PS4 surpassed Wii U in Japan

That doesn't change the fact outside of Yo-Kai Watch and Monster Hunter (which wouldn't sell well on it), every major dedicated third party gaming IP is (or will shortly be) on the platform. Metal Gear Solid? Yes. Minecraft? Yes. Resident Evil? Yes. Tales? Yes. Final Fantasy? Yes. Dragon Quest? Yes. Grand Theft Auto? Yes. Overwatch? Yes. Yakuza? Yes. Call of Duty? Yes. Phantasy Star? Yes. God Eater? Yes. Toukiden? Yes. PES? Yes. Kingdom Hearts? Yes. Warriors? Yes. Gundam? Yes. Dragon Ball? Yes. One Piece? Yes. Sword Art Online? Yes.

Having every major IP on a format doesn't count for much when those IP aren't *exclusive* to it and the market doesn't revolve around that format. 3DS cannibalised Wii U sales because Nintendo had a habit of putting two similar (to the average consumer) games on both 3DS and Wii U with no easy way to communicate the differences. Why buy a Wii U when the same brand names are on the 3DS? That's why Splatoon was such a system seller - it defined the Wii U for many people.

3DS had every major IP lined up for it but it didn't guarantee a success in some regions, instead the hardware failed to meet Nintendo's own expectations for hardware sales year after year.

Predictable and expected I suppose. It's actually kinda suprising how Splatoon (and other factors, surely) helped the WiiU stay in front for so long.

Wonder just how much FFXV will impact the console. Is the hype strong for that game?

Completely wrong.

PS4 is already over 43m consoles shipped and it isn't even 3 years into it's lifespan. It'll hit 75m with ease and go well beyond that. 100m is in play.

3DS on the other hand is 5 years into it's life and roughly at 60m shipments. There's no way it's managing to ship another 15m at the end of it's lifespan with a successor right around the corner.

When all is said and done, PS4 should have a 30m+ lead over the 3DS.

Yep.

One of these is unlike the other.

I will keep this post and cherish it forever.

Let's be fair: MS tried VERY hard last gen to push the 360 in Japan and got fuck all back in return.

Why waste money for a third try in a contracting market?

Not true.
They tried some things for a certain time and saw some success.
They stopped "trying" after a few years and sales tanked completely.
But i agree on your last sentence, japan just isn't worth it anymore.

Days like these...

Have a Blessed Day
People are seriously trying to spin this as an accomplishment? I remember before it launched some delusional fans were claiming it would do as well as the PS3.

Some people were saying 'Japan is fucked' in regards to home consoles and others couldn't see it. They thought it was just Nintendo that was fucked. Lo and behold here we are.
People are still saying PS3 totals will be doable due to launch aligned sales not being too dissimilar yet. That could change soon as PS4 slim had a softer launch than PS3 slim did and will likely have a tough time keeping pace through the holidays. FFXV is almost guaranteed to underperform FFXIII in Japan too, preorders are tracking closer to FFXIII-2.

That gif would've looked a lot better if the camera didn't zoom out. The zoom lessens the effect of the bar breaking out of the image. Or alternatively, have it zoom for a little bit, then pause the zoom, keep the bar going, then break out. Either way, it shouldn't zoom and break out at the same time.

It depends how long PS4 will be available on the market. But "doable" or not, at least PS4 won't be considered as failure like Wii U.

Less of a failure but still a failure. Same for Vita really, which PS4 will also probably pass in time. The only system this gen that's doing at all well in Japan by any historical measure is 3DS and even that's clouded by the fact it declined significantly from it's predecessor.

Definitely not. Unless PS4 will be discontinued next year like Wii U, but I doubt it :)

I mean, it is exactly doing the same as the ps3 launch alligned
PS3 wasn't anything to write home about either though by the precedences set by Wii, PS2 and PS1. And as something akin to the latters are completely missing this gen even PS4 matching PS3 spells plenty bad for the Japanese home console market size.

PS3 up until that point was suffering from the clusterfuck launch and higher asking price. In a market that isn't contracting, a product with a better reputation and a lower price point should not be playing catch-up. IIRC the PS3 Slim/rebranding happened around this time.

Even if it just matches PS3, which is a longshot at best, that's still basically a failure for the region.

PS3 was also up against the incredibly popular Wii. PS4 with barely any competition can barely keep pace.

So PS3 is a failure now too? Ok :)

just FYI, best-selling home game consoles in Japan

1. PlayStation 2 – 21,454,325
2. PlayStation – 21.59 (including other Asian countries, so number for Japan only should be smaller)
3. NES – 19,350,000
4. SNES – 17.17 million
5. Wii – 12,750,000

Maybe it's a weird outlier but there's at least one system missing there.

Overall I'd say yes it is. It was a huge decline for the brand, nearly all major franchises saw similar declines, it lost most exclusive support and some major titles (Dragon Quest) it lost entirely. Not to mention PS3 in general was a massive loss generator.

It is more of a failure of the region.
The region is still incredibly healthy and punches well above it's weight revenue given it's population size. The issue is that it's largely moved on to mobile and to a lesser extent handhelds.

hold your horses, I just responded to a post that said "people said ps4 would do as ps3" saying that it is actually doing that.

It proably won't do the same LTD because it won't be sold for 10 years, but it will keep the pace alligned in time

Loss of franchises mostly because Japan stopped buying home consoles. IIRC Wii and PS3 never performed admirably in comparison to Nintendo's handheld units or PS2

Wii did amazing upfront but deflated fast since 3rd parties still generally ignored it. It was ahead of PS2 even the first couple years.

The Wii suffered from the fact that it had many big million sellers but lacked the healthy middle base for this parties which made the PS1 and 2 to such a great place for unique games from Japan.
