  • Konami & Take-Two are the only other pubs close to 1M sales on the system within the Top 30, with Take-Two having the better chance to get there thanks to GTA's longevity
  • Bandai Namco hasn't had a hit on the PS4 and narrowly misses out on this list with their top-selling game Tales of Berseria selling 220K units

Top 5 Publishers
  1. Bandai Namco - 2.003.566
  2. Microsoft - 1.518.168
  3. Square Enix - 1.135.304
  4. Konami - 672.143
  5. Sega - 504.481
  • The Switch has had a lack of high profile 3rd Party support
  • The best selling 3rd Party game is Minecraft, which will probably end up with over 2.5M physical sales on the system
  • Top selling 3rd Party publisher is Bandai, mainly due to its evergreen AA family games - Taiko and Fishing Spirits
  • Square Enix so far has provided lackluster support to the system outside of Dragon Quest IP
  • Konami is going to become the 4th publisher to surpass 1M sales on the system by the end of the year
  • Capcom's top-selling game on the system is a late port of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate

Fall expectations:
  • No 3rd Party game will surpass 200K sales on the PS4/PS5 unless we combine the SKUs
  • Switch's 3rd Party line-up this fall is stronger than the combined 3rd Party lineup of 2017/2018/2019, so for once 3rd Parties might actually capitalize on holidays
  • Konami's Momotaro & Koei's Age of Calamity will be the 5th & 6th games to surpass 500K on the Switch by the end of the year
  • Momotaro is the first Japanese 3rd Party game with the potential to sell over 1 million physical copies on the system(the question is can it do it before MHR launches)
  • Atelier 2(Koei), Derby Stallion(Game Addict), Family Trainer & Taiko(Bandai Namco), Fitness Boxing 2(Imagineer), SMT III(Atlus), Puyo Puyo 2(Sega) all have the potential to enter the Switch Top 30
  • Bravely Default 2 is still dated for 2020 and might be the one opportunity Square Enix has to capitalize on the fall
Prediction for Switch Top 30 by the end of the year:

Bandai Namco >2.5M
Microsoft >1.7M
Square >1.5M*
Konami >1.25M
Koei Tecmo & Sega >650K
TOTAL >10M
*if Bravely Default 2 launches before Week 50

I would never have expected Microsoft to be the second-biggest 3rd Party Switch contributor :messenger_dizzy:

Well its not like the Japanese 3rd Party have been throwing their weight behind the system, Monster Hunter Rise & Stories 2 basically guarantees Capcom takes 1st place by the end of 2021 by a considerable margin, despite doing jack-all for over three years on the system.
The biggest failure in terms of transitioning to the Switch remains Level-5, who basically went from selling millions on the 3DS to becoming irrelevant on the Switch. Gotta congratulate them on making everyone else's business decisions seem decent in comparison.

Are they not counting Atlus as Sega sales?

Atlus self-publish in Japan.

The less said about Level 5's strategy in the past decade the better, taking the audience for granted,, while trying to chase PS4 and mobile hits. It seems all titles they are currently working on are facing major issues, so they've been doing 70% off sales of their games on the eShop in the past year. Overall they are in a very terrible condition and I'm honestly worried for their future.

Even with the release of Monster Hunter Rise and Stories 2, Capcom will need at least three big titles on the Switch in the upcoming years not to see a big decline in sales in Japan going from the 3Ds to the Switch. They have apparently been trying to find a way to port Resident Evil to the system unsuccessfully, but maybe the rumored hardware revision might allow them to do so. Expecting that the expansion of the MHR will be one of their other major titles on the system.

Square should eventually see growth from the 3DS to the Switch with the release of Bravely Default 2 and Dragon Quest XII, still, it's disappointing to see the number of games they were able to release in the past, compared to their current output. I'm guessing that we will see a lot more Ports and Remakes from them in the upcoming years because outside of DQXII it doesn't seem many other of their major franchises are coming to the device any time soon Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts

GungHo
so far released Ninjala but since its a F2P we don't know what type of player base it has on the Switch and whether it's profitable for them.

