Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

LOL @ Andy's "Not bad" comment in the BAC Mono WIP thread.
This has to be the understatement of the year, Ralph's work is just crazy!

Those shots are amazing. And what's even crazier, I remember downloading Ralph's mods back in the early EA F1 games days (maybe even GP3? not sure). He was always the go-to guy for mods. I learned that he was working for SMS when I played my first pCARS build and he was one of the AI on the track haha. I asked on the forums and Ian confirmed that he was working for them. Good for him, it's always great to see a super talented modder from the community who ends up in the industry.

I had a go at this weekend challenge after getting frustrated with this car at Moravia (Brno). Somehow I always struggle with the corners on that track and when I got below the 1.54. I had enough of it, just could not get the feel for slowing down the car and get it to steer with enough speed to the apex as I wanted.

Checked this forum and was glad this weeks challenge was with the same car, not ;) . However I must say that on this track the car is much more fun to drive, corners are not as long/wide as on Brno. I did not have fraps running, but I'm down to 1:38.811 and I feel there is still some time to be found in the middle sector.

I'm kinda torn between this and rFactor 2... Has anyone played both and have any thoughts?
pCARS definitely looks better and it has more content for now, but I think rF2 has physics that are more realistic and better FFB modeling.

My advice is to get a Junior membership for pCARS now, buy the final release of rF2 this summer, and then decide next year if you want to buy the final version of pCARS.

Ok, german is my native language and that subtitle disturbs me.

The guy who was responsible for the subs.... Well he really needs a new job.
What disturbed me way more about this interview was "CAT data" (she meant CAD).

EDIT: And I guess "weird" means the second half of the sentence, "auf was bist du besonders stolz" would be the better right translation (also it would be the first half of the sentence then).

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks, I'll give pCARS a go.

NeoGAF pCARS Time Trial Challenge - Week #5 - Leonus F77 @ Bologna (Build 192)

Dilly - 1:39.290
BigTakeover - 1:39.855
Arucardo - 1:41.288
_machine - 1:42.703
Foliorum Viridum - 1:43.622 (video)

Dilly, you beautiful and fast bastard, can I have a video? I love watching you drive and clearly you've nailed this in ways I can't comprehend with my feeble skills.

PS, watch your back, Dilly:

FoliorumViridum: I GIVE UP
FoliorumViridum: :'(
FoliorumViridum: Fuck Dilly
FoliorumViridum: He's a fast fucker
OrgunUK: heh
FoliorumViridum: Do me a favour?
OrgunUK: he is lonso's clone
FoliorumViridum: Punch him for me at Spa
FoliorumViridum: Cheers
OrgunUK: i'll write Foli on my knuckles in sheeps blood then punch em
FoliorumViridum: ahahahaha
FoliorumViridum: YES

Too bad I suck at making setups.

Find it interesting that he's struggling with this car though. I love high downforce, grippy cars and hate cars like the Atom which he was very good at.

It's more Moravia(Brno) than this car, just watched Mikko's 1.49 lap and do not understand why my car does not turn in like that ;) But on a track like Bologna, as I sad before, the car is fun to drive. But you are somewhat right, yes I do like GT like cars (specially older), more than (modern) formula cars.

Will probably have some time to capture a lap tomorrow for you FV .

I've seen some of the Mono pictures elsewhere. Any idea how much of that detail came from the manufacturer's CAD files?
Missed your post McLaren,

but they do have the CAD files, of course it helps with the detail, but you still need to do most of the moddeling as imported CAD files in MAX use far to may (millions) polys, compared to 200+ K for LODX in game . Looking at Ralph's latest and almost finished texturing work, it really does look stunning.

Sorry, Speech - 1:42.797

Still sloppy, but getting that chicane right definitely helped. I really love this car - so fun to slide around in, even if sliding around is a sign that I'm going slow ;)

Not sure I have much more in me than that. I think it takes superior skills to my crappy driving style to squeeze more time out.

Overall leaderboard

I did a few more laps in between some Trials Evo. Tossed away 4 tenths at the second to last corner, but whatever. That's probably my final time unless Dilly starts taunting me. Somewhat frustrated by not fully understanding how to run the chicane. Lots of first curb? Second curb? Both? None? Enter wide? Middle of the track? Exit wide? I just never quite figured it out. I threw away too many great first sectors when I got there.

Never got the gearing right either, as evidenced in the video with me chugging around in 3rd in some odd spots.

I'm ready to move on to something with a roof.

I really need to get my head around making setups, right now all I'm doing is lowering the fuel load.

Can anyone suggest a guide that can help me out with the basics?
I will most likely never touch the tuning and tinkering part of this game, will i always be at a disadvantage because of that? That has just never appealed to me, would hate to have to turn down this game because of it :(

Well for time trials it's probably going to cost you some time, but eventually you'll be able to easily get other peoples "optimal" setups for each track and car.

So I will be able to give this the care and attention it deserves now I have a new graphics card - not played since Build 83 I think.

To summarise, what are the major changes since then? Thanks in advance!

Don't even know where to begin, heh. Dynamic day/night cycle is pretty big, lots of tracks, "improved" FFB (you might get oscillation when driving straight, but you can get rid of it mostly buy changing to values in the F1 dev menu), different lighting model and most likely big improvements in game performance.

Thanks for the vid - very tidy lap! You do a few gears different to me.

Put a few more laps in and got my time down to 1:42.427
Goddamnit.

I'll give it a crack in a bit. Did there end up being a good FFB exe or do I need to modify it via the F1 menu?
Have to modify it. This weeks build will have a slider for those modifiers in car setup I think.

EDIT: It's actually in the controller options

"Added Tyre Force slider (default 0.5 for all controllers, 1.0f for CSW) to advanced controller panel, tweaker added to F1 Input menu. Hooked up to FFB"

Also, the Stock Car is in this weeks build

Yesterday my mind was blown. It was the first time my brand new G27 was used in pure driving nirvana.

California Raceway, 53 AI drivers, 60x time lapse, day>night cycle, & me driving Racer L4-RS.

pCARS-GAF, give me advice on how to best record a replay from such an event.
