Competition between Sony and Occulus is a GOOD thing! Both products improve because of it. PS4 would not be what it is without good competition.

I am excited for VR and can't wait!

Saw a couple of other slides on Game.Impress.

The Castle seems to be inspired by Mont St Michel - very cool!

Im 99% sure that it won't be exclusive to ps4. In the presentation sony said it wasn't a peripheral, but a platform.

how long do we read/hear impressions of the dev kit at GDC?

It's little past 4AM there. Showfloor "gates" will probably open in 9AM, first reports will come after that.

All I need is a proper UT game on Ps4 where you can aim by turning your head.

Would that be possible?

Yes, but it will feel weird. VR is all about mimicking real life, meaning that your "head" needs to control only your head. Nobody has a gun glued to their heads. :D Head movement and arm movement need to be decoupled.

PS Move in a plastic gun [or one-two barebones PS Moves] and aim with that.

Lol. It's going to be rough for you VR haters as the tech takes off.

But hey, look on the bright side! You'll be able to put on your VR helmet and visit a fantasy world where VR doesn't exist.

I can't wait to put on my Oculus Rift and play a demo where I turn on a PS4 and put on Project Morpheus and then play Driveclub VR Edition.

I don't get the negativity either. Its not PC versus consoles.

As Sony described in their slides, "VR is not a peripheral, its a platform itself". This means that it isn't a

I think oculus described it perfectly in that they stated that they welcome another big player like Sony into the VR space, it means there is interest and drive to push the technology forward. and It looks like Sony is no dummy and did their homework, they came to the same conclusions on how to best create a compelling VR device (most likely shared ideas and tech behind closed doors)

Console VR can push the concept of VR to a broader audience, and in turn, the cutting edge of PC can push VR on the technological front. this isn't a fight, its a sparring match trying to improve both players and VR in general.

VR is here to stay and change more then gaming. Its a whole new digital media that goes beyond games, the focus is immersion.

You will have things like, virtual tourism, where you can walk around on the moon or on mars, you can walk around in all kinds of wonderful breathtaking scenery, only limited by your imagination.

Want to experience walking around in an esher painting, its possible.
Want to float in zero G trough space like in gravity, its posible
Want to watch sports like you are on the best seat in the house? its possible
Want to dive in the deepest oceans, or climb to the highest mountains, its possible
Want to experience the thrill of flying, or jump in impossible roller coasters, its possible.
Want to be confronted with your fears like arachnophobia or fear of height, its possible.

VR can change so much and not only in gaming.
Agreed. The more people that jump in to the VR game, the more the tech will be pushed and the more devs will support it. Now instead of pouring R&D and money in to something that only had application for a niche on PC, they can better justify it as it applies to the console market as well. This just makes it more likely that more games will be getting VR support on all platforms that support it.

I think it's interesting that both Adam Boyes and one of his SCEE counterparts claim they've been showing this to third party devs for the past year. Surprised there was no leaking really. I know we heard things towards the end of last year, but no blurry pics or anything.

Not quite confirmed but sounds like they probably will have a theater mode for movies, and maybe other non-VR games? I know there's the usual resolution caveats, but could be cool regardless.

Yes, online sites are reporting. This isn't, by any stretch of imagination, plastered over mainstream.
Wiimote was. PSN hack was. NSA Microsoft was. Occulus? Cough. And to quote one of the articles

While one or two developers making games specifically for VR headsets will help the technology become established, more will need to be done if it is to go mainstream.

Hopefully sony is wise enough to not make this ps4 exclusive, and release PC drivers for it as well. Much like the kinect, Rift, or even the wiimote, this woudl generate a ton of free exposure as people use it for various tech demos, as well as increase the potential market.

I'm pretty certain I've already seen that on the Oculus Rift.

For sure, yes, but I'm not sure if Sony will actually have an official mode like that, or bundle in software for that. Sounds like they're thinking about it anyway. One of the complaints with OR DK1 with that mode was the resolution etc. so it'll be curious to see if Sony thinks such a mode is good enough for consumer use.

