Project Cars 2 |OT| Buggy Racing At The Four Seasons

I'm going to be going a bit off-topic here

I'd agree that the FFB feels a lot better in this than in the first game but I do have one minor issue and I'm wondering if you have the same problem. When I'm not moving there seems to be some wheel shake, like the wheel wobbles left and right for no reason. This'll happen in the pits or anywhere else if I'm parked. It doesn't seem to affect the car while moving but it's stupid that I have to hold the wheel still when parked, especially since I park a lot while practicing in order to dial in my settings. Seems to be an issue with every car I've tried so far.
There is a known issue with some Thrustmaster wheels and Logitech G920 ONLY on Xbox One. Issue is not present on PC and apparently not on PS4 as well.

SMS acknowledged there is an issue with FFB on Xbox One + Thurstmaster/G920

SMS also officially communicated earlier today that dev team have a fix, its on the way (MS approval process), a title update for Xbox One.

What you are experiencing is a known issue with Xbox/G920.

WORKAROUNDS:

Patch is on the way but still pending MS cert., so god knows when it will be live. Meanwhile, a few workarounds from the community on Xbox One:
  • Setting FFB Gain to 30-40 helps for me. You may put Dampening (controller settings) up to 100 (increases wheel weight) to counteract the low FFB Gain.
  • Some folks saying that THESE SETTINGS FOR T300 helped a lot with G920 on Xbox One too. I still have to test it, worth a try.

IMPORTANT:

There were cases of users misunderstanding the wheel calibration instructions in-game:

  1. When calibrating your wheel, first step is to roll your wheel all the way to left or right, then press A.
  2. Next step, when it asks to move to 90 degrees to left or right, what you actually have to do is to roll your wheel left or right until 900 is shown as the value , and then hit A.
  3. Instructions copy open possibility to interpretations, and number of customers (me included) were calibrating the wheel wrong.
  4. This is important as when calibration is not done correctly, FFB issue becomes even worse.

My favourite bug is when the AI pulls off ridiculous qualifying times if you skip to the end of qualifying. One example: I was in first and six tenths of a second up on the person in 2nd after 18 of the 20 minutes I had set for qualifying and I decided I would just skip that last two minutes since I was happy with my time. What happens? I end up qualifying in last because the entire field managed to pull off quicker times than me in the 2 minutes I skipped lol. It wasn't even close either, I was multiple seconds behind first place. Pretty sure this used to happen to me in pCARS 1 sometimes too.
This happened in f1 2017 at release too. They quickly patched it.

I wonder how SMS will even filter through the bug reports, the forums are full of false alarms like "I'm much faster than real life"->turns out he was on the wrong track layout, "sometimes the downshift button doesn't work"->the car had downshift protection. And they all get an extra thread.
Some smaller bugs probably won't even be mentioned because everybody concentrates on reporting the bigger things.

Maybe we should make a google doc spreadsheet where gaffers can enter bugs that are non-subjective - with columns for on what system, and what kind (car visual, car physics, menus, ai, setups/pitstops, hardware). A separate wishlist spreadsheet with minor improvements might be good too.

@terrible: that qualifying bug is reported and got the "known issue" status, that will be corrected soon. pCARS1 had this too btw, just not that pronounced
This. I've been super busy all weekend long, but yesterday I had some races with my fellow LFO Club members and good God, they were reporting "bugs" left and right.

My laptime has been invalidated!
What did you do?
I touched the wall
Okay...

My laptime has been invaiidated out of the blue!
What did you do?
Nothing
Where did it happen?
Here
Does it happen everytime?
Yes
That's not a bug, that's the track limits.

My wing is destroyed for nothing
Nothing?
I hit a cone
Okay, for nothing...

The game DQ me for free!
How so?
I entering the pits.
Did you pass the speed?
I was only 80km/h
The limit is 60...

Like, the game has bugs and inconsistencies, but this has become ridiculous at this point. One was even moaning like a baby because the crew took more than two minutes to fix his engine. Yeah, it's unrealistic, but not because it took too much time...

Worst online experience of my life.

LOL

Ive been calibrating my wheel wrong for years!!!!

Edit: Feels 100% better now. Also explains why I was only able to get a good feel when serring it to 540(rotating it 90 got me close to 540 on the scale). Got it dialed in for 900 and made some other adjustments and it feels really good now.

I almost feel like I am running a completely different game to everyone else.

You've got to remember guys, just because you aren't having issues, it doesn't mean there aren't any.

The worst bug is when rewind doesn't work.

Am I doing it right?

But seriously, I think it's become a bit of a meme for this game at this point. I should have gone with "there's a bug for that" as the OT title.

