Well I tested my PS3 and TVersity, but was only able to make .WMV files work. I was streaming IGN game trailers that I had saved, and it was working fine.

However, all of my mp3 files were coming up as "unsupported format".

Same issue here. Hopefully there's a workaround/fix for that somewhere...

Here I can't stream AAC audio files from a TwonkyMedia server. But MP3s work flawlessly. I suppose this is just software related, I just have to wait for a fix.

I thought I would just add these quotes. I'm not exactly sure who the guy is that posts these, but he has something to do with sony marketing in australia I believe - he is also not the sort of person who bullshits. I am not saying any of this is fact or not, but interesting rumour none the less - obviously some of this has already been proven wrong. These were posted 30/4/07

If all you want to do is play games, then look to the console that has the games you want to play on it. Keep in mind that most games are written to the lowest common denominator, hence most on PS3 will eventually just be prettier ports of existing X360 games, at least for now.

Also keep in mind that the term "format exclusive" with respect to next generation games is a misnomer - as they will only stay "exclusive" until the port is done. No one can afford to hold a game title back from potential sales anymore.

Someone mentioned Forza - I admit that I don't like the game at all, but then again I've seen various versions on GT5 and I think once you see the new physics and simulation modeling, you'll be more than a little surprised at what the PS3 is capable of in that respect.

If you want it for more than games, say media centre, downloaded content and next gen disc playback, the PS3 is superior in every single respect.

HD Disc format: How many HD-DVD discs have you seen for sale, as opposed to BluRay titles, at your local JB Hifi (or such) store in Australia?

Hardware flexibility: The PS3 will accept just about every major form of memory stick out there. It also allows you to install any hard drive you like.

Strangest thing, I like the X360 a lot, it's actually very good at what it was designed to do, and that's play games. I also prefer their controller, but now that Immersion and SCEI are friends again, you will see the new controllers before this Christmas (rumble and all).

when asked: "will ps3 play divx's?"

Of course, as H264/AVC are based on the same transforms (MPEG4) that XviD/DivX utilise. As to when general support will be added, I know it is coming soon, but not when.

I think that the unofficial road map has v1.8 to have added support for AVC and HD video camera input (draw the lines for yourself on that one...

Dude, seriously, I'm not familiar with this shit, so that's why I'm asking. I just want to know if the PS3 upscales to 720p as well via HDMI or if it only applies to 1080p.

I hereby excuse my retardedness. :)

Keep in mind that most games are written to the lowest common denominator, hence most on PS3 will eventually just be prettier ports of existing X360 games, at least for now. Point in fact, Oblivion, it's actually no better on the PS3 than it was on the X360.

Also keep in mind that the term "format exclusive" with respect to next generation games is a misnomer - as they will only stay "exclusive" until the port is done. No one can afford to hold a game title back from potential sales anymore.

That said, on the subject of such "exclusives" the next big one will be the next Grand Theft Auto, which will come out first on X360 - that will make a dent into PS3 sales, but only until the port can be rushed out, probably in time for this Christmas.

Someone mentioned Forza - I admit that I don't like the game at all, but then again I've seen various versions on GT5 and I think once you see the new physics and simulation modeling, you'll be more than a little surprised at what the PS3 is capable of in that respect.

Downloading: Xbox live is cute. The Sony store will be selling you more than just games and demos, they will soon stream music and movies - which Xbox Live has no charter for in the foreseeable future... Not to mention that they've limited the majority of their user base to custom 20Gb drives.

Reliability: The X360 has some serious design flaws, and I am not talking about the overheating PCB warping responsible for the "rings of death", but about an issue that is in the process of becoming a scandalous lawsuit of monumental proportions in the coming months... but that's all I can really say about it right now.

Strangest thing, I like the X360 a lot, it's actually very good at what it was designed to do, and that's play games. I also prefer their controller, but now that Immersion and SCEI are friends again, you will see the new controllers before this Christmas (rumble and all).

GTFO with that shit, what are you thinking?

Of course, it works with 720p too. :)

Hope someone finds a way to get the PS3 to read SAMBA shares... or someone add whatever DNLA is to FreeNAS... :(

I just Enabled UPnP A/V Media Server on my FreeNAS box and it shows up on the PS3. But I only get a connection to the media server could not be established error trying to see anything.

Major Nelson apparently has a long-lost brother in Australia, but 95% of what you posted doesn't have jack shit to do with 1.8.

I'm trying to use TwonkyMedia but when I try to reproduce a file I get a connection error on the PS3. I have the UPnP thing as "Not Available" during the connection test. Might be it? I dont have a router. I plug both the PC and the PS3 ethernet cables in the wall.

Edit: nevermind. Seems like the problem occurs only with MP4 files.

I haven't been able to get any videos to work through TwonkyMedia. What files are you able to play through it?

This has probably been lost in the whole upscaling mayhem

BUT

has anyone checked out the new Slideshow option??

