PS4 Neo would 'fundamentally change' No Man's Sky, says creator

Devs are starting to talk... it is happening.

(Thought he could be talking about PC)

"For our game (No Man's Sky) it’s procedurally generated. So more powerful hardware doesn’t just mean upgraded textures or a higher framerate. It means we can fundamentally change the experience.

"You can have - and you'll see this from our patch notes - we're able to change huge things in the universe, because we have complete control. "With more powerful hardware, we can have more trees, more leafs on those trees. The density or immersion of worlds, or new types of worlds could exist.”

Procedurally Erase if Old.

I thought this was specifically the kind of thing Sony wouldn't allow developers to do though, so this is truly a "could" thing, right?

Not going to happen as we know Sony expressly forbids new features like these. If your talking about graphical features like more trees, that's far different than introducing entirely new worlds that can't exist on PS4.

According to that then the PC version should be leagues better than the PS4 version but I doubt it twill be

I thought they couldn't do this. This is gonna be a weird year, trying to figure out wtf is going on with these upgraded consoles.

Well Sony should in theory let devs do whatever they want. I mean if they and other developers want to add stuff that a normal Ps4 cannot do then should they stop them?

I don't see how having slightly denser environments is fundamentally changing. The Neo ain't gonna be so powerful you can do gameplay experiences that weren't possible before, it'll allow you to tighten up the graphics in level 3. Yeah that's always a welcome change, better IQ, faster loadtimes, etc, but it's not a fundamental change. Does this guy always speak like this?

Yes? That's the point of enforcing parity of experience. Its not allowed as this is just an extension of the normal PS4 experience.

This guy is the next Peter Molyneux.

Sony pretty much told devs that their Neo games cant have exclusive features. Then this guy goes ahead and says exactly that. Good job.

I assume the "new types of worlds" would be those fundamental changes, because denser environments aren't exactly what I would call revolutionary.

Edit: Hmmm... Reading this article, was he actually asked about the Neo? Because we don't see the question, and he never specifically mentions it. It could just be general thoughts on what better hardware could lead to. If so, I'm not sure that there's anything meaningful actually going on here.

So does that mean the PC version will be fundamentally different?

One would think, but I'm pretty sure the answer to that is going to be no.

Because then you divide the ecosystem. The statements Sony has given for the PS4 Neo honestly make no sense but they are right in not wanting to create divided pools

LOL, part of the reason I just cancelled my pre-order of the Steam version was my experience with the PS4 version and in large part the lack of diversity in what we explored after several hours along with the sheer grind and lack of that spark of excitement I get from other games heavily based on exploration (lore, variety, knowledge, inspiration, "progression", emotion etc etc)

Considering an earlier report about more content coming into the game for free, I hope they do improve all that stuff, as I would definitely buy it.

If he is speaking just graphical changes/effects, then those are allowed to exist.

Exclusive gameplay options/mechanics or Neo only game modes cannot.

With the recent reports that Sony is making Neo more powerful to compete with Scorpio I can see them abandoning their past comments on parity. After all those documents were internal only right? They've technically never told us anything past the fact that Neo exists (unless I'm mistaken).

How would you know if they can't exist?

This says it all

not a lot to back up those reports fortunately

Entirely different worlds would count as 'neo only gameplay options and mechanics'.

Which is weird because he lumps that in with denser foliage and more trees, which is not even the same scale and would absolutely be allowed.

No, Murray is starting to seem Molyneux-like with his vision. Must be a EA learned thing

Yup. I don't know why this guy is being idolised and defended when he's been caught out chatting shit about a feature in his game. I have a feeling No Man's Sky will be one of those games on GAF whereby anyone who says anything negative about it will be roasted though.

It better be a "they better do it thing"

For both Sony and MS I'm so interested to see how they market these new consoles that are slated to release. Not quite a full console cycle leap, but somewhere in the middle. This has never been done in the industry before and I'm worried about the type of restrictions they'll put on devs.

It's a lose lose situation from where I'm standing at. Let's say a dev can make a gamer "better" take NMS for example. If Sony allows this, then the 40 million + folks who own an OG PS4 will cry foul. If as a dev you could do this and Sony doesn't allow it, then the folks who buy Neo will also cry foul.

If I get the Neo (which I will) I want the best possible experience, regardless of the OG PS4 crowd. Second class citizens they better become haha.
