PS5 Pro at $700: ‘Lack of Competition’ Made It an ‘Easier Decision’ for Sony to Run With Higher Price

Then why bother to make it at all? They don't have any competition. There is no reason to create a Pro console for very little to no profit. My guess this is probably the most profitable console per unit than Sony has ever made.
On the other side, you can look at it as a successful industry leader putting out new technology and specs, pushing things a little more forward, giving gamers another option (while they can collect live user data for their AI machine learning/training) instead of another mundane way to get you to sub to a service.

Eh, pushing things a little further while pushing other things much further behind, paywalling features that came with the base model on a "premium" product.

Sure, you can have your value complaints, you're entitled to them for an optional product. But that wasn't the point of my comment.

I get it. I'm worried about the impact this console will have in convincing Sony that they can push their pricing higher while pushing their value lower and people will still go for it, especially in regard to PS6.

The number of people thinking XBox deserved to be supported regardless of their trash output for the last decade is too damned high. Nobody was obligated to buy the damned box, and they sure as hell gave most of us a reason not to. I bought a Series S and a couple years of game pass cheap whenever it was like 180 or so on one of the last couple Black Fridays and barely touched it then traded it in for like $60 more than I paid for it (thanks GameStop!).

But all I’m reading is “Won’t someone think of the multi trillion dollar corporation!!!???”. If anyone is to blame for the lack of competition it’s XBox. You all should have been bitching at Microsoft for putting out fuck all and destroying their own business with the “great value” of gaming instead of bitching at the Sony fans for not buying the box.
Preach the Gospel. The Xbox platform is failing because of their decisions.

I made this exact point the moment it was announced.

It is what it is. Sony will edge closer to a broader monopoly in certain markets and the prices will react accordingly, although they will be subject to more scrutiny.

I’m not so worried about hardware costs. I’m more concerned about pricing for games and the lack of imagination and effort that will be put into those games.

Putting this out may also mean that if X isn’t out of the console business then their next one just needs to be that much more impressive to be considered next gen by the masses. If their next gen is barely stronger than the high end of Sonys current gen then that’s a win for Sony and Sony will have the ability to drop the price when the next X arrives and run the clock out till PS6.

I’m sure there’s a lot of shit that goes on behind the scenes as far as corporate espionage and shit so these guys know more about each others plans than we think.

What a win for Phil.
Thanks to you, PS users are expected to pay way over the odds for junk to get a shaper image :messenger_winking_tongue:

Thats because they included a BR drive which was new and standalone BR players were $800-1000. If they included a DVD player, it'd cheaper similar to Xbox. PS3 fat launch system also played PS1, PS2, PS3 games native.

After a few years of BR efficiencies, PS3 systems were half the price.

PS5 Pro does not have a a new to market optical drive. In fact it doesn't even have a disc drive at all like PS5 OG.
Ok, and this one has a 2TB SSD compared to a 60 GB platter drive?

Don't act like you're getting worse tech, you're getting different tech. Frankly I'd rather have the 2 TB SSD vs a disc drive, all games have to be installed and take up huge space now anyway.

Leave the disc as an optional add-on which they did, and it's reasonable at $80.

That said, it's 1000% ridiculous they don't include the vertical stand.

If you taken into consideration with inflation, you can't complain about a console costing $700 in 2024.

The PS3 costed $599 in 2006 which is $935.33 in 2024 adjusted by inflation.
The Xbox 360 costed $399 in 2005 which is $643.13 in 2024 adjusted by inflation.

Really feels like playing in the NBA. You're 20 points ahead. Instead of driving in the paint to get the 2 pointer, you shoot a 3 pointer just to get ahead.

Whether it's a swish or not is something else. We'll see.

The inflation conversation is always interesting in terms of seeing how an old product would now cost in today's world.

The reality is however is that we are paying based on what's happening in the present moment. We are not paying inflated prices currently. So I never think about how much the PS3 costs in today's market. It never changes my decision and it won't change here for the Pro.

I would rather have a better PS+ service.

When games cost 90$ (without DLC) I will fondly remember the era when it was possible to get hundreds of games for $11 a month :goog_beaming_face:
