Loving the game so far, currently about half way through the Clio Cup.

Can anyone give me a general tip about how to set the Clio up - seems like I'm fighting with it a lot, especially on longer sweeping bends. The AI seems to have way more grip than me.

Good info, however for a novice like me that's basically a big table of stuff that all seems to have positives and negatives without giving me a clue to the processes involved in tuning.

I'm not a great driver (I battle to place top 3 versus 60% AI), so I'm not ever really sure whether the things happening to the car are caused by bad setup or my own ineptitude.

Let's pick a scenario - I'm trying to set the Clio up for Oulton Park Fosters (cause it's close to my house and I'm learning it for a track day next year).

What process do people use? Everyone keeps saying the default set ups are terrible but I've no idea how to improve on them.

So you never did any of the 3 updates since launch? I am using the update just before the last one released and its been a smooth experience for me. I would just give it a shot if I were you.

According to the software I was on v46 - which AFAIK was the F/W released for full Forza 5 compatibility. Updated to 48 now so we'll see later on.

Easy things include tyres, diff and correct amount of fuel needed for a race to remove weight.

Okay so tyres is basically don't use automatic, removing fuel is something I've just figured out, but what specifically about the diff should I be altering? I understand what a diff does mechanically but I've no idea how it affects the cars handling.

Struggling massively with fast corners and esses. The car just seems to get in to a four-wheel slide when trying to change direction. Meanwhile the AI steam through glued to the track.

(I'm on pad. Are my setting causing this?)

Definitely, a picture paints a thousand words, could just be a car setup issue.

Got time to record and put on YouTube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MlaPREJtZQ

I can avoid this if I tiptoe everywhere but that's not fun and leaves me massively off the pace. As you can see from the on-boards it looks pretty serene from inside the car. When following the AI they have no problems with weight transfer/grip.

(semi-ignore the last clip, it was just to show what can happen in the worst case)

Tyre pressures can impact your turn in and handling. Also tyres that get up to temp quicker means quicker leads.

Diff allows you to turn in easier and correct entry with your throttle instead of using your brakes.

Hotlap Challenge!

Caper Stock Car @ Oschersleben

Time Trial mode, Run it however you'd like. All platforms/skill levels/aids/controllers are welcome. TT mode prohibits setups I think... An accompanying screenshot or video would be great, but it's not mandatory. If you've got a really competitive time, it get a little more so though ;-)

Have fun!

You'll see I took the chicane like a shitbag, and it breaks my heart. I know you hoodlums are going to be mowing more than your fair share of grass, so consider it preemptive :) It's legal, sadly. There's more cutting to be had too. Just wagging my index finger isn't going to cut it I'm afraid.

Tough challenge that, bit messy, T1 is tough in this car, not sure how much of a liberty you can take with the middle chicane before the game invalidates your lap!!!!

1:33.922 for me, PS4, pad, no assists.

Got an invitational involving the 300SEL yesterday. Omg this thing drives like a tank. Chose the Ford instead of it and I was finally able to post competetive times (so was the AI, because top7 after qualifying in Oulton Park were Fords). :).

It looks to me like the 300SEL and a handful of others are not ready for release. At least on the PS4. I'm using a controller and can go from having a great time with cars like the Z4 to a miserable experience with cars like the escort and 300. I understand these are completely different animals and treat them as such. The problem isn't trying to drive the 300 like the Z4, the problem is cars like the 300 don't behave like cars of any type. Their behaviors are so exaggerated and unpredictable from one corner to the next.

Was having lots of fun trying all the track and cars yesterday - still not done though.

Some cars handle like such shit though...is it because the default settings were just slapped together while other cars got a lot more love?

also...too bad 2014 RWD Motorsports P20 LMP2 is a fictional car...its the shit!

Yeah I just skipped all the remaining events of this series, because it wasn't fun to me at all. Plus the difficulties in controlling these older cars aren't affecting the AI drivers. Normally I don't have major problems finishing 1st or on the podium (Clio Cup, GT5, GT4) with current AI difficulty, but in the Merc & Ford races I was struggling to get to the top10 (with all assists off) and the AI was quite aggressive. And this is all on tracks I know by heart so it's not like I have to learn them first.

So playing on PS4, when I drive down the track there seems to be this weird shadowed grid that lays over the track, but it fades away as I get closer, yet it's always visible further down the track until I approach it.

I don't know if I'm explaining it properly - does anyone know what this is? Looks like a glitch to me

If its what I'm thinking of, you'll see it more on tracks with high fences. Seems to me like its the fencing splayed out on the track.

OK fellas, the return of the hotlap challenge!
Thanks for being so invested! Respect for allowing cross-platform, all input devices and driving aids ...and also for cross-thread updating times!

When I read the car/track combination I thought this would be teeeerrible. Turned out, I really like that car ...just not that track so much, but I sweared a lot at the TV still knowing it was all my and not the games' fault, so I must have been having fun ;)

My time on XB1, Wheel, no assists (edit: but auto-clutch): 1:32.853

Oschersleben is only 200km from where I live and I had no idea about the layout until I tried this challenge... weird.

