PS4 sold "more than twice as many" units as Xbox One, new court papers show

Im gonna continue ushing player count as the only metric for a games success cos infinite only has multiplayer 🤪🤪
Out of curiosity what would you use as a measure of success for its single player?

Halo Infinite's sales were not great so ultimately not many cared for the single player to buy the game either even if you ignore the declining free to play multiplayer population.

I hope they continue to develop and improve the single player though.

Well there multiple types of success.

Financially i dont know because gamepass would provide most access.

A games quality is the biggest indicator of success for the players, I gage that on enjoyment, and if it reviews well.
Also we can look at the different components of the game, sound, gameplay, visuals, story, length etc and by now we can assess there quality because we have many games of varrying quality that came before it that we can compare it to.
Just to be clear not saying there weren't issues or it is the best in every aspect, just that the overall package was very good.

Halo is also known for its single player...

So it aint a weird coping mechanism, its just the truth and the MP is not terrible, ive already stated in this thread some of its positive attributes.
But please read the whole exchange about infinite, everything has been discussed already, you ain't saying anything new, that different posters has not already said to me.

I wonder how it will go this gen. Are all camps expecting it to be the same. How do we gauge it if it isn't?

I mean, Sony will sell the most no matter what...we all have to agree on that surely but how crazy would it be if xbox gets to 75 percent or 80 percent total sales of ps5. What a crazy turnaround that would be and I think ultimately healthy for the industry as a whole and we will all win .all companies will be on their toes and offer us the best deals / services they can.

I mean come on! Let's be real, they handed the start of the generation to playstation on a silver platter with how badly they messed up pre-launch. And yet despite such an awful start, it still sold half of the behemoth ps4 sales. It's definitely an impressive turn around!

I don't get how "It sold half of the PS4" is seen as some type of success. Instead of comparing the XB1 to PS4 we should compare the XB1 to it's predecessor... The XBOX 360

XBOX 360 - 87 Million units sold
XBOX One - 55 Million units sold

That's a 30+ million drop in customers and user base. A cataclysmic failure. Framing it as "half" the PS4 doesn't begin to address the actual reality of the situation. For example... I'm an EU gamer. I game and am friends with people from Germany, France, Hungary, Sweden, etc etc Do you know what happened to the XBOX brand according to my European gamers, outside of the UK?

According to them, while PS was the dominant brand. Since the launch of XB1 the brand doesn't really exist outside of a few hardcore enthusiasts. While PS has become the de facto console of choice.

That's market share XB can't, or at least to date, hasn't got back. And while we put huge importance on acquisitions, on the ground nothing beats "Where my friends play." At least here in Europe.

Just like the cataclysmic failure of the ps3 to ps2.

But, that is now in the past. So does it matter?

To me it’s more surprising that they managed to sell that many. The Xbox One was never on my radar and I knew no one who had one, it was very anonymous to me. Might be a regional thing though.

It’s definitely a failure, but it’s hardly catastrophic. I mean 50-60M is still a ton of systems and surely they must have been profitable selling that many. It’s still the 14th best selling console ever made with those stats.

Going from Wii (101M) to WiiU (13M), now that’s catastrophic.

The key difference is that XB has lost market share in a myriad of countries. It was a global brand. Sure PS dominated outside the US but XB had a presence. Now it's on par with a novelty item. I've owned every XBOX console. I'm in my 40's and XBOX in Europe has never been this bad.

The majority of discussion is US based so I don't think most are aware.

Maybe, I haven’t seen their loss in market share on a per country basis. I just wanted to explain my reasoning at least, I think it was ‘surprisingly successful’ - if that makes sense.

A novelty item selling 50m units? But without doubt they need to rebuild in Europe

A halo without co op or forge is barely a halo at all. It should've never launched without those things.
They were under pressure to get the game out after a lengthy delay. It clearly had a troubled development cycle. Despite that they delivered an 85+ Metacritc scored game. The fundamentals are solid and co-op should be out this month with Forge hopefully by November. It should have had all the features but they are currently being worked on and should all be out by the end of the year. It is what it is.

We arent going to get anywhere productive with this, let's drop it while we can. Have a good evening!

