good start but what are the upcoming games sony will have to maintain that start?
i think titanfall will push xbone back top in us and maybe uk.
maybe sony can do their own fps promotion, like free bf4 dlc pack in mar?

Hardcore fps gamers prefer xone controller. Mlg cod was played on xbox. Still is I think.

Mouse and keyboard.

I would say north of 50% of Xbone owners will buy Titanfall. A 70% attach rate on Xbox One would be my guess.

This is ludicrous. Even Super Mario 3D World, which is a genuine exclusive title and not on two other platforms, doesn't even have close to a 50% attach rate with Wii U owners. More like 30% at best.

And you are proposing that an online-only, multiplatform title will be bought by as much as 70% of all XB1 owners?!?! Absolute crazy talk.

Yeah I guess you're right about the Nintendo thing. Maybe I'm just caught up in the hype of this thing. I am not a CoD gamer and I don't even own an Xbox One (None of my friends do either). I just have trouble believe that anyone who bought an Xbox One isn't interested in Titanfall. Of course, I am most likely wrong.

The fact that its MP only will hurt it's attach rate somewhat as there are plenty of single-player only gamers out there. Though I agree it's hard to see why they'd have bought an X1 already other than hype/brand loyalty since there aren't a lot of great single player experiences on it (or PS4 for that matter) yet.

I said guddayumn!! That is insane. Means they did 1.1 million in little over a month (was 4.2 as of Dec. 28).

January NPD was 270K. EU probably similar I guess so that's around 550K in January. That means another 550K so far this month.Probably get to around 750K by the end of the month. So I'd guess February NPD will be around 250-300K with EU and Japan also at around 250K. Does this sound about right?

Edit 1: Wait no, that's sales not shipments(so Japan isn't included yet), that would suggest already at around 275K in US this month. So February NPD would then be around 350-400K?

Edit 2: Oh no till Feb 8. I guess scrap all of the above.

Alot of people got them as gifts or bought them, because they couldn't find a PS4 before Christmas and there was a since of urgency in people to not disappoint loved ones. That's why there was such a sharp drop in January. PS4 is still selling everything they make.

No, the PS4 is more than likely simply doing a good portion of it's sales outside the US. Playstation has always been a global brand as opposed to the American centered Xbox (which makes MS loosing NA all the more devastating)

No coz it stop february 8 not yesterday

And people wonder why Sony isn't yet dropping a ton of new game announcements. The simple answer is they seemingly do not have to in order to move units right now. And they are highly focused on Japan launch, too.

Great news all around. Very happy to be a Sony console gamer right now. Gonna get a real computer this year and I think the Playstation (3/4/Vita) + PC route will serve me well this gen.

Didn't know this was worthy enough for a new thread!

For greater context, I expanded the sales to an even 34 month comparison.

I find it kind of amazing that a big publisher like EA so incredibly misread the market. I hope in a few years someone writes a book about Xbox One's development and spills the beans on the Titanfall exclusivity deal. I'm sure they were assuming Xbox One would repeat 360's success in NA and whatever MS paid them for exclusivity would make up for lost PS4 sales.

The problem is that, despite all the talk about fanboyism, there's hardly a precedent for back-to-back marketshare domination outside of the PS1 and PS2 and hardcore gamers seem to be surprisingly platform agnostic to some extent.

I remember watching a documentary on CNBC a long time ago about the game industry and the former head of Sega of America, I forget his name, during the Genesis days said something along the lines of the thing that people don't understand about the industry is that marketshares during a new generation can change overnight.

In the NES days, Nintendo had a monopoly on the marketshare. During the 16-bit era, it turned into a 50/50 split between Sega and Nintendo in the U.S. and at one point Sega had a larger market share. In the 32-bit days, gamers jumped ship to Sony, a company that had never released a home console before, and the PS1. The only precedent of a repeat was when PS2 dominated. Even with back to back wins with the PS1 and PS2, that couldn't save Sony last gen when the Wii took off and 360, at least in the U.S., outsold the PS3 consistently.

I just find it amusing/hard to believe that EA must have thought MS had it in the bag. It should have been evident after the prices and specs were announced following the disaster the Xbox One reveal was that the average joe gamers wasn't going to pony up an extra $100 out of pure brand loyalty to MS when there was a cheaper and more powerful system released on the market.

Keep up with the goalpost
[The industry is] doomed still because 2/3 of the players are doing badly

I don't know why people keep repeating this. Companies failing in any market is normal and healthy. It's a natural part of competition. They get replaced by companies who feel they can do a better job. The PS2 era was one of the most bountiful for players and there we had a market where the PS2 sold 150million+ and the runner up XBox sold less than 25million.

