PS VR demos being shown off at GDC:

  • EVE Valkyrie
  • Thief (SQUARE ENIX Co., LTD.)
  • “The Castle” (SCE) (shows various VR interactions utilizing PS Move)
  • “The Deep” (SCE) (where players can observe the waters from inside a shark proof cage)
Drive club is gone forever

It will probably never make it to market, but oh boy, do I ever want something like this (for years!)
Comments like this baffle me. They hold an event to reveal this prototype to the world. They've got working demos for people to use tomorrow. They're going to try and make a big push behind this...

... but it will probably never make it to market?

You've completely lost me on you reached that conclusion.

wtf is with that light bulb and Sony. I am seeing that shit ever since they announced Move controller. and now even in PS4 controller. I know the purpose of it, but are you saying there is no better way to track your moment without that shitty light bulb? Wii and Xbox Controller seems to be doing it just fine.
Neither of those controllers can do 3d positional tracking...so not really.

You mean the one that's only on the older prototypes?

Cool technology, but I do wonder how many developers will support it.

Looking forward to seeing how the market receives this.

Sounds awesome, but considering it includes a 3D audio system I'm pretty sure it won''t be that cheap...
PS4 is the 3D audio system.

Ohh, did not know that.

I doubt Sony is going to toss 60 Million at a game made for VR, that is a ton of money and this VR system is not going to have the same market share as the PS4 (so it is going to be much harder to reach all the sales they need to cover costs).
I'm just giving an example. Obviously, out of all the big publishers out there, Sony will take the most risk which is needed for VR. It's the frontier of entertainment and some companies will have to lead the way. Sony seems to be one of those companies.

Oculus was saying it wasn't possible with PS4 tech. Obviously that's not true.
Oculus said consoles are too limited for their plans, releasing new versions from time to time, not that the ps4 is to weak for the first consumer version of Oculus.

Here you have older quotes from Oculus

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/news/a489662/oculus-rift-on-sony-interest-we-would-love-to-be-console-compatible.html
Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe responded to the comments, saying it would "be awesome" to be compatible with consoles, adding that it would technically be possible.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/19/oculus-rift-could-work-on-current-and-next-gen-consoles/
"We'd definitely love to work with the console manufactures as we go down the road to get the Rift onto those platforms."

They're saying VR is a medium yet haven't announce support for PC or any other device?

It's like announcing DVDs and being the only one able to use it...

Actually it's worse, if this is a medium like a book, TV, and such then does it make any sense to go against a standard or not form a group to start some? Feels like they are looking for another format war type deal.
WTF...

How does this force people not to support other VR headsets? We already have OR game being announced for this. OR already support PC why does sony need to also?

It doesn't change that it was introduced before OR, in 2011, and people played games with it.
The tech involved in the OR and Morpheus with VR is completely different from those devices. They have almost nothing in common besides having a screen.

Those type of comments are normally from PC elitist, that mostly want to look down their noses at consoles while standing on top of their overly expensive gpu's.

You know Sony only needs to pay Capcom to make a first person Monster Hunter and it will be an instant million seller in Japan. For the US, Fallout 4.

I don't think the whole 'me too' debate is going to be of any value, VR has been iterative for decades, Sony shipped a VR unit on PS2, and Luckey has the worlds largest private VR headset collection. They could have both been making this at the same time, and we're never going to know for sure how this came about.

Peace and love.

Curious if MS people are already scheduling meetings to "discuss" the implications of this. Fortaleza is a Fisher Price toy compared to VR. It will be interesting to see if they will try and enter this space now in some form.

That was also my feat but according to their presentation, I think Sony fully understands what is required for a good VR experience and I'm confident that they will take their time and release a very capable product.
i'm sure they understood the requirements of regular old 3D too, didn't stop them from showcasing it with crysis 2 on PS3 as it chugged to single digit framerates, resulting in the kind of migraine inducing experience which would've sent james cameron back to 35mm.

it doesn't matter how well built the headset is, it won't make the PS4 any more capable an engine for its requirements.

I commented before but what are everyone's thoughts around game support and adoption rate. Won't the price point be too high for a high adoption rate thus hurting support?

What are you talking about?

Video games are a medium too, PS4 games don't play on PC.
They said medium and I took that to mean books, TV, and now these HMDs.

I can read any book pretty much anywhere. I can watch whatever I want on my TV.

Will I be able to plug in any electronic device that outputs a VR video signal and have it work on my Sony VR headset? I'm not taking processing power, just that the device is outputting the necessary signal, whatever that is.

Is Rift announced for PS4?
Not that I know of, but Sony is more than welcome to have PS4 work with it. Will we be able to play stuff on the Song VR headset with our phones, PCs, Roku, or whatever in the future?

Oculus and Sony need to set a standard rather than battle it out.

I've feel that not always Palmer Luckey was right. Nothing wrong with it, he will get the idea in next time.
Same with Sony VR, it is just beginning - there will be fault but at least it is starting to be reality.

While Sony warriors love to scream from the roof tops about "Naughty dog! Naughty dog!".
Both sides have bad apples.

That's true. I'm talking more about the idea, and it just seems too much of a coincidence that OR was demonstrated the next year after HMZ-T1 was introduced. Perhaps I'm just looking too much into it. ;)

Sony's 2010 tracking was remarkably similar to their current tracking.
The main differences on the video end likely amount to cost-saving measures.

So my question is does this have to be 60fps to even work or will a lower frame rate just be a worse experience like it is with a TV/Monitor?

Did you miss the part where I said controller and not body? And yes, it can do 3d tracking...at 30hz minimum.
You know the Xbox One controller has 2 IR lights that's are tracked by the Kinect right? Regarding polling rate, I don't know how it differs from skeletal tracking versus the IR lights in the controller.

So my question is does this have to be 60fps to even work or will a lower frame rate just be a worse experience like it is with a TV/Monitor?
You absolutely need higher frame rates to maintain immersion and not make people sick when they move their head around. Stuttering/unnatual projection of motion to the eyes are major factors you have to avoid with VR or you risk making people sick.

All of this is true, but unfortunately it won't stop the people from trying to turn VR into a Console vs PC fight.

VR is a medium, Morpheus is a device to experience that medium, as video games are a medium, and PS4 is a device to experience them.

I'm starting to get excited about VR.

Imagine something similar to Metroid Prime, with the UI incorporated into the visor, and aiming with the PS Move.

VR was a path I always saw Nintendo taking. Shame Sony stole their thunder before they get to do anything. The contrast between the two companies initiatives is surreal.

I fear they gonna release a gimped VR experience if they choose to lauch it with the PS4. People in this thread are drooling like kids, but most of them doens't understand that VR requires a lot of hardware resources to deliver.

This Sony VR is gonna skip the PS4, mark my words. This is gonna be delivered with the PS5.
Nahh, If Sony deliver their VR device during PS4 cycle I only expect games like Flower.
FUDstations at the ready!

If the Morpheus design requires framerates upward of 90 or 120fps I hope they do target highly polished, simple graphics though. Stuff like Wind Waker HD should be quite possible at those sorts of framerates.