There are people who are having legitimate issues with certain aspects of the game and people who are experiencing legitimate bugs but looking at the official forums it's as if some people would blame the game if their dog shat on their leg while playing.

I've got a couple of weird bugs but nothing major so far...

For example on my first practice in my career I couldn't switch camera or look back...

Anyway it took me a day or two to get a hang of the physics (especially after playing F1 2017 almost every days for a month)...

First thing I drove after installing PC2 were different formulas and I started a career with the Formula Rookie (this was my favorite car in PC1) and I just didn't like it... It felt really....weird.

I decided to restart a new career and go with the Ginetta instead and I'm having a blast now.

The only real issue I have right now is that I really wish they would increase the contrast and/or put a dark background behind the delta bar/timer that you get under the virtual mirror. It's a great feature but it's almost impossible to see if it's green against the sky.

Just bought this game because I don't think I will be getting Forza anytime soon after the demo. Hope I like it, really disliked the first Project Cars. But that was mostly because I was using a controller and also trying to get it working well in VR which it did not. Now I have a wheel and this one is supposed to be much improved in VR, hopefully it is for me too!

Also, is there a way to stop the FFB bounce that seems to happen with my wheel on straights? It seems like the FFB wants to kick it a little left, which hits the FFB on the right and it kicks it back left and I get a FFB oscillation on straights.

I can confirm that the game is unforgiving when it comes to track limits and forces you to behave. :) However what I don't like is when you're forced to give a place back when you've overtaken someone with two wheels on the grass (I raced mostly on the British tracks yesterday and they're not too wide). Happened to me a few times.

I don't think anybody here has had a zero problems experience. However, it's not good mixing bugs with dislikings.
Yeah, I dislike the way I spend 15mins qualifying in the wet to get 4th. only for the game to put me at the back of the grid

I dislike the way the game crashes

I dislike the way the setup system is completely broken, and keeps trying to save the setup as COTA rather than the track I'm at, something very similar to the way pc1 would load up random setups.

I dislike the way the game crashes with amazing regularity.

I dislike the way that some cars become undriveable after you've entered the setting menu.

I dislike the way the setup menu lags, tells me I've received a shared setup and then greys out the shared setup button.

I dislike the way the steering rack adjustment has no affect.

I dislike the way the pad has no way to define non linearity.

I dislike the way I can't save the mirror on in the HUD, another problem brought in from pc1.

I dislike the way the menus hang.

Is that better?

It only happens when more than half the car is offtrack.

More troublesome is overtaking someone that has crashed and being force to give back a position. Sometimes even when you don't make any contact with the crashed car.

The give back position thing is a can of worms. I expect them to backpedal there. At least give an option in the lobby creation

@danowat You are barking at the wrong tree. I would gladly appreciate you don't pay your frustration with me.

UK Motorsport has a "no wheels off" rule for overtaking.

:(

Due to how limited testing was on consoles I honestly think they would have been better off going the Assetto Corsa route by delaying the console versions for a few months. But they really wanted to beat Forza and GT out of the gate so it was never going to happen.

You're at the mercy of patches now to be honest.

Yeah, I get that, shame on me for expecting better!

What I don't like is being told the game is fine, because it's not.
It's fine.

But seriously, I feel your pain because when it works it's great but it's become pretty clear the console versions needed more time in the oven. People telling you it's fine will likely only have played the PC version or won't have touched the things that you want to use on the console version.

Oh okay, I didn't know about that. Kinda silly when you look at how narrow the tracks are out there. You basically have to wait for 1-2 corners when it's possible to overtake or wait for your opponent to make a mistake. :)

The rule was implemented for safety reasons, to make judgements easier for the marshals (it's unambiguous) and to make overtaking more about driver skill.

So it's now about applying as much pressure to the guy in front as possible if you are faster, and trying to force a mistake out of them on corners where there's a bit more room to overtake.

edit:

The AI inconsistencies in different weather is fun too. On Spa with the M1 Procar I can drive circles around the AI on a specific difficulty setting if it's set to a dry to rain transition but at the same difficulty in perfect conditions they wipe the floor with me.
I ran into this also in the GT3 tier (didn't seem to happen to me before then), except somehow the #1 AI somehow figured out how to trim a whole 30 seconds off from my time they couldn't seem to beat before I skipped.

I feel like I'm seeing inconsistencies even without any bad weather. I got frustrated after the AI cheated me in qualifying, decided to set them to 0 and changed the race to 5 minutes just so I could unlock more tiers in the career, and somehow I still couldn't manage to get in 1st in time. Those settings allowed me to easily (as it obviously should) get well into the lead from the back in 5 minutes in the tiers prior to GT3.

