serious question:

from the perspective of a gamer, why is it so important that one console wins over the other???

it's not like 3rd parties are going to treat the PS4 like they treated the PS2 blessing it with countless exclusives ignoring the XBX and GCN.

PS4 and Xbone, both consoles will receive every single relevant 3rd party game in the horizon til the end of this starting generation.

and when PS5 and X box 2 come, both will still get every single 3rd party game available and the console after WiiU will be massively ignored by everyone, regardless of millions of consoles sold when everything is said and done.

what's the problem is xbox sells less than PS4? if I were an Xbone owner, I would not care in the least, I am getting all games anyway.

Launching at £429 in the UK has to be the most stupid decision ever. I expect a price cut within 6 months. A big one.

Even £419 would look better just because it's under the universally derided PS3 launch price.

£429 is kind of comical.

I don't think DRM matters at all here. The Xbone is 430 pounds, isn't it? That's like hyperdimension marktunia ridiculosa. You have REALLY got to want to play the launch games to pay that.

And they don't even have Folding@home like PS3 :O

Man i remember those times :)

It's important because if the Xbone wins, consumers lose.

This isn't just about the games or any blind loyalty. Far from it. This is about basic consumer rights.

Because it will show to the world that no region locking, no blocking of lending/renting/privately selling are all things that can exist and you still can be the most successful console. (In addition to the other benefits the PS4 has over the Xbone: cheaper, more powerful, smaller.)

It would be great if the console that is more consumer friendly wins.

They're about making money I'd say. Launching at that price and making those kind of pre orders is something that will please them.

180 pre-orders vs 470 is not great for them tbh. They won't be happy with those figures, and as Sony ramp up the advertising in August to November it is just going to become worse for MS. The price difference and policy advantages that Sony have will be very important going into the launch. There will also be a concerted push by GAME, HMV and other retailers who deal with used games to push PS4 over Xbone, so when people go to the till with an Xbone ticket they will be talked out of it (or an attempt will be made) and pushed towards the cheaper and better box.

Xbox also doesn't have the advantages it has in the US over here, no TV integration and no content deals with the national sport body. They will lose a lot of sales at the counter of these stores when it is spelled out to consumers that all of the stuff MS have touted as an advantage doesn't apply in the UK.

The launch price isn't the real issue when it comes to the cost. The early adopters won't be fazed by the price difference between the Xbox and PS4. The problem for Microsoft will be how long it will take them to hit the mass consumer price point.

I don't think they will be happy. It seems that they miscalculated Sony's moves and honestly believed that they would be at price parity with the PS4. Of course, it's still too early to predict how the market will react when both these consoles come out, but the PS4 has a massive edge for now. If Microsoft is unable to do anything about it in, say, within 1.5 to 2 years of launch, it will be extremely difficult for them to come out on top.

I'm not sure as to how MS have built thier hardware, whether they intend to make a loss etc, but I'd say selling units at £425 would make MS more money then selling at £350.

I honestly don't believe MS are interested in console wars, who sells the most, they're more interested in earnings. Afterall 20m people buying Live gave them 1Bn in profit.

From my perspective - it's not a bit of hardware vs hardware - it's approach and policy.

I'm probably living in a cloud cuckoo land, but with PS4 vs Xbone there is a clear divide between one being a gaming machine that is aimed at pleasing said gamers and making it cheaper to game, and the other is a mishmash of media while being also aimed at obtaining maximum revenue from it's users while being totally inflexible.

One platform is designed by games developers, learning lessons from said mishmash media device they launched six years ago, vs another seemingly being designed from the boardroom.

I want a focused gaming machine, something that is both affordable in these times of austerity but at the same time not feeling like I'm having to pay every single penny to be able to do what I love, game.

just my 2c.

The, literally, only objective reason I can think of is that the lead console will most likely get the best version of multi-platform games and, maybe, the most exclusives.

In the Xbone's case it is, of course, also a matter of consumers voting with the wallets for the product and business model they want to see implemented in the future.

Well MS will also be starting thier marketing, rumoured to be twice the budget of Sonys. Sony have the advantage and the easiest sell no doubt, but don't underestimate MS.

