FIRMWARE 2.40 WAS TAKEN DOWN BY SONY
(So was Super Stardust HD patch 4.00)

UPDATE: 7/2/2008, We are aware of a limited number of consumers experiencing an issue with installing firmware 2.40 on PLAYSTATION 3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to enabling the community and XMB access features delivered in the 2.40 update. In order to further assess the issue, we have temporarily taken the firmware offline for further testing. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up. The Knowledge Center will be updated with information as it becomes available; please check back here for further details.

There is an thread here asking users is Firmware 2.40 bricked their PS3 consoles. Only ONE person (marvelharvey) in the 800 post long thread reported yes. Their brick was due to a corrupted HDD, which reformatting fixed.

Marvelharvey said:
I managed to format my HDD and get my system up and running again... so that leaves zero people on GAF with bricked PS3s?

If you installed the firmware successfully, you are fine. No one on GAF or the wider internet has reported about HDD corruption / console bricking after successfully installing the firmware. There is even a message to this effect posted on the PlayStation Blog.

so what about people who already have 2.40 installed?

We’ve received no reports of hardware issues following a successful install.

it's going quite smoothly for me...do NTSC-J and NTSC PS3's download from different servers and/or based on what region your account is registered under?

So wait

If the next Cagney update for burnout gives us custom soundtracks.,..

And 2.40 gives us custom soundtracks.

Will I have to wait for Cagney to listen to Judas Priest in Burnout?

edit:
Fast download is going fast.