I haven't noticed any bugs (on PC) apart from no image after the splash screens the first time I played, but a reboot sorted that (I'd been faffing a lot with moving files around so the installation was a bit stop-start which might have caused it).

Apart from the console issues (which were hardly surprising - these versions weren't tested internally at all by WMD2, and the external QA was handled by lobotomised chimps) and various bugs that'll no doubt be patched, it's pretty obvious that pCARS 2 improves quite dramatically over the first game in all the important areas. I'm just not clicking with it though, and I'm not sure why. I'm constantly wishing I was playing Assetto Corsa.

Maybe it's because I can't use the 911 RSR in PC2 (yet - I've no doubt it's been held back for DLC), maybe it's because I can already use Porsches, Lambos and Ferraris in AC, maybe it's because I prefer the track selection in AC (albeit with mods, not available on console. In fact, I think I've got more tracks in AC that I do for pCARS 2, especially if the ice and rallyx ones are removed from the equation). But overall I think it's mainly just the feel of the cars, and FFB. I simply prefer driving the cars in Assetto.

The weather and ToD in pCARS 2 are fantastic (especially in VR) but those are just nice little bonuses. If the core driving doesn't feel spot-on, and there's an alternative on my hard drive that does, then it's a no-brainer. I think if SMS had concentrated on tarmac racing then maybe the overhead would have been there to iron out the bugs and polish the existing content, but I really can't help feeling that they stretched themselves too thinly and allowed their competitors to dictate the release date.

Why were rallyx and ice racing ever introduced in the first place? Was this another referendum decision by WMD2 a la Brexit? Some decisions are best left to the experts and not given to the people, perhaps. Ian Bell has said that pCARS 3 will be more focused on tarmac racing with other disciplines handled by spin-off titles, and I think that is definitely a good decision.

Project CARS 3 |OT| This time, the spin-offs are deliberate

Wtf at that last Formula Rookie Asia race in career mode.
Snow track, the AI which I intentionally set to low and beat +7 seconds now leaves me in the dust, even with my best lap I'm behind 10 seconds o_O
I feather the gas as best as I can, if I push any harder I spin out. I doubt there's much I can do with a controller, just take that L and move on ._.
You did better than me, I was 22 seconds off the pace...a dev on the official forum confirmed there was a bug with studded/ice tyres they didn't catch in time for the day one patch but it will be fixed in the next patch.

Pretty fucking pathetic when it's only the 4th race in your career if you select Formula Rookie, and no-one managed to notice you can hardly stay on the track...of course it cost me the championship too...

One other thing that's annoying me is the audio from other vehicles. General vehicle sounds are improved over PC1 but no matter what I try I can't get a good aural sense of being surrounded by snarling beasts. Fucking hell, Gran Turismo 5 has better audio mixing in this regard. Gran Fucking Turismo 5.

In Assetto Corsa (yeah - that game again) having an AMG GT3 approaching one of your flanks induces sphincter-twitch. In pCARS 2 you only know it was there if you see it in your mirrors.

What's the point of having detailed audio tweaks if they don't actually deliver?

Is the PC version worth getting if you're only going to be using a pad?
I'd advise trying to find a way to try it first before you buy, peoples experiences seem to vary wildly, and it varies wildly from car to car.

Adding some non-linearity setting would improve things massively, some cars are literally impossible to keep in a straight line.

I probably won't take the risk then. PC 1 felt awful with a pad on my setup.
Steam gives you at least two hours to play with the full game before giving automatic refunds, so it's low risk buying on PC.

Please send me your version of pCARS 2 please.
What have you encountered? Sounds like I've been lucky so far, but to be honest I've only played around three hours with a few cars and a few tracks in quick race. Haven't adjusted anything either. So maybe I've avoided the bugs by swerving the areas where they happen?

Lol, someone should make a list which career series to avoid in the current build. I finished first Ginetta Junior cup in Tier 6, currently doing the second one. I already know (also from the first game ;)) to stay away from the Clio Cup in Tier 5, because I just can't stand the first few laps when the tyres are still cold and the car acts like it wants to kill you.

Please send me your version of pCARS 2 please.
I thinkt it's worth remembering that PC & consoles didn't get the same QA. :/

I know, I know, 'sim' and all that, but I really wish there was an option to ALWAYS start EVERYTHING with tyres already up to operating temperature. Warming your tyres is NEVER fun for me in a racing game, no matter how 'realistic' it might or might not be.

Oof. I just had a read through this thread.