+

Bandai
will see big growth from transitioning from the 3DS to the Switch. Although it's mostly down to the studios responsible for family games, a lot of their bigger efforts end up being ported late to the Switch, some still haven't been ported. Expecting fewer games to launch later on the Switch starting next year. Expecting them to end with over 5 million sales on the Switch in it's lifetime.

In terms of the companies which will see major growth by the end of the Switch lifecycle, it would be Microsoft. Minecraft alone probably has surpassed 3M if we combine physical and digital. Those types of sales would have made Microsoft a Top 5 Publisher on the 3DS. The game isn't losing popularity either, its very likely that the game will end up over 5 million physical + digital on the Switch in Japan.
Konami & Koei Tecmo are poised for growth as only Nioh, PES, and MGS being their major franchises unannounced on the Switch.

When looking at 3rd Party support in Japan we sometimes underestimate how much growth smaller pubs/studios are seeing. Marvelous & Nippon are both seeing good growth, Rune Factory 5 will have no issues becoming the top-selling Marvelous game in Japan all time until a new Harvest Moon launches. Nippon doesn't have many huge franchises so most of the growth won't ever be reflected in the physical top 30 charts. Their top-selling game of all time Disgaea: Hour of Darkness is barely above 150K sales on the PS2, so Disgaea 6 has a decent chance of outselling this next year. A lot of other smaller publishers have transitioned to the Switch in Japan with Falcom being the one that pretty much an outlier.

Another factor is Wester games, 3DS barely had any and its eShop didn't have many digital-only evergreen indies - the opposite is true for the Switch. 3DS basically had 1/100 of the indie/Western support Switch has gotten in Japan. No Breaks Games and their Publisher Teyon have a huge hit in Human Fall Flat, the game will probably do over 2 million lifetimes in Japan. The game was created by one Lithuanian and now his studio has over 20 employees and 5 million sales worldwide across all platforms. Small games are getting localized and featured in the local Nintendo directs and social media. Smaller companies are seeing most of the growth on the eShop. They have actually filled the void big Japanese publishers left during the first three years of the Switch. The 3DS ended up with over 24 million hardware sales which the Switch should surpass by the end of 2022, so there is no reason to believe that indies that end up being pushed by Nintendo in Japan are doing very well for the creators and Nintendo. With around 90% of the hardware market and 80% of the software market in Japan for Nintendo in upcoming years, they are n such a dominant position they haven't enjoyed since the 90s. No doubt the next Overcooked will target the Switch, to me it's surprising that the creators of Steam World Dig actually have an Xbox exclusive but I guess Microsoft offered very good conditions.
It will be interesting if indies prefer to stick with the Switch as the competition launches their new consoles, kinda expecting indies to remain on targeting the Switch, unless Sony, Google, Apple or Microsoft approaches them.

Update #1:
  • Bravely Default & Rune Factory 5 missed 2020

  • Atelier 2, Derby Stallion, Fitness Boxing 2, Rhythmic Adventure Pack are the most notable 3rd Party releases for the rest of the year
  • Doesn't seem that any 3rd Party PS5 or PS4 game will clear 200K this fall(COD:Cold War's combined sales might get there)

TOTAL: 7.826.227

Top Switch 3rd Parties:
  1. Bandai Namco - 1.940.996
  2. Microsoft - 1.568.365
  3. Square Enix - 1.135.304

  • Notably Konami cleared 1 million physical sales on the Switch after Momotaro's launch. It's already the 6th best selling 3rd Party game on the Switch and will finish 2020 in 2nd position behind Minecraft. It's also the biggest launch for them in the last decade beating out MGSV. Due to holidays eBaseball 2020 & Momotaro will bring Konami's total to over 1.6M units. Interestingly they've achieved this success with only 4 game launches on the system