Oculus Rift plastered over mainstream media? Wut? Mainstream barely knows that VR exists and they know jackshit about Occulus.

Last time I checked BBC and The Guardian are mainstream media and they have published plenty of articles about Rift.

Probably very selected third-parties, which may include the tech vendors too.

Aside from Mark Rein, I don't see any other 3rd-party devs who have exclaimed at finally being able to acknowledge its existence.

No, though SquareEnix Montreal and CCP obviously have their demos. But yeah, I imagine it's been pretty select. More general dev kit distribution has not started yet going by the PR.

I think they would be mad to...

I bet they have proprietary handshake with Ps4 if they are going to subsidise the headset and make money on software royalties..

Online articles. Kim Kardashian has more exposure. I'm not arguing that noone reports about it. I'm arguing that it is not plastered all over mainstream media and that mainstream doesn't care.

Why don't you start a Occulus thread, this is about Ps4 and Morpheus.

I am sure Occulus will be a great platform for PC, but its not worthwhile trying to promote occulus here...

If Sony is wise, they will not enter markets they do not intend on sticking with, and they will not produce PC accessories that directly compete with their walled garden gaming ecosystems.

Man, this is exciting. It seems like Sony is building a very competitive piece of hardware here. It's not some super dumbed down version of the OR... it's a real competitor. So, that's great to have choices.

The downside of having choices is now I have to choose something! Doh! Life seemed a bit easier when the only way to get competent VR was to buy an OR and a PC. Now I have to decide if I go OR, PS4 VR or both. Ugh!

The OR will likely end up with better specs and the PC will drive better looking games. But the PS4 will be cheaper overall and may have some unique titles that PC doesn't have. Although, there are a ton of devs working on the PC as well.

I can't wait to start reading some hand's on impressions.

I am not sure how this can be better than the OR but some people claim it is. Doesn't that LCD screen hold it back some? One of the recent changes to the OR in Crystal Cove was OLED. and people said "The switch from LCD to OLED displays played a big role in doing away with the smearing or ghosting of objects." Does sony have some high refresh rate LCD magic or will they switch to OLED as well?

Dang, what I really want to know is how much and when can I have it (with some awesome games!).

I think they would be mad to...

I bet they have proprietary handshake with Ps4 if they are going to subsidise the headset and make money on software royalties..

But then they massively limit the market compared to the Rift. If they have PC drivers, the sky is the limit. everything from games, to tech demos, to PC applications like engineering and such.

They did release move drivers for the PC in the form of Move.me, so really, it's not unprecedented. They would have to figure out how to make the camera work with PC though.

I really don't understand the negativity surrounding VR in general. I mean, VR could potentially be the next fundamental paradigm shift in gaming much like going from 2D to 3D was. We haven't experienced anything radically different since. And let's face it, for the medium to evolve surely something like VR is the next step? Gamers have been dreaming about this since the 80's, it's just that now we actually have the technology to realise that vision. The tech can only get better from here. Bring on VR I say.

So... what time does GDC open doors?

It's 4 in the morning now in SF. I would expect the first thing all the journalist are doing once the doors open is run to Sony's booth to try out the Dream God, and start writing impressions/videos.

I NEED IMPRESSIONS! D:<

That GoW photo doesn't look warped. Why is that? Shouldn't it be warped like the OR images? I wonder if this headset is not using the optical tricks that the OR is using?

Oh my god. VR porn is on lock. :) :)

VR porn will come via PS4 HTML5 browser. :D

They said that stream converter box supports HDMI pass-trough, and that TV will receive normal-looking video while VR user will experience full VR.

Question, is Sony including this tech in the same dev kits as the PS4 or is the VR tech a separate dev kit? I think on one of the slides at the presentation it was stated that this is a "Mediaum" one in which there are no genres. My question is will devs have to create there VR games as a separate entity or will the games they create have a VR detection like when you're playing a 3D game, the game will say hey I sense you are capable of playing in 3D do you want to? which will change the image quality and allow you to play in 3D or VR.