Yeah,no shit, you dont want to continue because you have been chatting shit, saying I need to cope or accusing me of being in denial with no explanation into why, because you have no argument. Happens often when people dont have a decent argument they start attacking the character of the person they are arguing with.

I gave you the opportunity to drop this, and you're continuing to mald. Its out of my hands at this point. I hope you feel better.

Back on topic, am I right in thinking the 360 had a year head start on the PS3? All this talk of sales has got me interested in old numbers.

Pricing was huge as well as better games
Not that much, if you have something people actually want you can sell them 1500$ phones!

Also, weeks later there were tons of deals on the xbone (before any price adjustment were announced). I recall at some point in early 2014 they were almost giving away the consoles if you substracted the value of the packin games!

What does this mean? MS hasn't been more competitive in a generation. They are clearly doing something right.

It means I don't think its very cool of them to snatch up a bunch of franchises that would've been on their console anyway, as a consumer that doesn't make me want an xbox, it just annoys me a bit.

So why are you being selective to Microsoft on this issue? Sony and even Nintendo have prevented franchises that were on other platforms, from going on other platforms. Even that Monolith studio that's so popular at Nintendo these days used to be PS2 exclusive iirc.

This is on a totally different scale and you know it is.

Because its totally different.

That's always the answer.

Compared to Sony? Not really, they had been playing the same card for generations, if anything MS just caught up with them.

Both Sony and Microsoft have been buying studios and throwing money at timed exclusives for years, but Sony has never done anything like this.

Microsoft scooped up two of the industries biggest publishers for no reason other than to keep them off the competition. There is literally no comparison at all, there is no "both sides". If we wake up tomorrow and Sony have bought Capcom, we might have something worth talking about. Until then, nah.

I hope you do to mate, its just pretty ironic that you start a convo behaving like a bit of a dick telling me to cope and im in denial and all that crap and then when you're asked to explain why you're saying these things you're like "lets end this convo", perhaps if you're not willing to have a decent conversation dont shit talk to people in the first place.
But yes lets end this, frankly I never wanted it to begin.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Its chart performance gives you some indication. It was like the game didn't even exist in the UK monthly chart on launch. US it had a big drop and was out of top 20 by Feb. Never made any rolling 12 month charts thereafter.

UK physical only charts are a terrible metric to gauge Xbox sales, as reportedly for games like Elden Ring, 80% of Xbox sales are digital. We don't know every games physical/digital divide, but ER is a big game and it should be a good indication of how Xbox sales trend.

Several games have proven sales and UK charts don't relate, and NPD isn't 100% either.

In this case we even have a game in the same franchise providing an example of the disconnect, Halo 4. Which fell off pretty quick on NPD, dropped fast in UK charts, and had dropping player numbers like Infinite, and still sold well.

Tbf the data in that post did say it included digital.

I'm not sure where you're getting this idea from. Your example of Halo 4

NPD
Halo 4
1st Month: 2nd
2nd Month: 3rd
3rd Month: 7th

Halo Infinite
1st Month: 2nd
2nd Month: 15th
3rd Month: DID NOT CHART.

Uk
Halo 4
1st Month: 2nd
2nd Month 4th

Halo Infinite
1st month: DID NOT CHART AT ALL

Best selling games of 2012:
Halo 4: 4th

Best selling games of 2021:
Halo Infinite : DID NOT CHART AT ALL

It did not chart on any rolling 12 month chart thereafter either. This even includes the fact that Halo 4 did not have a PC release whereas Infinite did. Halo 4 did well to outsell numerous multiplatform games even though it saw a decline in sales compared to Halo 3. Halo infinite on multiple platforms just sold poorly. It may have sold more than halo 4 on multiple platforms but its sales were not good compared to even low profile games and games with shitty reception like BF2042.

Why are people still using sales numbers for Xbox games? Absolutely Hallow headed to use that as a gauge of anything since gamepass.

So we're not allowed to use sales, charts, player counts, content or general opinion to judge the game, what *can* we use?
Oh lil buddy that's a big reply for someone who doesn't read.

Nowhere did I mention any of those things...only said "game sales"

Franchises like Street Fighter and Final Fantasy? What about new franchises like Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo? Many Xbox gamers were annoyed these 3rd party games were denied on Xbox. MS is doing what they have to ensure they get content on their platform. It's business.
