'PS4 as quiet as a mouse and as powerful as a lion', says Ripstone

So, it can sneak up on you and maul you to death without you ever hearing it coming.

Stealth tech confirmed!

Haha this is like one of those typical sayings from the mysterious East.

I can hear my PS3's fan idling from across the room during the night. I have to usually unplug it now.
You mean mythical creatures? Like phoenix's, el chulathingies, maybe even a puma?

Yeah, like a warthog right?

But at least you wouldn't have to worry about your armor being pink...

He got PS4, yeah, cool, but which games did he play?
Quiet as a mouse... when idling... tells nothing.

... have you ever seen a laptop before? An Ultrabook?

Screen + Processor + RAM + HD + Blu-Ray + Keyboard + TouchPad + Speakers ...

However does that not overheat? Oh wait they have heatsinks, fans and new smaller more efficient processors..

Thing doesn't have to overheat since it consumes roughly as much power as PS3.
And no, I haven't seen gaming ultrabook and those that I have seen idle most of the time.
You could easily put 5 more idling CPUs into them, it won't make a difference.

It's not THAT surprising, I'd be surprised if the XBO was super loud. The reason of course being modern architectures and fabrication processes. Despite being much more powerful than last gen consoles, these things will certainly have lower TDPs than those did at launch, as well as better power gating and frequency switching by load, unlike those which were pretty much always on full power while gaming.

I still want to see the PS4 heatsink and fan, the original PS3 one was quite a beast.

XBO is silent as fuck. We've seen video of what it sounds like.

I'm glad to hear PS4 is seemingly pretty quiet as well, though

Linky please? I'm sure it will be as they said 10 years of silent running was the design goal, but I missed when that video came up.

Its great that its quiet.

Given the size of the console and the components within I'm eager to see a tear down to find out how Sony have approached the thermal management. They obviously have a minimalist approach whereas MS have gone big box with lots o' holes and a monster fan.

As for Ripstone. A new PS4 in Liverpool! tomorrows story will be about a burglary at Liverpool based dev lol!

You just reminded me of how fucking ugly Halo 4 is.

PS4 looks so slick. Nice to know it's quiet. I'll probably pick it up in a few years.

I'm more about the why of things with that game. I mean honestly, why have a sun visor to limit FOV when you are already looking through polarized glass (at a minimum) already? Is it that important to try and make the armor look like a soldier with large muscles, shaved head, and wearing a hat (to me, master chief always resembled P jack out of tekken...)? I find that more silly, than rendering styles and color pallet choices (deliberately not going to discusscortana). How this releates to actual rendering capability of each of the machines I feel is entirely unrelated.

The more powerful the consoles are, the better game development in general I can expect to see across the board and not held back because of "platform X".
Hopefully...

(I probably enjoyed the first few seasons of RvB because it made so much fun of its self and the halo setting in general. )

All joking aside. Can I remote play a bluray or video from my ps4 to my vita? I would love to have a bluray inside the ps4 and to be able to watch it in bed with headphones on the vita.

I can do that on my PS3 now, but I don't know if that's just a CFW thing or a normal thing. I'd guess you could.

You can definitely remote play a blu-ray rip mp4 or avi.. requiring that it is in the right codec.

no news on remote playing actual blu-ray's though, and frankly I don't think it will happen.

I hope all these quotes about its noise levels are true and not hyperbole.

Given the size of the One and the giant ass fan, you can actually SEE how the One would be silent.

But I still find it hard to believe Sony have crammed those specs and a PSU into that casing that will be silent, cool and reliable.

Would be amazing if true.

I honestly don't understand how a console that powerful and that quite won't overheat when the case is the size that it is and the psu is internal. The PS4 engineering is outstanding.

Because it's not as powerful as people make out perhaps?

There are laptops that have more powerful internals aren't there?

This pretty much. Which is why people are even more antsy about the Xbox One being as underpowered as it is. Neither of these consoles is particularly powerful, but the Xbox One just takes the biscuit. What were they thinking with Bonaire tech and DDR3....sigh...

I just hope they didnt trade a possible heating problem in favor of a quieter system. My PS3 slim sounds like a jet engine when starting up, but after the first 45 seconds of starting up, it is very quiet. I do not have any heating problems with the PS3 Slim and I can live with a short period of loud noise compared to a machine that overheats. I dont believe Sony would take this shortcut to lower the sound, but after the problems I had with the 360, PS2, and PS1 breaking, it is difficult to trust MS or Sony when it comes to new hardware and problems. After the launch 3DS scratching some screens when closing and the hinges on some DS models even Nintendo is guilty at times.
