Microsoft are taking an interesting approach as they launch the Xbox Scarlett with Halo Infinite, a game that will also be releasing for Xbox One (and for PC, of course). So, could Sony be doing something similar for their own first party PS5 launch titles as well? Ghost of Tsushima serves as a perfect example, which many feel might end up as a cross-gen game due to its reported delay.

According to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, that won’t be the case. Speaking recently on the Kotaku Splitscreen podcast, Schreier said that based on what he knows, the games Sony will be launching the PS5 with won’t be cross-gen, and will instead be exclusive to their ew console. One would assume one of these games is the upcoming Bluepoint title, though we can’t say for sure until Sony makes an official announcement, of course.

We don't know yet how retro with ps4 is going to be. So if there is emulation and enhancements, Ghost of Tsushima (and all ps4 exclusives) will be cross gen. As for ps5 exclusives, pretty sure they will be PS5 exclusives, that's how you get people to buy new hardware... aside the leap in hardware of course.

Didn't Microsoft say that all games released on Scarlett will work on the X?

It will be interesting to see how the two different strategies develop; Sony with a traditional, tried and tested approach, and Microsoft aiming for a more tiered, PC approach.

This could already be inferred from Sony's actions this year; they stopped announcing new game titles entirely. We know they ARE making new games, but if the games are PS5 exclusives then there is no point announcing them yet.

On the other hand, if they were to make cross gen games, they would definitely have announced them by now. They were keeping themselves artificially quiet because the PS5 launch has to come first. And they even go so far as to warn us in advance that the State of Play presentations coming up, would have nothing on PS5 titles.

Was this not the case anyway with the PS4, Killzone, Knack and Resogun were all day 1 and were not on PS3.

And speaking of PS3 I am probably forgetting more but Resistance was never on PS2, this would just be Sony doing what they have always done, it’s not even a new strategy for them.

It had been a trend that whenever Xbox did something strategically dubious, the gaming media immediately jump on the "when is Sony going to copy Microsoft's brilliant plan!" angle.

Yeah, well....We've heard of PS5 games in development since 2016......

Shadowfall, ISS were all launch window games and they showed what PS4 could do...…..I imagine these PS5 launch games should be bonkers with the new tech on hand and all the time they've been at it.......Shadowfall didn't have much time in development mind you.....

Bluepoint's game, I think RAD is working on something and the rumors about PlayStation AllStars returning are all good picks for launch......A new GT at launch would be legendary though...…..I think Sony also needs to invest in a new slasher, a new wipeout and warhawk might be on the cards for launch as well....

Now we have Just to wait a year
What is there to wait? Sony had BC for two of the three past machines, and they had 1sy party next gen exclusives since PS2. And they were rewarded with three of its consoles being in the top 4 best selling home gaming machines.

What is this strange insistence that Sony had to copy Microsoft came from? Are you the kind of of person who thinks PS4 was going to be Always-online, because Xbox One was doing it?

I mean was there any doubt? This is what Sony always does.
This. How is this news?

Knack, Killzone Shadow Fall, Resogun didn't come out on PS3.

The only first party launch titles that come to mind that was crossgen were the two Zelda games (Twilight Princess & Breath of the Wild). But this is far from being a standard in the industry.

And the messaging has said as much since the release of the Pro (quoting from a DF interview with Cerny):

What becomes clear is that Sony itself - perhaps unlike its rival - does not believe that the concept of the console hardware generation is over. Cerny has a number of criteria he believes amounts to a reset in gaming power: primarily, a new CPU architecture and vastly increased memory allocation.
PS5 is next gen. New games. Pro (which was essentially a PS4+, nothing wrong with that though) wasn't next gen.

Now that Microsoft is doing something different, and since Microsoft is rich, that means they must be geniuses and are planing something that would make them billions. And that means Sony must copy them immediately.

Except, of course, that nothing in the previous sentence matched reality. Sony did copy one thing from Microsoft, which was paid online. But that's where the copying ends. At no other time did Microsoft ever did anything that Sony see fit to imitate. Certainly not Game Streaming, which they did first, and certainly not this silly "no more next gen exclusives" suicide plan.

Resogun later got PS3 and Vita ports.
Housemarque isn't first-party though.

(something Sony should rectify, that's like such an obvious get, the price would probably be cheap too as Nex Machina apparently didn't sell that well, for reasons I'll never be able to understand)

It's going to be the same as it is on PC. Ghost of Tsushima and Last of Us 2 might receive a patch unlocking some stuff (higher res/framerate) on PS5 and there you have your "cross gen" title. I bet $5 on Spider-Man also receiving a patch to run much better on PS5.

I was reading in one of the next gen threads last week, a poster indicated that Sony would have no games at launch...…..I'm thinking that this insider must be mistaken......Surely he should check with this poster....