Ok tonight is the start of a change for me. I've always used auto gears on all racers. I now have a T300 and wheelstand pro so going to have to learn to adapt to manual. Well I don't have to but want to!

Is it hard to adjust to manual and if I put the effort in now it will become 2nd nature in a few weeks?

Assuming you're talking about paddle-shifting everything with auto clutch, that should become second-nature pretty quickly. Timing your shifts so you're not bouncing off the limiter all the time is the main thing. At the start you'll probably hang on to gears during acceleration zones for too long, and during braking zones you'll probably be tempted to downshift too early/too many times, both of which cause limiter bouncing, slowing you down (and can damage the car in some cases if you have mechanical damage enabled).

Learning clutch + paddles or clutch + stick can take longer, although it helps if you drive a manual car in real life.

I think it took me only a day until it felt absolutely normal. For some really fast and high-rev'ing race cars (12,000+) I went back to automatic a few times, but before you know it, you don't even care about the rev-counter so much and just shift with sound cues. You don't even realize when that time is there, it just is ...and it will come soon.

I'm thinking a lot about getting a TH8A shifter, because I have good pedals with a clutch (not AWESOME, but good)... my fear is that it would slow me down too much and then the fun from the physical sensation wouldn't overcome my "downgrade" feeling.

Yeah I meant paddle shifting. I've ordered the T3PA pedals but these are only arriving next week. I am tempted by the gearstick but will wait to see if I can get to grips with manual first.

Picking up the PS4 version today, though no wheel solution right now. Was the general consensus that the default controller input settings were all right, or will I be picking a table to customize the steering?

It is generally OK, despite one thing. Bring down the steering sensitivity to around 30. It moves the curve so that you can make fine adjustments. At default 50 the slightest moves of analog sticks make quite big turns which can really mess you up and are unprecise.

Thanks for the heads up. Unexpected over-steer can definitely be disorienting.

Hey, no problem. I'm glad folks are enjoying themselves. I enjoy finding combinations that drive well. The more under-appreciated, the better :)

Nice lap!

I love the late 80s/early 90s NASCAR body style. (i.e. the ones in Days of Thunder)

vZvod7H.gif

They really do look fantastic. They're so much narrower than a modern Cup car. All that extra width is where a lot of today's impressive safety resides, so it's kind of hard to fault the new stuff.

Watching some of the videos I need to attack my in sectors 2 and 3, i.e. smash straight through the cones to start with

My hud just disappeared. Even after I edit the hud, once I exit out and back into the race the hud disappears. Also during a race the wheel will become off centered. Meaning I'll have to hold the wheel at 30 degrees to the left for the car to drive strait. This is all with no damage to the car.

Yea, I did that accidentally and was surprised that neither my lap got disqualified nor my car send flying. That's not the lap I posted, but you definitely can be conflicted whether it's right to exploit that or not.
I wouldn't be mad at anyone who straight out brazenly abuses the freedom the game gives you there though... probably find it even funny if the game gives it a pass ;)

So, I've qualified in pole for the Lotus class of 86 race at Zolder. Really find these cars a handful, very careful not to give it too much throttle as I start spinning the tires. Main race comes, can't get round the first fucking corner without the car spinning. It's like I hit an ice patch every single time. Restarted around a dozen times now and the same thing happens!

I'm quite happy to put my hands up and admit I'm a pretty below average driver, but this seems way off - completely different feel to qualifying.

Edit: quit the race and started again from the calendar. Handling seems normal now. Very strange, felt like a weird bug. Anyway, got round the first two laps in second, it's starts raining and suddenly there's a mechanical fault and my race is over. I'm fucking raging now, this bastard race has taken me around 45 minutes with restarts etc.. Fuck!!!

Love this game though.

I accidentally accepted a contract for endurance racing and the "Abandon Season" option seems to be missing, am I fucked?

EDIT: Never mind, got it to show up after skipping through a few events.

Well, I think the groundwork for a really special career mode is here...maybe through patches (doubt it) or in pCARS2 we will get a few more of those things like you mentioned...SMS really needs to look at other sports titles...FIFA, Madden, MLB, NBA2k etc...there is a lot to be learned there...

yep, there's so much potential here. I'm definitely planning on being very active from day1 in the wmd for expanding pcars2 career in every direction. there's so much they can do with this very basic pcars1 career as a starting point. still completely in love with playing through it.

Ha ha ha... FUCK that boat on a track with more hairpins than Tony & Guy. You all are fucking sadists..! Hit me up when you move into the GT classes. Think I did a 1.37 or something on my first lap with blue tyres after stopping for a piss.

FUCK that noise!

I'm getting real sick of this game getting stuck in loading screens. It does it almost every time I resume the game from standby on the xb1, or some other shit happens like audio cutting off.

Then when I get in and have a great formula rookie race, I'm reminded of shit controls with a road car invitational. Still cant find a controller setup im comfortable with that doesnt make the road cars handle like shit, I've played racing games for decades now.

fun game, but regret buying this early. The thought of calling up MS and pressing for a refund has crossed my mind for the first time ever.

I close the game when I'm done, and haven't run into game breaking issues.