Because of the difference between game ownership vs. game rentals. If the PS4 did not exist, then that would mean all these third party games coming out will only exist this gen. Meaning that in 2021, when you look back and wish to replay a game from this generation, you will at least be able to on the PS4, as the Xbox One servers will long since been taken down and the games wont even have 00.01$ value, as they do not function any longer, neither single player or multiplayer.

This entire gen could have been lost into a vortex, where all the hard work and all the great games disappear into thin air.

Usually who wins a "gen" has not really mattered, as all consoles offered ownership of the games and allowed people to go back and replay some of these games. Xbox One is a direct threat to that, and it is why people do not want it to succeed. This is more important than "console warz", its about preserving games so that we can go back and replay them and that newer generations have the possibility to do that.

If the Xbox One succeeds it might push Nintendo and Sony into same anti-consumer like policies, if Xbox One fails then that will squash this entire scheme down. This is not console war, this has become war on consumers, its a bit more important than Mario vs. Sonic, Master Chief vs. Killzone Guy and all that forum stuff.

This.

I don't own a Wii U but I couldn't care less if it went on to be the best selling console ever. If PS4 ended up in third place like PS3 I wouldn't be bothered either.

With Xbox, I just don't want it to be a success and send the message that DRM is ok. Let it struggle, let Microsoft go back to the drawing board and not pull this shit again.

It seems like people don't appreciate 24h online checks, mandatory Kinect, draconian used game policies and a higher pricepoint.

Fortunately Microsoft still has a product to sell to those people in the future - it's called xbox 360...

Still though, it appears too many people don't care about Kinect being forced down your throat and the other draconian measures. People are so shortsighted about how these policies are damaging to them and to the industry. Brand loyalty fucking sucks sometimes. Believe me, if Sony was doing this shit, and Xbox wasnt, I would be all over XBone and ridiculing Sony at every opportunity.

Its anecdotal I know, but here in the U.S. I've been hearing casual conversations in different places and quite a few people don't care or don't know about all of these shitty policies.

Maybe Microsoft is smarter than I think. Come up with 2000 policies, all stacked in their favor because it confuses people and leads them right into a big cloud full of ignorance. The general population in the U.S, have to get their information in very small, easy to understand chunks, or their eyes glass over, and then roll back in their heads because they can't process a lot of detailed info at once.

2:1 in the UK is not a very good number to me. That means it'll probably be a lot closer in the U.S.

Yep. £4 more than PS3 launched at. And although PS3 holds the record for highest home console launch weekend (i think?) it didn't do too well after that.

MS are mad to price it that high.

Anyone that goes out and purchases an Xbox One has no right at all to then at a later date complain and moan that they are restricted in who to/how they sell their games. Complain about not being able to play their games because they got banned from XBL or their internet went down. Or complain about not being able to import games that don't get released in your region.

MS have been pretty transparent about their vision and policies. If consumers blindly ignore these warnings and buy the product anyway then they are sending the message that they do not care about any of the above and are happy with Microsoft’s vision of the future.

Never before have I wanted a product to fail so badly, and it is not due to love of Sony (I don't even own a PS3 and am currently a 360 only gamer), it is because I am scared that other companies are going to think it's cool to treat their consumers like this in the future.

If PS4 gains marketshare compared to PS3 no way they will go the way of MS unless they are forced to. That is indeed why I too am rooting for Sony outside of fan perspective.

My friend who only owns a 360 thinks the DRM thing is bullshit and wasnt interested in either console (this was before PS4 E3 conference though), another friend who owns all consoles and PC isnt fussed about DRM as 'it's the same as PC'.

Same here. Same as Angry Joe on YouTube who is being called a Sony fanboy for being angry at Microsoft's policies, despite never having owned a PlayStation product and having a 10 year XBL account.

I have more hope in the people not following games as much as in certain people on NeoGAF when it comes to this, so I'm not that worried about the future.

Still sucks about the people that read NeoGAF and are being shown open disdain by Phil Spencer when he says that it doesn't matter what Microsoft does as "The super core guys, they will buy everything,"

The sales before E3 looked like this:

1840 PS4
1220 XBone

Not as lopsided as today but still in PS4s favor - the pricepoint just added to the problems....
PS4 had been available for pre-order at Game since February though, Xbox One only since the 21st May. So E3 definitely seemed to shift things given the WTD figures.

