Sony has made it possible to sign up for beta testing future OS updates.
”Since the launch of PS5, our teams have been working to continuously enhance your experience on the console. Later this year, we’re rolling out another major system update packed with new features, and we want your help testing them out!

Starting today, you can register for an opportunity to join the first-ever PS5 system software beta program at: https://www.playstation.com/ps5/ps5-beta-program-sign-up. Registration is open to players over the age of 18 in the U.S., Canada, Japan, U.K., Germany and France. By signing up, you could be among the first to put new features to the test and provide essential feedback that will help guide their development.

If you’re selected to be part of the program, you’ll receive an email with instructions on how to download the beta version of the next system software. In order to sign up, you’ll need a PS5 console with an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account. You will also be added to the potential participant pool for future PS5 system software betas automatically without having to register again. After the beta begins, you can restore your system software to the latest official release version before the beta program ends.

Our last major PS5 system update in April introduced new features like USB extended storage, cross-generation Share Play, an improved Game Base and other UI enhancements and social features. We’ll share more in the coming weeks about what you can expect in the beta for our next update.

Whether you’re a new or returning PlayStation beta tester, we thank you for your support. Your feedback helps us make the console experience better for our whole community.”

IDK about that xD I’m starting to doubt we will ever see it

But maybe storage expansion will be one of the things tested

Nothing particularily wrong with OS stability IMO. My PS4 was way worse at launch, the only issues I’ve experienced were related more to the game rather than the OS itself.
It’s a years long joke with Nintendo and Sony releasing huge updates that do nothing but “improve stability” which is just them saying “we’re patching this so you can’t hack your console”

Signed up. Hopefully they don't cherry pick users and actually open up to more players.

Signed up and while I was at it, complained about the PS5 not having an activity feed in the comment section of the blog in hopes that someone important at Playstation read it :messenger_tears_of_joy: .

I signed up in hopes that I get picked and in hopes that they revert the damn Party System to what it used to be. I hated it when they put it in place and continue to hate it. I keep hoping the next update is the leap home. I also hope the be amongst the first to test an NVME slot update *cough* *cough*

I used to be part of the Xbox insider program, and thought it was cool to be getting the updates first and playing around with them. But then my available time to game has shortened, and I would rather just play a game than play with and checkout new OS features.

I think these programs are great and really help push the development of new features. I am glad to hear Sony is going to offer it with PS5, which hopefully that means their OS won't be as stagnant as it was on PS4 (especially when compared to Xbox). However, they just are not for me anymore (probably just due to me getting old :D :D :D ).

Great news though!

Why another beta test, if you already bought a ps5 you are already a beta tester.
Historically Sony has done this with updates that added or changed major functionality of the console. I’m 99.99% sure this is the big update we’ve been waiting for, especially with VRR being a shitstorm for manufacturers who built expensive TVs that were ready for the capability but wasn’t implemented properly (Looking at you, LG!)

If I sign up, will they allow me to buy a PS5 from them already?

Imagine they send you a usb drive with the update on it, along with a cardboard PS5 and they write "Hopefully this will keep you entertained until you get your own PS5!" like they are doing you a favour, really rubbing lye into the wound.

Wouldn’t open the page for me, then I used UK VPN and went smoothly. But now I’m having second thoughts due to possible bricking and clause that says Sony will not be responsible and warranty won’t cover it. Better not take unnecessary risks.

I signed up for it, if they ask for feedback for future updates I'm going to spam "Add 8-bit + dithering as an option for HDMI 2.0 users so they can get 4K@60+HDR@444/RGB AND FOLDERS YOU BASTARDS" until they add both of those things. I'm such a helpful feedbacker.

It would be so great if they let us fully control the resolution, bit-depth and refresh rate output like on XSX, but with the option of 8-bit+dithering I mentioned above, which isn't on Xbox.

Actually, maybe an Xboxer in the know can chime in here but are you able to enable HDR and keep it outputting 8-bit colour depth? Or does it force 10-bit? I'm guessing it would have heavy banding vs. 10-bit probably so wouldn't be great if you could do it but I would like to know if it even allows it, to be able to maintain 4K@60+HDR@444/RGB through an HDMI 2.0 connection.

Although I admit I haven't checked if thats this would get tripped up by some sort of spec limitation for HDMI, rather than be anything to do with Xbox itself, I'd still like to know though since if it didnt have big IQ caveats I'd prefer to have 8-bit@444/RGB over 10-bit@422 to get that greater dynamic range for the HDR, Vincent Teoh showed it was actually a massive difference and I'd be leaving a lot of my TVs "brightness performance" on the table when its outputting HDR@422 vs 444/RGB.

They just rarely use the extra range of extra colours in anything HDR so far really so I don't care about losing that, just as long as there aren't banding artifacts, or other issues.