It's called Photo album 2 and it's similar to the first though much cooler.

It arranges photos in a uniform manner, three deep by 3 or 4 wide. When you zoom in, it splits them so u get a real good close up of each photo.

nice

So everybody has been able to at least connect to a media server? I ask this because I still haven't been able to connect to a media server, I've tried Twonky and TVersity plenty of times to no avail. If anybody was in my shoes but managed to figure things out, please explain how you did it for me.

I also love 200% zoom added to a single photo viewer, since most of my photos have resolution higher than my screen.:)

Point is to show what they are hoping/planning to release. If it is not appreciated here I am quite happy to delete.

haha ok thanks. Sweet even 720p mpg videos are streaming flawlessly. Beautiful.

By the way, Videogamerx.com is a good source for 720p MPG videos playable on PS3 with Twonky.

Have a fun! Enjoy!

No prob :)

So is MPEG2 the only supported video format for content sharing? I've sahared a folder with tons of different video files and they all show up as unsupported except the MPEG2 ones.

.VOB also plays through TwonkyMedia (well they are MPEG2).
I wonder if .TS or .PS files play as well (the only .TS i had is now on the PS3 so I can't check).

lease could someone with a 720p set test this?
i really do think that 1080 upscaling through PS3 is much better. Even though 1080i kinda sux on my TV (bad upscalling) , i think PS2 games upscaled by ps3 @ 1080i set up in the display option , look better than ps2 games upscaled @ 720p .

I just watched Letters from Iwo Jima on the new firmware...I have a projector that accepts 1080p/24 and wow. I didn't think Sony would enable 24hz output this soon, and I'm glad I spent a little more to get a projector that can accept it :)

Edit: I also got the mp3 streaming to work - just cause I still have Windows Media Connect installed on my PC to stream to the 360...but what do you know, it seems to work fine on the PS3, too :)

Or you could edit out all X360 references. It would make it an informative yet not trollish post. :)

only back on page 18, but working my way through this..

One advantage of 720p bluray playback is that you can switch off 1080i now, and get the XMB in 720p which for many looks better than in 1080i. even if your TV can handle both.

What's DLNA? I've never heard of it before.

Its a standart of media sharing within a digital home, supported by various software and hardware companies, including Sony and Microsoft.

You could have spent a bit of time reading this thread or clicking that link before asking a question though. :p

Wow. Replacing the HDD in my PS3 is looking more and more viable every firmware update.

On that note, which is a little OT, how would I go about transferring everything from the original PS3 HDD to a new one and would the new HDD work seamlessly after plugging it in?
You'll need to backup your old data to an external HDD first, there is a special function for it in XMB. Then put a new one in and restore from backup.

There is a backup option in XMB. You can backup media files and saves to another HDD. Im not sure taht you can backup PSN games...

not read all of this thread, but i read some of it.
I have a Vista laptop and Media Player 11 and everything in my library on there is showing (Except avi's)
All streamed perfectly although it took a while for all 6GB of music files to show up on the list!!
I didn't checked if i can save them from my laptop to my PS3 though?

720p looked no different to 1080i to me, but i'm not a graphic whore!

hmm, time to buy a bigger HDD.

can we get a list of software that's been known to work with ps3 streaming and what kind of files work and what doesnt?

Has anyone tried to start Remote Play on the PS3? Of course we still need the new PSP firmware, but take a look at what it says now on the PS3 when you start it ;)

OMG what an update! O_O

I've just updated and checking out stuff.

HDMI Full Range is sweet. Finally the colors look proper on my Samsung, the bigest difference I can see on Virtua Tenis 3 Demo. **** me, it looks soo good (insert gif please) now in 1080i. Similar with Ressistance. I didn't see much different on NGS thou.
RR7 looked fantastic but bit dark, I can see that for some games Full Range might be bit too dark but still - Awsome add on.

Oh and btw HDMI Full Range doesn't reset itself after playing ps2 game on my setup. Others seem to have some problem?

The scaller - OMFG O_O! Peeps who say they don't see a difference- no, no, no you must be missing something. The Difference is huge, Tekken 5 looks almost lke Tekken HD and Psyvariar also got a boost. All tested in 1080i with ingame 50Hz/60Hz switching back and forth - nothing was affected.

I'll check psone games and dvds later. Now i'll install that TVresty thingie and test Ressistance some more.

BOOYA Sony! Mega props for programers that work on system updates. They most likely don't eat or sleep at all!

I'm looking through the entire thread, and not seeing an answer to my entry-level question, so I'll ask it. :)

Is any of this streaming media possible without a wireless network? Can I get photos, music, video, anything from my PC streamed to my PS3 if they're all on the same wired network? I don't use WMP11, and haven't used any WMP for years. In layman's terms, what do I need to do for the PS3 to recognize anything on my PC? Any advice appreciated.