  • Since Sakuna of Rice and Ruin launched a few weeks ago, we've seen movement from 3rd Parties on the Switch. Sakuna has been rocking the eShop top 3 since launching but unfortunately for Marvelous a substantial physical re-stock for the game will only arrive around mid-December. Still the game is already a big success and will likely be their first million selling title of 2020 across all platforms and regions. Marvelous also has very notable games launching next year with Pioneers of Olive Town and Rune Factory 5 which should set franchise records both in Japan and the World. It's very likely that Marvelous will clear 1 million physical sales on the Switch by mid-2021 which will allow it to surpass it's lifetime software sales on the 3DS.

  • Koei Tecmo also finally has a Top 30 game with Age of Calamity, next week the game will become their best selling game since the PS3 days and has a good chance to become their best selling game in the last decade. There is also Atelier 2 launching soon and provided they have printed enough copies for the launch, it should have no problem becoming the biggest launch for the franchise in Japan with over >100K sales. Overall Koei has a decent chance to clear half a million this year and have BOND and Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires lined up for 2021.

  • Bandai's Fishing Spirits and Taiko continue to sell a few thousand units per week, and with the launch of Rhythmic Adventure Pack & Family Trainer should have no problems becoming the first 3rd Party publisher to clear 2.5 million units on the Switch. Overall their strategy of late ports and making certain games PS4 exclusives have slowed their progress but the sheer number of titles they launch each year ensures they are in a very good position. So far the only game they have announced for the Switch for 2021 is Digimon Survive.

  • Square was unfortunate to miss Bravely Default 2's 2020 launch window, so they've not really had too much success this year. DQXIS will have no problems surpassing 600K by the end of the year and they've been announcing a lot of AA games for 2021 on the Switch, outside of Bravely 2 they also have Saga Frontier Remastered, Balan Wonderworld and NEO:TWEWY, potentially by mid-2021 they will be able to clear 2 million units on the Switch. They should also be in the process of announcing either DQXII, DQH3, DQB3 or a new DQ Monsters game for 2021, as their most recent DQ game was developed and launched some time ago.

  • The Top 3rd Party publisher by the end of March 2021 will become Capcom, Monster Hunter Rise's launch will be the biggest 3rd Party launch on the Switch, and the game will likely launch above 2 million. There is a very decent chance that by the end of 2021 it becomes their top selling game since Monster Hunter Freedom 3 on the PSP. They've also revealed Monster Hunter Stories 2 so their fortunes on the Switch will change considerably.

  • In terms of the rest of the publishers, releasing games this year we have Derby Stallion which could very well launch with over >100K, GameAddict's game has been rocking the Top 20 on Amazon for a while and Nintendo has been pushing it relentlessly on their YouTube channel. Imagineer is also set to make gains as Fitness Boxing 2 is looking like another game that will have no problem seeing gains compared to the debut. Sega's Puyo Puyo 2 is the final notable game for 2020, although I expect it to debut below Derby Stallion and Fitness Boxing 2.

  • Finally Human Fall Flat will be the first Western Indie game to clear 100K physical, the game released physically earlier in the year after spending years in the Top 15 of the eShop chart. It's price and popularity ensure it should have a very good holiday period, and double it's physical lifetime sales in the coming weeks. Currently the game stands at 51K physical sales and is probably the 2nd best selling 3rd Party game on the eShop behind Minecraft.

Overall since Sakuna's launch we are entering a period of time where 3rd Party support on the Switch has finally arrived, I won't be surprised if the first half of 2021 is up considerably in terms of Software sales YoY despite New Horizon breaking records last year.
By the end of March 2021 Switch will have as many 3rd Party million sellers as the PS4 achieved during it's lifetime, while the Top 30 games will surpass the lifetime sales of the PS4 Top 30.

With digital the ps4 will likely finish with 7 million sellers. Pretty impressive after the ps3.

Very nice summary! We've been saying third parties will transition to Switch for some time and it looks like it's finally happening.

