, the same kind of animations etc. It's incredibly bland and boring I agree, and it's what makes all games look alike and without identity. That's not to say those games can't be good, but it's always such a shame to see the homogenization of an industry.

It's the same feeling I have with this game. I think it looks good and fun and I think I'm gonna play it, but I'm not a fan of all these copycat elements we're seeing all the time.

So the Dan Ryckert wedding thread has about 3 times as many posts as this one in a similar time frame. I guess there isn't much hype around this, then?

You can only reboot System Shock so many times...

CD-Action, a Polish gaming site, posted the PC requirements.

Minimal:
Windows 7 (64-bit) or newer
Core i5-2400 3,1 GHz or MD FX-8320
GeForce GTX 670 2 GB or Radeon HD 7870 2 GB
RAM: 8 GB
Drive space: 55 GB

Recommended:
Windows 7 (64-bit) or newer
Core i7-3770 4-Core 3,4 GHz or AMD FX-8350
GeForce GTX 970 4 GB or Radeon R9 290 4 GB
RAM: 8 GB
Drive space: 55 GB

Still shocking to me that people are only just now coming around to this. It's looked so incredibly interesting and innovative from the very beginning.

I'm very very psyched.

I didn't really read into it much but I assumed it was basically a standard FPS.

The fact that it's a spiritual successor to System Shock pretty much skyrockets it to my top 3 most anticipated games below only Horizon and Persona 5 lol.

This is the only AAA Western game that I'm completely sold on this year. Dishonored x System Shock x Metroidvania sounds amazing to me.

Game is a dream come true for me. No team in the industry is better suited at making immersive sims, especially one in the vein of System Shock 2. I love Arkane.

According to PC Gamer, it has technical issues running on their own demo setups. Certainly doesn't bode well for the inital release. I'm expecting a rough launch like Dishonored 2 and Arx Fatalis (secret best Arkane game).

Technical difficulties

Prey is being developed on PCs and Arkane Studios is intent on releasing a fully-featured PC version, but in my hour of playtime it didn’t run like a dream. The framerate wasn’t consistent at all, objects clipped through walls regularly, I saw object and texture pop-in when opening doors on occasion—it wasn’t unplayable, just surprisingly rough and not up to the standards I’d expect from a retail release, yet. Keep in mind that this was an early build and that I couldn’t pinpoint the specs of the PC it was running on. There are still a few months to go, but skepticism is warranted after Dishonored 2’s shaky launch.

Colantonio knows the pressure is on. “The Dishonored 2 release came as a surprise to us. PC is difficult because there are so many configurations out there, and a new driver just came out, so it’s just a difficult thing. And we did underestimate a little bit, so this time we’re really aware of it,” he says. “That doesn’t mean we can guarantee there won’t be any problems, but we’ll do our best so that it’s pretty smooth.”

We’ll know just how smooth soon enough when Prey releases May 5.

I think the heavy bioshock aesthetic makes it feel very, been there, done that, despite the game being largely original.

I was watching the hour gameplay sporadically and just kept thinking, is this bioshock but without the unique underwater environment or interesting enemies? So yeah, art direction and terrible enemies look to be this game's downfall.

Doesnt seem to have much hype around it, if this fails it might be the final death blow to the immersive sim market.

I don't really think dishonored 2 is going to be indictactive of this game at all, or even really that fair to bring it up in comparison.

Different studio, different engine, different circumstances (using a tried and true engine vs rebuilding an old one). I will say it's fair to keep an eye on it, but that goes for every release period in my opinion.

Kind of just briefly skimming and watching parts of videos so I don't spoil much, but there's a lot of noticeable framerate fluctuation. I'm excited about this game, but hopefully they can get that stuff ironed out in...2 and a half months.

Everything about this has looked great. Dishonored 2 was one of my favorite games of last year, and I'm sure this will be just as good. I'm especially interested in the narrative, sounds like a lot of interesting layers built into the mystery.

Oh man the hacking music is rad. Also some neat emergent gameplay here thanks to AI and balancing; the turret takes time to deploy so you can't just easily plop it down in front of enemies to fire. Because of that the Mimic was able to get behind the turret and knock it down before it swiveled around to him. Good stuff.

Gamespot:
Have you ever wondered what Bioshock in space would be like?

Ugh

In the IGN preview video they said the game will take around 16-20 hours for a single playthrough according to Ricardo Bare. Longer than I was expecting.

A few mechanics aside it looks like a mishmash of stuff I've already played.

It's because it shares the same design principles as Dishonored in terms of giving players tools and an open space to play in. Obviously, it's different from Dishonored in terms of structure and the way the game plays.

If you don't like that, well, that's your problem in the end. But immersive sims are rare these days, so it's good Arkane is carrying the torch even if some people are downplaying their efforts.

Interesting enough stuff should be in the first hour.
By interesting stuff, I mean the alien powers, which the press haven't got to play with them in the demo.

Like I said before, some people are downplaying the game before giving it a chance. Almost reminds me back in the days before Dishonored 1 was released.