My condolences.

I think I'd be tempted to just park the game up until Christmas until the big issues are patched.

In fact, I might just do that anyway with my PC version.
You're probably right, it's way to frustrating to play at the moment.

From that thread, this video highlights two of the issues

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6uh7XDa9ro&feature=youtu.be&t=1h28m30s

notice the setup says COTA, even though he is at Cadwell, also, the controlling issues he is having is because he altered something in the setup before driving.

There is something fundamentally broken with the setup system, the game, for me, is a complete mess, I get that other people are having better experiences, but I put 300 hrs into PC1, despite people saying how awful the pad controls were, it's not hyperbole, but this release, at least on my PS4, is just as bad.

Anyone running a 1080 with a Rift and wouldn't mind giving me graphics settings they have found that works?

Also, is there a way to stop the FFB bounce that seems to happen with my wheel on straights? It seems like the FFB wants to kick it a little left, which hits the FFB on the right and it kicks it back left and I get a FFB oscillation on straights.

I have a 1080 and getting VR to run at 90 fps all the time is not possible. So you can either set everything to low to minimize the drops to 45 fps with ATW or just go all ultra settings and lock it permanently to 45 fps with ATW.

I can't play with 45 fps and ATW so this game is basically a no-go for VR for me. Pancake mode is great and runs at 60 fps at all times on maximum settings.

Why not? 45fps/ATW works pretty well, I think. Obviously not as good as native 90fps, but a pretty good compromise.
Locking permanently to 45/ATW is definitely the best option if you cannot maintain 90fps all of the time, as the switches between ATW and non-ATW create noticeable anomalies.

For me its a mix of both immersion breaking and nausea inducing. It's a shame because besides Everspace and PCars 2 I can get every other VR game running at 90 fps locked on my Nvidia 1080 with a bit of tweaking.

Pcars 2 exhibits huge headroom spiking compared to other VR games. Just drive around with performance HUD enabled and you'll notice the performance draw swinging around wildly and erratically.

Yep I have entered the setup on several tracks and in each case it was named COTA. Also it's not only like that with Ginetta, had the same thing with Caterham and probably others are affected as well (can't launch the game right now to confirm, @work ;)).

As for that Ginetta affinity race in Cadwell Park, I had the braking and turning issue also on my first try when I didn't even enter the setup and just started as soon as it loaded. :/ It's really odd, GT4 Ginetta was among my favorite cars in pCARS 1.

I think there is probably multiple issues going on here, the setup system is pulling spurious settings from somewhere, it's the same with the fuel load, if you drive a car without opening the tuning menu, you'll get some strange value, usually very low, until you enter the setup menu then the fuel load will return to what it should be.

I believe PC1 had a similar issue.

So, what do people think? Did SMS consider the game finished with a couple of minor bugs, or did they know it had significant issues but were forced to release it anyway?

I think we are looking at two tiers of release.

The PC version was probably finished, the fact that the console versions were tested by a third party means that it was probably a case of fuck it, ship it, there are issues that anyone can pickup in a few hours of play.

It's probably also reinforced by a post on the forums

User posts - I don't know when the patch was released but to me it feels like a friday afternoon quickfix.
Just a word of programmer-advice: don't release SW on a Friday.

p.s. in my experience this kind of thing only happens when management pushes a release

Ian Bell posts - This is sage advice.
In other news Project CARS 2 physical sales are down 74% compared to the first game in the UK...

What's even more interesting (depressing?) is that the XONE version sold less copies than Forza Horizon 3 last week. It had only three days, but still it's bad.
Are we surprised?

Edit : this will be physical copies only though?

For me its a mix of both immersion breaking and nausea inducing. It's a shame because besides Everspace and PCars 2 I can get every other VR game running at 90 fps locked on my Nvidia 1080 with a bit of tweaking.

Pcars 2 exhibits huge headroom spiking compared to other VR games. Just drive around with performance HUD enabled and you'll notice the performance draw swinging around wildly and erratically.
I feel the same way. After playing VR for over a year already I need 90 fps solid because it's what I'm used to. 45 with ATW feels like I'm wading through invisible water. I might have to refund this I thought it would be a huge improvement over the first in the VR aspect but it's only really a bit better. Going to Assetto Corsa feels like heaven and looks amazing in VR.

Xbox folks are likely waiting for Forza Motorsport 7next week.

Also I think the initial controller settings on PCars1 will have put a lot of console owners off the franchise.

Has anyone playing the game on XB1 had any success in getting the ghosts to show up in time trials?
They won't show up for me, am I missing a turn ghosts on setting in the main menu somewhere?