I'm not 100 per cent sure but I believe Bond will be published by Nintendo in Japan so it won't count as a third party release.

I had no idea about BOND is something Nintendo was paying for but you seem correct as it also appears to be part of their voucher program.

I had no idea about BOND is something Nintendo was paying for but you seem correct as it also appears to be part of their voucher program.
Nintendo and KT seem to have a very strong relationship right now. I just hope the game gets localised as I like Nintendo supporting new IP.

  • Momotaro will end up around 1 million sold for 2020
  • Minecraft will be flat YoY >600K
  • Age of Calamity will become Koei's Top Selling Game on the Switch with >350K
  • eBaseball will probably be the only other game with over 300K sales
  • Mario & Sonic and Fishing Spirits are the only other titles likely to finish with over 200K sales
  • DQXI S, Taiko no Tatsujin & One Piece: Warriors 4 are the games likely to finish with around 150K sales
  • Fortnite, Sakuna, DerbyStallion, Fitness Boxing, Human: Fall Flat & Hatsune Miku are likely to finish with over 100K sales
Overall the final result for the year for third parties will be around 4 million mark within the Top 20, which will be a 18% increase YoY.

The biggest winner this year will be Konami who will end up with around 1.3 million physical software sold on the system. Momotaro is likely to end up above 2 million shipped + digital by the end of 2021, making it their best selling game in Japan of all time.

Bandai Namco will see the biggest YoY decline, as their output this year on the Switch has been lacking a new family evergreen after the success they found with Fishing Spirits and Taiko.

Square's output on the Switch this year was anemic and the results show it.

Next year Monster Hunter Rise alone will outsell the 2020 Top 20 3rd Party Games,
While the following games have potential to sell above 300K in 2021:
Minecraft, Momotaro, Sakuna, Olive Town, Rune Factory 5, Bravely Default 2, SMT V, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Human: Fall Flat,

Surprised at how poorly DQ11S has sold in what is almost certainly its strongest market. Maybe people aren't willing to pay full price for what amounts to DLC anymore

PS4 carrying 3rd party sales both in Japan and worldwide. If you add digital to the calculation, Sony consoles are a goldmine for 3rd party.

Which version of DQ11S are you referring to? The original Switch release did really well but the one that came out last week didn't.

Then again that's not too surprising when it's a late port of a late port.

Switch version only sold 545k, compared to 1.4 million for the base version on PS4.

I thought that was pretty good. Not many games sell over 500,000 units in Japan these days and this was an enhanced version that came out more than 2 years the original. It was never going to get close to the PS4 version.

Actually in Japan Switch probably has more digital sales for third parties, in any-case neither device has more than 30% digital. Even the best selling game on the PS4 - Monster Hunter World had only slightly above 30%, while games like FF/DQXI are JRPG, so they don't have high digital sales. 2nd hand market is still very relevant there and JRPGs rarely have evergreen status.

Switch version only sold 545k, compared to 1.4 million for the base version on PS4.

The game launched on 3DS a few years earlier, DQXII will do much better on the Switch when it eventually launches.

1) DQXI 3DS - 1772K
2) DQXI PS4 - 1368K
3) DQXI S Switch - 558K
4) DQXI S PS4 - 28K

Since making this thread in October, Switch 3rd Parties have gained around 2 million of sales mainly thanks to Momotaro with the launch of Monster Hunter Rise, Olive Town & Bravely Default 2, Switch's Top 30 list should catch-up to the PS4 by April 2021 and I think surpass 20 million sales by the end of the year due to continued sales of Monster Hunter Rise, Momotaro & Minecraft as well as new launches like Rune Factory 5, Stories 2 & SMTV.
Human Fall Flat
is the first Western Indie to reach 100K and should do so next week, the game had sold 600K digitally across all platforms in Japan as of April 2020.

