11/17/06 - One less Playstation 3 on the market, one more PC gamer joins the team

by Norm the Intern, proud PC gamer

I just got back from the Metreon, site of the San Francisco Playstation store and home of the official US launch for the Playstation 3. The gang and I were there to represent the PC gaming community and to carry out a mission to convert one diehard PS3 fan to PC gaming.

We'll post a full report and video podcast soon, but here are photos and notes from our adventure...

ps3_1.jpg
The Vede stands outside the Metreon, giddy at the prospect of recruiting one devoted PS3 fan away from the dark side.

ps3_4.jpg
The entire block was closed off, packed with a massive crowd watching the spectacle. Sony spent big bucks on the production, hiring the band Angels and Airwaves to play a show at around 9:00pm.

ps3_5.jpg
The very front of the PS3 line. Some fans had been waiting for 40+ hours, forsaking good hygiene for the hyped console. Campers indeed...

ps3_6.jpg
We speak to a couple guys in front, and get them interested in checking out the decked out Falcon Northwest system we had showcased inside.

ps3_7.jpg
Some of these guys looked half dead from all the waiting.

ps3_8.jpg

ps3_9.jpg

ps3_10.jpg
A semi with a striking resemblance to Optimus Prime delivers several hundred PS3 systems, escorted by suited security guards and the SFPD...

ps3_11.jpg
but at this point, we've already pulled guys out of the line to inspect the PC gaming rig.

ps3_12.jpg

ps3_13.jpg
A couple guys try out Oblivion, NFS: Carbon, and FEAR in 2560x1600 resolution! Greg showcases the guts of the system, which is equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

ps3_14.jpg

ps3_15.jpg
We explain the terms of the contract to willing participants. Some of the guys were ready to cut off their wristbands right there - good thing Kristen was ready with a pair of scissors.

ps3_16.jpg
Vlad, a notary public present to witness the event, picks a name out of all the entries.

ps3_17.jpg
Our winner steps forward! Neal from San Francisco now had to make the decision of giving up ever owning a PS3 in exchange for a kick-ass computer.

ps3_18.jpg
Neal makes the right choice, and signs the contract. We'll be checking in on his several times a year to make sure he keeps his end of the deal.

ps3_19.jpg

ps3_20.jpg
PC Gaming's newest accolyte and his incredible new machine!

someone should tell these guys that xbox is an actual threat to pc gaming whereas the ps3 is not so much

:lol Who wouldn't do this?

So, how on earth are they going to enforce this? Was a contract was involved?

They have a contract and a notary to confirm the validity of the binding contract.

I'd still break that shit, though

If you read this, you would see that yes, the dude signed a contract.

If there's any sort of legalese involved, I'd give someone (i.e., my wife) a gift of $650 so she could buy herself a Playstation 3. And then I think I'd play it more than her.

Goofy little story this, but I suppose it's PR for PC Gamer (and the insecurities of PC gamers)

they can sue for breach of contract.

how would they know, though? That's the thing... it's not like they have the funds to monitor my gaming purchases and habits

Would it really be worth the risk to face getting sued over buying a videogame system?

they said that they will check you from time to time,so you are screwed.

You would have to be an idiot not to take the deal. Like some of you said, give someone else the money and have them buy the system and just play it

I see. Well guess you can't let trolling go unjustified right?

Precisely. All these months, I can't justify my PS3 trolling. So I must own a system, it is important. Worth getting sued!

Not that they'd actually ever sue me, though, they'd just be SOL because they'd never find out

This article would be funnier if it was some Sony die-hard who refused the offer.

I'd really like to see PC Gamer try and sue this guy if he broke this contract, that would be the best PR for the magazine EVER!!

I wouldn't doubt there is some unintended loophole in the contract anyway.

I refused a 1000$ offer for my ps2 on launch day...I know...I'm a moron.

I did too actually. Well it was actually my dad who was with me that told the guy to leave us alone. Of course I was younger and in high school at the time and didn't really need the money.

Wow. PC gamers claim to be the most intelligent. But they really do seem insecure and terrified that their platform is dying.

But really, I know a $7500 PC is much more powerful that a $600 console machine, but do PC gamers honestly think that an argument for PCs is even valid at those rates?

What, this was just a publicity stunt by a PC gaming magazine

This is so ****ing stupid. The guy could say his brother or parents own the system and thus he isn't breaking the contract.

PC Gamer mag looks just plain dumb from this.

If given the choice between a PS3 or never a PS3, yet a new PC..I'd take the PlayStation 3.
Value (7500 versus 600) is not a deciding factor here...it's the games and the life span. I would miss too much when I couldn't have a PS3, and the PC will be outdated within 2 to 3 years anyway.

Its a publicity stunt, they are not going to sue you. It'll cost them far more to sue you then the cost of the that $7.5k gaming rig. Its also impossible to prove and enforce; what are they going to do? Check your bank statements? Search your home in case you bought with cash? They got a bunch of hits on their website and an article for their magazine; they already got what they want.

Seriously if there was no loophole in the contract and I could never play a PS3, I'd take the PS3. The PC will cost 500$ after 3 years anyway and I hate PC gaming.

They're not going to sue anyone, as was said, it's a publicity stunt. Besides, the way things are going the magazine is going to need all the money they can get to buy their test rigs anyway, pretty soon it'll cost as much to buy a proper gaming PC as it would to mount a defense in a full-blown Supreme Court case.

Not to mention if they did sue, the big winner would be Sony, not PC gamer. Imagine the PR spin on that

Well, you could always sell the 30" lcd monitor and get 360 and Wii to accompany the PC. Seriously no one sane would decline such an offer even if there was no loophole.

Hell yeah that's what I'd do.

Surely you can't stop other members of your family/people you live with from purchasing what they want.

I'd keep the monitor and sell the PC.

I wonder if, when the time comes, this lad can purchase a PSThree.

Pfft.

-Take the offer
-Give a friend $500 to buy your sibling a PS3, which you just have access to from "time to time"

PC Gamer pwned, $7000 profit + them indirectly paying for your PS3.

I would have signed the contract. I would simply arrive home and give the money i had for my ps3 to my brother so he could go out and buy it. Since i was the one that signed the contract, they cant stop my brother from getting one :)