I also think the market is in sad shape, but it's definitely not because companies are failing. The cause and effect of that is actually quite reversed. It's not that the market is getting destroyed because companies are failing, but rather that companies are failing because they are destroying the market.

The big questions remain:
1) How long will the PS4's momentum last?
2) What will Sony do with their market lead?

No, the PS4 is more than likely simply doing a good portion of it's sales outside the US. Playstation has always been a global brand as opposed to the American centered Xbox (which makes MS loosing NA all the more devastating)

That's pretty much the point 90% of the people saying the x1 has a "chance" of keeping up with the ps4 fail to realize.
Hasn't the 360 sold almost half of the 80M units in NA?

Between the UK and US, MS sold way more than half their 360s there. Had the PS3 and 360 sold similarly in NA, the 360 would have lagged by 20 million or so. It's something most people to realize and it's going to be even worse for the X1 since they're going to sell less in Europe and PS4 will likely be ahead in the US and UK

Some people just don't get that for some reason and still expect the X1 to do 360 numbers, which isn't going to happen

As I said elsewhere, no way PS4 sells 9M in months 13-19. That's where it will fall behind PS2 and stay behind. But I still think it will sell very well and beat PS3 handily for lifetime sales.

Cant't wait for titan fall to release so that some here see that it will do nothing to stop ps4. One game doesn't change a generation.

If my math serves me correct, then at this pace, Sony's oft-questioned global strategy is on course to have PS4 sales exceed PS2's by five months? That would be record setting?

Heard back from my supply chain guy, reworked the figures:

Code:
		Production	Air shipping	Sea shipping
August 0.2 0 0
September	0.4 0 0.6
October 0.9 0 0.8
November	1.7 0 1.8
December	1.7 1.0 0.7
January 1.2 0.3 0.9
February	1.2 0.2 1.0

Figures in millions.

Yup. 1.7m peak production per month. Crazy times if he is right. Makes sense though.

Any idea on the MS shipping/production situation - are they still producing 1m a month? That would put them roughly at 1.6m unsold units at the end of January if one were to assume sales of 300k WW for that month...

That is a crazy amount of consoles per month and people still having problems finding them like me :(

dude..... I guarantee MS got a fucking steal on TitanFall given how the install bases are turning out. Hopefully the whole fiasco will signal the end of selling third party exclusivity.

This. I do wish Titanfall would be on PS4 (ill be playing it on PC now), and I'm sure EA and Respawn are kicking themselves for going exclusive with MS.

People actually believing that Titanfall will change everything now? Even with this OP result?
Man, MS's PR drones are effective.

I'm sure it will have an impact, doubt it will change the world wide results though in the long term, but it's looking like it could be the system seller to the casual public. All I see on Social media is people complaining about not getting titanfall on their ps4 or willingness to buy the xbone just for it.

So around 800k PS4s still sitting on shelves world-wide.

Okay, if you really insist
Yep. With 1.2 PS4s produced each month, that's the total number for May/June. Crazy. MS is gonna get steamrolled by Sony.

And Xbox will be at maybe 4 million (sold through). 2.5x more PS4s than Xboxes, just by mid-year. MS is in deep trouble.

En route to places since February isn't over, I've also included the stockpiled Japanese units in the Feb shipment. I've sent some messages to some supply channel people I know to get a picture on what the retail stock situation is like.

They already broke records at launch.
Yes, but that was a record setting launch, which Microsoft purports to have had as well, so it's better to look at the longer term here.

Some, such as anexahune, however, are expecting PS4 sales to fall off a cliff after the 12th month. What do you think about that?

Why do people say "Microsoft must be worried?… etc"

I just can't imagine Microsoft worrying that the PS4 is selling that much when they know they have things that people will gravitate to. I'm sure they are playing the waiting game and not getting all in a bunch just because of a couple million. Maybe I'm wrong but I just can't imagine it

Heh, it's gonna be interesting to see how long it will take Xbox One to pass the Wii U's worldwide sales. August? Christmas?

This will have 10 million+ sold by E3.

Someone sent me a screengrab from the future!

MS needs to drop that camera thingy that comes in the box and shave $100 off the price ASAP.

Also, off topic.: EA on TITANFALL: Imadehugemistake.gif LOL

Now Sony, bring on the new IP for fcks sake.

Because the current situation could be snowballing out of control for MS - More PS4s in the wild -> more word of mouth / desire to play on the same console as friends -> more PS4s in the wild...
Early adopters are basically setting the trend.