I highly doubt the PS5 generation (if it happens) will use discs at all, so the current fuss will be irrelevant by then.

MS are in serious trouble. If Sony leads them in UK and US its game over. Sony already has a large advantage in the rest of Europe and Japan.

I imagine that setting aside the consumer-unfriendly policies, the price disparity has a lot to do with it.

The UK seems a relatively price conscious market.

I think, more than anything else, that was also the reason for the region opting more for the 360 this generation.

Interesting. UK is Microsoft's land. Pretty good numbers for PS4.

Not really. As I keep saying, the british are cheap. We even have our own specialised used games retail chain. Honestly the X1 is doing alot better than I expect it to in terms of ratio so far.

We tend to have very little brand loyalty the way americans or japanese do. The 360 gained a foothold here more on price than anything else, xbox live just kept people there.

It is also why the WiiU has no chance of turning its fortunes around here on games alone. It is seen by the public as a update to a cheap console. It needs to be drastically cheaper to gain any traction.

It seems like retail musings are back? They weren't exactly the most accurate means of dictating the direction of the industry when we had them towards the beginning of last generation...

These are a little more concrete than just me going to GS and getting some numbers. We do have that other Chubigans thread for some evidence though (mainly pertaining Gamestops).

Yeah, £280 vs £425 was the price difference when the PS3 launched. Absolutely insane that MS think they have enough brand power to launch at £429, more than the toxic PS3 price point. Sony still put up a fight at £425 and an 18 month delay, but I don't see how MS will at £429 and launching around the same time, possibly later.

It seems like retail musings are back? They weren't exactly the most accurate means of dictating the direction of the industry when we had them towards the beginning of last generation...

This is hard pre-order data for a single region from a major retailer in the UK. It is not a musing like someone who manages a single store saying "over 9000 Xbox 360 sales and 12 PS3 sales" or vice versa. This data is a capture from the internal regional database for this retailer.

I posted this in another thread but it's just as poignant here

Just gonna chuck this in here, I have no doubt what so ever that when the Xbox One launches (and gets decent sales) and some mum who got the console for her son (for say Christmas) and he complains about not being able to play games (due to internet) or whatever fault they find with the system.
That said mum (and many others like her) will complain to the papers like 'The Sun' and even to BBC Watchdog and they will have a field day with the console.

Like I said in the OP, the source has provided hard evidence of these figures and they are taken directly from the sales tracking database from the retailer.

I still remember the outcry on Watchdog back when Majora's Mask came out, and people couldnt play it due to the lack of Expansion Paks available at the time.

and that was absolutely minor compared to what the Xbone brings.

Doesn't surprise me at all, I'd expect the x bone could make Wii u sales look good

How? Just because it's tracking less than ps4? It's at a higher price point as well.

People need to remember, this is not a 100 meter sprint, but a long 10 km race.

Look what Sony was able to achieve this gen after people wrote them off.

What if a year from now, Microsoft drops price? What if it gets more exclusive games etc. We can't predict where the industry will go.

Though I predict this first year, ps4 will easily outsell the XbOne, I still say XbOne will sell more than Wii U.

It's price that's the key here, you can't sell a product that for consumers is identical to its competitor (in that it plays the majority of the same games) at £80 more. MS need to lower the price by at least £50 or they're going to lose their lead in the UK.

People talk about the price being okay at launch, but if they reduce it as needed 4 months later when general demand starts to kick in, won't you be pissed at having paid so much on day 1?

Indeed, I was one of those who called. I was thinking about calling in to my old MI Gamestop to have a chat with an old manager friend but I haven't done so yet.

Do the numbers really surprise you though? Price and all the BS MSFT is shoving in speak volumes. Launch units will sell well though.

My only problem with that is the, "Can you play PS3 games?" None of that will be there at launch and I'd wait to see how that is implemented before throwing that in there like that.

It's almost like free advertising for Sony.

Remember the daily reach of the Sun is something like 3.5m readers, all of which will be average consumers being told that PS4 is cheaper, it doesn't need online and that you can trade your games in.
