Needing the PS4 camera would make sense. You can use optical tracking for absolute position like Crystal Cove, and it's also likely to be used with the Move.

Sony really has the potential for something big. This could be the next Wii/Kinect like craze (and with the PS4 already selling at a record pace, this would take it further). But they really need to hit the mark, offer content and a good price that the market can accept (casual gamers).

Seriously, if they don't drop the ball this could be great.
There is no way this will have a 'good price'. We are a gen or two away from that, and it will need to be bundled in for it to catch on.

I feel sorry for Oculus Rift now.

However, it looks okay and I hope devs will support it.

If you can give me 2000x2000 on each eye, I'm happy. (A tall order)
I'm super curious about resolution; I imagine they'd want the LCDs in the visor to be at a high enough resolution to look good, but a low enough resolution they can count on developers matching it without needing to upscale?

More importantly, they need to be bundling it in when the PS4 price drops with everything like MS has done with Kinect. Either that or stay on the treadmill forever.

That is, if it's good in the first place. I wouldn't be surprised if this hits later rather than sooner. Sony ATM is being very shy about giving any details.

Can someone explain to me how something like this will ever be more than a niche product? There were massive complaints from people about having to wear 3D glasses but everyone is going to be fine with wearing a box on their heads?
When I read these posts it makes me think of this
"But what...is it good for?" -- Engineer at the Advanced Computing Systems Division of IBM, 1968, commenting on the microchip.

and this

"The wireless music box has no imaginable commercial value. Who would pay for a message sent to nobody in particular?" -- David Sarnoff's associates in response to his urgings for investment in the radio in the 1920s.

Why would they waste their time if it couldn't?
I suppose the key word there is "effectively". Some people may not consider 1/2 1080p per eye at 60 FPS "effective", or may have issues if any graphic concessions need to be made to sustain 60 FPS. Of course, if we're realists and accept limitations, of course the PS4 is capable of running effective VR!

Even though I'm entirely convinced by this whole VR thing. I love the look and am very excited to see it first hand.

If it's well designed, and they're able to hit $299 or less, I think it could take off, assuming of course it has compelling software that really makes it the next must have thing. It's going to be very tough, but it's not impossible.

It must've kinda sucked for them in a way when they were hard at work on what they probably thought was going to be a new breakthrough in VR, introducing an affordable version to the masses for Gaming, and then Oculus pops out of nowhere and gains all the thunder.

Looking good as it is but I do hope it will feel comfortable. I'm interested and would probably start saving for it now. VR just might be the next big thing for gaming with Sony, Valve, Oculus, and maybe even MS working on their own projects.

PS4 i think is selling well because of the value for the price... If you require the camera, and this i see it being a small market off the hardcore.
The price on this thing will be huge determining factor i think.
$399 for the system, and potential camera, and this...price investment can potentially be huge...and before anyone flames me its just a scenario.

Alright, it's finally out of the bag. But now I don't know what to expect. Will it do well? Will it be a gimmick? Are devs currently interested? What about tech specs? Price?

:/

Quite a fun guy I can be.

Edit: ah, there's a list of devs on board.