Top Publishers:
  1. Konami - 2.118.003
  2. Bandai Namco - 2.019.999
  3. Microsoft - 1.740.451
  4. Square Enix - 1.177.367
  5. Level 5 - 468.311
  6. Sega - 370.235
  7. Koei Tecmo - 319.806
  8. Capcom - 309.596
  9. Marvelous - 247.026
  10. Ubisoft - 213.453
Konami has had a hell of an year leading to them becoming the Top 3rd Party publisher on the Switch when looking at the Top 30, overall the Top Publisher remains Bandai Namco - since they have a lot more titles launch on the Switch but they also pretty much failed to launch anything noteworthy this year on the platform.
Marvelous also had an unexpected hit with Sakuna, but they are still having difficulties supplying more than 15K copies per week - it will be interesting how the game performs next year could very well continue to climb up the rankings.

Potentially the last update for the PS4 Top 30, as I'm not sure if Resident Evil: Village will manage more than 227K sales on the system, currently pre-orders aren't exactly setting the World on fire, so the game needs great WoM to outperform expectations in the current climate of the PS4 being phased out. The other major PS4 releases are Nier & the Demon Slayer game, even if a certain game manages to make the Top 30, its unlikely to make a huge impact to the end result, as it will just knock out Bethesda's only game out of the rankings and is unlikely to surpass 500K

  29. Red Dead Redemption II (Take Two) - 227.842
  30. Fallout 4 (Bethesda) - 227.749
TOTAL: 15.346.571

Top 10 Publishers:
  1. Square Enix - 5.880.899
  2. Capcom - 4.197.072
  3. Konami - 963.631
  4. Take Two - 957.016

  7. Atlus - 649.505
  8. Ubisoft - 348.882
  9. EA - 275.924
  10. D3 Publisher - 244.159
Square & Capcom made up around 2/3 of the sales in the Top 30, while the absence of Bandai Namco is emblematic of their incapability to find success on the PlayStation ecosystem on their home turf. Konami has transitioned into AA development and are also contracting out their IPs to other studios, I anticipate that if they launch any exclusives on the PS4/PS5 in the future there would be a nice check for them from Sony. Sega, From Software and D3 Publisher will have a difficult time in Japan with their future games, D3 are seemingly transitioning to a multiplat Switch strategy but in Sega and From Software that transition doesn't seem likely.

The AAA Western pubs will be the hardest hit, Activision Blizzard had Sony publish COD in Japan and Black Ops - Cold War is just experiencing the worst result since 2014 for the Franchise:
  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018) - 511.722
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops III (2015) - 403.054
  3. Call of Duty: WWII (2017) - 387.498
  4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) - 255.782
  5. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (2016) - 215.127
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War (2020) - 167.418
  7. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (2014) - 102.668
The decline of PlayStation in Japan and the knock on effect that's having on the rest of Asia, will make it difficult for EA, Take Two & Ubisoft.
It will be interesting if Konami uses this opportunity to launch a fully fleshed out Pro Evolution Soccer on the Switch, while EA continues with the Legacy editions.

Since January Third parties have gained 3.28 million sales on the Switch, with Capcom leading the way with over half of these sales.
This Quarter will be all about Rise, Rune Factory 5 and how well Momotaro continues to hold. With no other major third party games launching, Trials of Mana is the game that should be knocked off the Top 30 when Rune Factory 5 launches, meaning that Marvelous will close the gap on Square Enix

The gap between the lifetime sales of the PS4 Top 30 is below 3 million, so by late July I anticipate that third parties on the Switch will have surpassed 16 million. And Q3 is when thing are set to accelerate with Baseball Spirits, SMT V, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Shin Kun, Samurai Warriors 5 joining the fray.

Overall since I made this comparison in October the Top 30 on the Switch has gained 5.14 million, and as PlayStation ecosystem fades in Japan it's likely that we will see further consolidation of third party efforts on the Nintendo Switch.
The biggest decline will be felt by Western Third Parties, as their AAA games will become a real niche in Japan - when COD is struggling to surpass 200K you know you have a problem on your hands.
